Sensory reinforcement of eyeblink rate in a decorticate human.

An unusual case of hydranencephaly was reported. The child survived for 19 years and showed evidence on three occasions of an increase in eyeblink rate with tactile reinforcement. Diagnosis was confirmed by an autopsy which revealed no preserved cortex in either hemisphere.

Application of synchronous music reinforcement to increase walking speed: A novel approach for training intensity.

Walking is a common and preferred form of exercise. Although there are current recommendations for walking volume (e.g., steps per day), recent research has begun to distinguish volume from intensity (e.g., "brisk" walking) as an important dimension of exercise. Increasing intensity may confer health advantages beyond volume measures because it shifts cardiovascular performance to more vigorous training zones. Reinforcement-based approaches have been valuable in increasing volume measures of exercise, and the present study sought to develop a corresponding reinforcement approach to training wa

Changes in the elimination and resurgence of alcohol-maintained behavior in rats and the effects of naltrexone.

Resurgence may be a mechanism of relapse in alcohol use disorder patients upon discharge from treatment as part of an abuse-treatment-relapse cycle. Adjunctive pharmacotherapies may be a means to facilitate behavioral treatments and block resurgence. Experiments were conducted using a model of alcohol self-administration to assess the repeatability of the elimination and resurgence of alcohol-maintained behavior and the effects of naltrexone. Experiments had three phases. In Phase 1, behavior was maintained by oral alcohol under a fixed-ratio schedule. In Phase 2, behavior was extinguished via

Extinction theory & anorexia nervosa: Deepening therapeutic mechanisms.

By virtue of adopting the core symptomatic fear (i.e., a fear of weight gain) as a primary treatment target, the treatment of AN centrally involves exposure-driven processes. However, exposure trials targeting the fear of weight gain in AN have been sparse, yielding mixed results to date. In translating extinction theory to the treatment of AN, it is likely that the absence of a clear distinction between what constitutes the core feared cue and the core feared outcome has stymied the application of exposure treatments in AN. This review considers several configurations of the core fear associa

Stress and Memory: A Selective Review on Recent Developments in the Understanding of Stress Hormone Effects on Memory and Their Clinical Relevance.

Stress causes a neuroendocrine response cascade, leading to the release of catecholamines and glucocorticoids (GCs). GCs influence learning and memory by acting on mineralocorticoid (MR) and glucocorticoid (GR) receptors. Typically, GCs enhance the consolidation of memory processing at the same time as impairing the retrieval of memory of emotionally arousing experiences. The present selective review addresses four recent developments in this area. First, the role of the endocannabinoid system in mediating the rapid, nongenomic effects of GCs on memory is illustrated in rodents. Subsequently,

Reexposure to the amnestic agent alleviates cycloheximide-induced retrograde amnesia for reactivated and extinction memories.

We investigated whether reexposure to an amnestic agent would reverse amnesia for extinction of learned fear similar to that of a reactivated memory. When cycloheximide (CHX) was administered immediately after a brief cue-induced memory reactivation (15 sec) and an extended extinction session (12 min) rats showed retrograde amnesia for both memories. CHX did not produce amnesia for a moderate extinction session (6 min). Re-administering CHX before testing reversed the amnestic effect for both memories (i.e., the memories were recovered). These results are discussed using a modified state depen

Say-do-report training to change chronic behaviors in mentally retarded subjects.

Two mentally retarded subjects with language deficits participated. A say-do-report correspondence training was implemented to break the functions of present conditions given by a long history of contingencies maintaining chronic inadequate patterns of behavior. The say-do-report procedure was implemented following a multiple baseline design across two behaviors in one subject and in an AB design for the other. During baseline, all possible social contingencies maintaining the inadequate behaviors were eliminated. Promising or saying what a subject would do was then implemented and followed by

Use of component analyses to identify active variables in treatment packages for children with feeding disorders.

We evaluated the separate components in treatment packages for food refusal of 4 young children. First, treatment packages were implemented until food acceptance improved. Next, a component analysis was conducted within a multielement or reversal design to identify the active components that facilitated food acceptance. The results indicated that escape extinction was always identified as an active variable when assessed; however, other variables, including positive reinforcement and noncontingent play, were also identified as active variables for 2 of the children. The results suggest that th

A variant of guided exposure to mourning for use with treatment resistant patients.

We report a variant of "guided exposure to mourning," designed for use with patients who have proved resistant to other treatments for unresolved, morbid grief. The work provides some indication as to when such behavioral techniques for resolution of morbid grief are likely to prove successful, and when not.

Enhancing Psychological Interventions for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Treatment with Memory Influencing Drugs.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a chronic psychiatric disease resulting from the experience or witnessing of traumatic events. Persistent PTSD symptoms impair patients' daily quality of life, jeopardizing sleep, mood, sociability, and arousal. Recommended psychological or pharmacological interventions are effective only in a small portion of patients and often lead to relapse. Thus, there is a critical need to address a lack of advancement in the treatment of PTSD. The combination of psychological interventions, aimed at facilitating the extinction of the traumatic memory, and pharmac

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: The Relationship Between the Fear Response and Chronic Stress.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a disabling psychiatric condition that can develop following a physical, psychological, or sexual trauma. Despite the growing body of literature examining the psychological and biological factors involved in PTSD psychopathology, specific biomarkers that may improve diagnosis and treatment of PTSD have yet to be identified and validated. This challenge may be attributed to the diverse array of symptoms that individuals with the disorder manifest. Examining the interrelated stress and fear systems allows for a more comprehensive study of these symptoms,

Waiting for translation: A review of translational research in psychological treatment.

Translational psychological treatment aims to translate basic research findings and principles into novel psychological interventions, but recent research indicates unrealized potential. To better understand and overcome barriers in this translational process, we systematically reviewed 647 publications from a recently published bibliographic dataset. We took a mixed-methods approach, drawing on a previously proposed conceptual framework for translational research in clinical psychology. Specifically, we identified the exact translational stage of each publication and specified the object of t

Direction of changes in the cardiac component in a Pavlovian conditioning paradigm with variations in CS- and UCS-contents.

The research reported was aimed at examining the direction of heart rate post-stimulus changes in a conditioning paradigm with fear-relevant (snakes and spiders), and fear-irrelevant (circles and triangles) slide-CSs. Furthermore, half of the subjects in each group had electric shocks as the UCS, whereas the other two halves were merely threatened about the shock. Finally, all subjects were informed at the start of the extinction about the removal of the UCS. Thus, a 2 X 2 factorial design was used. The conditioning situation involved a differential paradigm with an interstimulus interval of 8

A clinical evaluation and validation of a competing stimulus assessment targeting excessive functional communication responses.

Functional communication training (FCT) is a commonly used treatment for socially maintained challenging behavior. Although highly efficacious, increases in challenging behavior are often observed during schedule thinning within FCT. Prior research has demonstrated that providing competing stimuli in the extinction component of a multiple schedule reduced socially mediated challenging behavior during schedule thinning. Another difficulty practitioners may face is an increase in incorrect functional communication responses (FCRs) during extinction. In the current study, we sought to extend rese

How Fear Memory is Updated: From Reconsolidation to Extinction?

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric disorder caused by traumatic past experiences, rooted in the neurocircuits of fear memory formation. Memory processes include encoding, storing, and recalling to forgetting, suggesting the potential to erase fear memories through timely interventions. Conventional strategies such as medications or electroconvulsive therapy often fail to provide permanent relief and come with significant side-effects. This review explores how fear memory may be erased, particularly focusing on the mnemonic phases of reconsolidation and extinction. Reconsoli

The cerebellum regulates fear extinction through thalamo-prefrontal cortex interactions in male mice.

Fear extinction is a form of inhibitory learning that suppresses the expression of aversive memories and plays a key role in the recovery of anxiety and trauma-related disorders. Here, using male mice, we identify a cerebello-thalamo-cortical pathway regulating fear extinction. The cerebellar fastigial nucleus (FN) projects to the lateral subregion of the mediodorsal thalamic nucleus (MD), which is reciprocally connected with the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC). The inhibition of FN inputs to MD in male mice impairs fear extinction in animals with high fear responses and increases the bu

2MDR, a Microcomputer-Controlled Visual Stimulation Device for Psychotherapy-Like Treatments of Mice.

Post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental disorders can be treated by an established psychotherapy called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). In EMDR, patients are confronted with traumatic memories while they are stimulated with alternating bilateral stimuli (ABS). How ABS affects the brain and whether ABS could be adapted to different patients or mental disorders is unknown. Interestingly, ABS reduced conditioned fear in mice. Yet, an approach to systematically test complex visual stimuli and compare respective differences in emotional processing based on semiautomate

Know thy SEFL: Fear sensitization and its relevance to stressor-related disorders.

Extreme stress can cause long-lasting changes in affective behavior manifesting in conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Understanding the biological mechanisms that govern trauma-induced behavioral dysregulation requires reliable and rigorous pre-clinical models that recapitulate multiple facets of this complex disease. For decades, Pavlovian fear conditioning has been a dominant paradigm for studying the effects of trauma through an associative learning framework. However, severe stress also causes long-lasting nonassociative fear sensitization, which is often overlooked
