In Patients with Severe Peripheral Arterial Disease, Revascularization-Induced Improvement in Lower Extremity Ischemia Can Be Detected by Laser Speckle Contrast Imaging of the Fluctuation in Blood Perfusion after Local Heating.

BACKGROUND: We previously reported the utility of the perfusion value (PV) fluctuation slope for detecting severe ischemia in the lower limb. Our approach was based on a thermal load test mimicking the well-known physiological reaction termed "cold-induced vasodilation," which is known to occur as a 3-phase phenomenon. The slope parameter quantifies the decrease in PVs accompanying the relative cooling (third phase) following the transient increase in blood flow (second phase) induced by the applied thermal load. This phenomenon of "relative" cold-induced vasodilation (rCIVD) can be monitored

The health impacts of heat waves in five regions of New South Wales, Australia: a case-only analysis.

OBJECTIVES: To determine and characterise the health impacts of extreme heat events on the population in five regions of New South Wales (NSW). Such data provide evidence necessary for the development of policy and programme initiatives designed to reduce the burden of disease due to the impact of climate change. METHODS: A case-only approach was used to analyse 1,497,655 emergency hospital admissions in Sydney East and West, Illawarra, Gosford-Wyong and Newcastle. The distribution of daily minimum and maximum temperatures in each region was used to define extreme heat (≥99th percentile). We

Ambient temperature and preterm birth: A retrospective study of 32 million US singleton births.

BACKGROUND: Days of extreme temperature may be associated with transiently higher risk of preterm birth, but prior studies have been limited and results have been heterogeneous. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the association between days of extreme heat and cold and risk of preterm birth among ~32 million live singleton births between 1989 and 2002 across 403 counties in the contiguous United States (US). METHODS: We used a distributed lag nonlinear model to estimate the association between population-weighted daily mean temperature and risk of preterm birth in each county and then pooled results a

Minimization of heatwave morbidity and mortality.

Global climate change is projected to increase the frequency and duration of periods of extremely high temperatures. Both the general populace and public health authorities often underestimate the impact of high temperatures on human health. To highlight the vulnerable populations and illustrate approaches to minimization of health impacts of extreme heat, the authors reviewed the studies of heat-related morbidity and mortality for high-risk populations in the U.S. and Europe from 1958 to 2012. Heat exposure not only can cause heat exhaustion and heat stroke but also can exacerbate a wide rang

Atmospheric stability sets maximum moist heat and convection in the midlatitudes.

Extreme near-surface moist heat and severe convective storms are among the leading causes of weather-related damages worldwide. Here, we show that episodes of extreme moist heat and severe convection frequently co-occur across midlatitude land regions and develop a theoretical framework that links their maximum intensities to preexisting low-level energy inversions in the atmosphere. By accounting for the stored-energy nature of midlatitude severe convection, where near-surface moist heat and atmospheric instability accumulate before convection initiates, our work advances the understanding of

Exceeding the limits of paediatric heat stress tolerance: the risk of losing a generation to climate inaction.

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are creating unprecedented climate-driven extreme weather, with levels of heat and humidity surpassing human physiological tolerance for heat stress. These conditions create a risk of mass casualties, with some populations particularly vulnerable due to physiological, behavioural and socioeconomic conditions (eg, lack of adequate shelter, limited healthcare infrastructure, sparse air conditioning access and electrical grid vulnerabilities). Children, especially young children, are uniquely vulnerable to extreme heat-related morbidity and mortality due to factors

Expert Review: Confronting Climate-Driven Heat Risks to Maternal and Fetal Health.

IMPORTANCE: In the current era of climate change, extreme heat exposure poses escalating threats to maternal-fetal health. Despite the expansive scale of extreme heat exposure worldwide, dramatized by the record-breaking global ocean and atmospheric temperatures throughout 2023 and into 2024, the extent of the threat posed by heat is underestimated and underappreciated. Unlike the physical destruction wrought by climate-driven events like hurricanes and wildfires, heat exposure does not cause severe damage to the built environment. Yet, in most years, heat has been the deadliest hazard in the

Inequitable distribution of risks associated with occupational heat exposure driven by trade.

The exposure to extreme heat at workplaces poses substantial threat to human effort and manual labour. This becomes more prominent due to the global dispersion of labour-intensive production activities via trade. We combine a climate model with an input-output model to quantify the risks associated with trade-related occupational extreme heat exposure. Here we show an 89% surge in trade-related labour exposure to extreme heat, escalating from 221.5 to 419.0 billion person-hours between 1995 and 2020. Lower-middle-income and low-income economies constituted 53.7% and 18.3% of global exposure bu

Developing a Novel Heat Vulnerability Index for Maricopa County, Arizona.

Extreme heat events increasingly threaten public health, particularly in rapidly urbanizing areas like Maricopa County, Arizona. This study addresses gaps in identifying communities most vulnerable to extreme heat and heat waves by creating a Heat Vulnerability Index (HVI) that integrates often-overlooked populations. Utilizing US census data, satellite imagery, chronic illness prevalence rates, and unhoused population data, this HVI assesses vulnerability across census tracts in Maricopa County's diverse urban-rural landscape. Principal components analysis identified nine factors influencing

Ensemble Bayesian modelling with dynamic population to estimate excess deaths due to extreme temperatures.

Extreme heat has been linked to increased mortality. Monitoring the mortality burden attributable to extreme heat is crucial to inform policies, such as heat warnings, and prevent heat-related deaths. In this study, we evaluate excess mortality during summer 2022 in Switzerland, identify vulnerable populations and estimate temperature thresholds relevant for heat adaptation policies. We use nationwide mortality and population data during 2011-2022 by age, sex, day and canton. We develop a Bayesian ensemble modelling approach with dynamic population to predict expected mortality in summer 2022

Effects of ambient temperature on under-five mortality: a nationwide space-time-stratified case-crossover study in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Although climate change poses increasing risks to child health, particularly through temperature extremes, epidemiological evidence on its impact on child mortality is still limited. This study investigated the short-term effects of ambient temperatures (heat and cold) on under-five mortality in Brazil. METHODS: We conducted a space-time-stratified case-crossover study across 5570 Brazilian municipalities from 2000 to 2019, using data from the Brazilian Mortality Information System and from the Brazilian Daily Weather Gridded Data (BR-DWGD). We estimated relative risks (RRs) and 9

Projecting long-term excess risks of major infectious diseases associated with future extreme weather events in Thailand.

Climate change is postulated to impact infectious disease transmission, yet few studies have characterised the excess risks of infectious diseases associated with extreme weather events. To address this, we conducted a study estimating and projecting the impacts of extreme heat and precipitation on the incidence of major infectious diseases in Thailand. We developed, fitted and validated an analytical framework to model province-level disease cases and their relationship with extreme weather indicators based on historical data. We used generalised additive models to delineate the relationship

Pregnancy, birth, and postpartum under heat strain: Visibilising lived experiences and coping practices of women in rural Zimbabwe through an adapted participatory Photovoice approach.

Extreme heat, intensified by climate change, is an escalating global health threat linked to preterm birth, stillbirth, hypertensive disorders, and low birth weight. Yet little is known about how pregnant and postpartum women in low-resource settings experience and adapt to heat as a lived condition. In sub-Saharan Africa, where livelihoods depend on outdoor labour and health systems remain fragile, women's thermal vulnerability is compounded by social and infrastructural inequities. This study explores how pregnant and postpartum women in rural Zimbabwe experience and adapt to extreme heat, a

Warm-season temperatures and emergency department visits among children with health insurance.

High ambient temperatures have become more likely due to climate change and are linked to higher rates of heat-related illness, respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, mental health disorders, and other diseases. To date, far fewer studies have examined the effects of high temperatures on children versus adults, and studies including children have seldom been conducted on a national scale. Compared to adults, children have behavioral and physiological differences that may give them differential heat vulnerability. We acquired medical claims data from a large database of commercially insured U

The True Cost of Heat: Evaluating Heat-Related Mortality Estimation Methods in Texas.

Different ways of counting heat-related deaths (HRD) can give you very different numbers. This study examines HRD in Texas using three different definitions: The Optimal Temperature Method (OTM) estimates mortality based on deviations from a community's optimal temperature, capturing the effects of both moderate and extreme heat exposure. This method finds that 2.2% of summertime Texas mortality were heat related over the period 2010-2023. The Extreme Heat Method (XHM) counts deaths associated with extreme temperatures; we find that temperatures exceeding the 95th percentile were responsible f
