Evaluation of diagnostic procedures in chlamydial eye infection.

Sixty-six patients suffering from suspected chlamydial conjunctivitis or keratoconjunctivitis underwent direct examination and culture procedures on specimens from conjunctival swabs and corneal scraping for detection of Chlamydia trachomatis. Patient blood samples were also screened for the presence of antichlamydia IgG and IgA antibodies. Eye positivity was found in 12 and 15% of patients by using culture isolation and direct examination, respectively. In 3 out of the 8 patients with culture-proven chlamydial eye infection, all of them female, C. trachomatis was also isolated from the genita

Ocular chlamydial infection in a university eye clinic.

In the University Hospital, Kuala Lumpur, from 1984 to 1990, 184 patients with acute conjunctivitis were examined for chlamydial infection by direct immunofluorescence. Overall, 52 (28.3%) were found to be positive for chlamydial antigen. There was no significant difference in the detection rate between men and women and among the 3 major ethnic groups. The detection rate was highest among sexually active adults. Epidemiological and clinical features suggest that most of the chlamydial ocular infections seen were inclusion conjunctivitis and not classical trachoma.

Oral immunization against chlamydial eye infection.

The effects of enteric administration of different preparations of Chlamydia trachomatis prior to ocular challenge with live chlamydia were compared to the immunity that develops after recovery from ocular infection. Oral immunization with either live homologous serovar B or with formalin-killed heterologus serovar L2 did not influence the response to subsequent ocular challenge. Although oral immunization with live serovar led to protection against heterologous ocular challenge with serovar B, oral immunization with noninfectious UV-irradiated serovar L2 led to more severe and prolonged disea

Prevalence of bacterial eye infections and multidrug resistance patterns among eye infection suspected patients in Ethiopia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial eye infections are major global health issue in developing countries like Ethiopia, poor hygiene, limited healthcare infrastructure, and inadequate treatment options contribute to the increased burden of these infections, leading to significant ocular morbidity and potential blindness. Major bacterial pathogens, including Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, are responsible for these infections. The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to synthesize existing literature on the prevalence of

The role of hypochlorous acid in the management of eye infections: a case series.

Experiences from clinical practice suggest that hypochlorous acid (HOCl) used as adjuvant treatment can shorten the time to clinical resolution of blepharitis, particularly in relation to the ophthalmic complications that often occur with a blepharitis diagnosis. In addition, in clinical practice, HOCl adjuvant treatment also resulted in a viable option for the management of ophthalmic disorders other than blepharitis. This case series presents and discusses real-life experiences with using an HOCl ophthalmic spray to manage eye infections, further characterizing the use of HOCl for ophthalmic

Detection of infections of the eye with Chlamydia trachomatis by the polymerase chain reaction.

The aim of this study was to test the diagnostic feasibility of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for detection of infections with Chlamydia trachomatis in eye swabs from patients with conjunctivitis, and to establish the basic technique of the PCR for epidemiological survey. The results of the PCR were compared with the Mikro Trak immunofluorescence assay (IFA). From 49 specimens of patients with conjunctivitis, 31 were found positive by PCR (63%) and 23 by IFA (47%). On the other hand, in 10 normal eye specimens and 10 non-Chlamydia trachoma conjunctivitis specimens no Chlamydia trachomati

Lysozyme content of tears in normal subjects and in patients with external eye infections.

We studied the lysozyme content of tears in 267 subjects (521 eyes), including 241 healthy subjects, 7 patients (14 eyes) with bilateral blepharitis, 8 patients (12 eyes) with conjunctivitis, and 11 patients (16 eyes) with keratitis. The concentration of lysozyme in the tears rises with age between childhood and maturity. The highest values were seen in the age group of 21-40 years, and a decrease of lysozyme concentration occurred with an increase in age from 30-40 years. The mean lysozyme content of tears was 1,768 micrograms/ml in healthy subjects; no significant differences occurred betwee

Prevalence of chlamydial eye infection in patients attending an eye clinic, a VD clinic, and in healthy persons.

Chlamydial eye infection was detected in 28 of 983 ophthalmological patients with conjunctivitis or keratoconjunctivitis, with a peak frequency of over 9% in patients aged 16-20 years and with decreasing frequency thereafter. In patients aged 1 to 15 years chlamydial conjunctivitis was not observed. Chlamydial eye infection could not be detected in patients at a venereal diseases clinic, though chlamydial genital infection was rather frequent in these patients. Nor was Chlamydia trachomatis found in the eyes of healthy young adults. In patients with proved chlamydial conjunctivitis unilateral

Precaution and prevention of coronavirus disease 2019 infection in the eye.

Although current studies suggested that conjunctivitis is not a common presentation of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), several studies have reported the presence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) in ocular secretions. Coronavirus had not yet been successfully cultured from tears or conjunctival swabs in humans, neither SARS-CoV-2 nor SARS-CoV. However, live feline coronavirus has been isolated from conjunctival swabs. In addition, infection of COVID-19 through unprotected eye exposure had been suspected in several articles.
