Implicit false-belief processing in the human brain.

Eye-movement patterns in 'Sally-Anne' tasks reflect humans' ability to implicitly process the mental states of others, particularly false-beliefs - a key theory of mind (ToM) operation. It has recently been proposed that an efficient ToM system, which operates in the absence of awareness (implicit ToM, iToM), subserves the analysis of belief-like states. This contrasts to consciously available belief processing, performed by the explicit ToM system (eToM). The frontal, temporal and parietal cortices are engaged when humans explicitly 'mentalize' about others' beliefs. However, the neural under

Optokinetic stimulation can break Listing's law without induction of eye movement.

OBJECTIVE: Pseudo-images of three-dimensional eye movements captured on an infrared video oculogram can be translated onto a rotational expression around axial vector. This provides a subject's Listing's plane, which moves according to the head's orientation relative to gravity. Optokinetically induced changes in the cognitive gravitational reference frame will affect the context of Listing's plane. The purpose of this study was to estimate the effect of OKS on Listing's plane. METHODS: In this study, we presented vertical optokinetic visual stimulation with fixation targets, which are though

Word length and word frequency affect eye movements in dyslexic children reading in a regular (German) orthography.

We combined independently the word length and word frequency to examine if the difficulty of reading material affects eye movements in readers of German, which has high orthographic regularity, comparing the outcome with previous findings available in other languages. Sixteen carefully selected German-speaking dyslexic children (mean age, 9.5 years) and 16 age-matched controls read aloud four lists, each comprising ten unrelated words. The lists varied orthogonally in word length and word frequency: high-frequency, short; high-frequency, long; low-frequency, short; low-frequency, long. Eye mov

The thickness of the aging human lens obtained from corrected Scheimpflug images.

Commonly, measurements of lens thickness are performed using A-scan ultrasonography or slitlamp Scheimpflug photography. Both techniques have their drawbacks in the study of presbyopia: ultrasonography requires the velocity of sound in the lens which may change with age, whereas Scheimpflug photography requires knowing the refractive index of the lens to enable correction of the photographs for the distortion due to the refraction of the cornea and lens. By combining Scheimpflug photography and axial optical eye-length measurements, we were able to individually correct the Scheimpflug images f

Cardiac autonomic denervation in Parkinson's disease is linked to REM sleep behavior disorder.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have suggested a close connection between autonomic dysfunction and rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder, which differs in nature from other early-stage markers of Parkinson's disease. In this study we examined the relationship between rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder and autonomic dysfunction in Parkinson's disease as measured by cardiac beat-to-beat variability. METHODS: In 53 patients with Parkinson's disease and 36 controls, electrocardiographic trace from a polysomnogram was assessed for measures of beat-to-beat RR variability including RR-stand

Knowing what the brain is seeing in three dimensions: A novel, noninvasive, sensitive, accurate, and low-noise technique for measuring ocular torsion.

Torsional eye movements are rotations of the eye around the line of sight. Measuring torsion is essential to understanding how the brain controls eye position and how it creates a veridical perception of object orientation in three dimensions. Torsion is also important for diagnosis of many vestibular, neurological, and ophthalmological disorders. Currently, there are multiple devices and methods that produce reliable measurements of horizontal and vertical eye movements. Measuring torsion, however, noninvasively and reliably has been a longstanding challenge, with previous methods lacking rea

Eye Movements in Neuropsychological Tasks.

This chapter reviews how recording and analysis of eye movements have been applied to understanding cognitive functioning in patients with neurological disease. Measures derived from the performance of instructed eye movement tests such as the anti-saccade and memory-guided saccade tasks have been shown to be associated with cognitive test performance and the early stages of neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Other researchers have taken an ecological approach and recorded the uninstructed pattern of saccades made by patients during performance of establ

Eye Movement Research in the Twenty-First Century-a Window to the Brain, Mind, and More.

The study of eye movements not only addresses debilitating neuro-ophthalmological problems but has become an essential tool of basic neuroscience research. Eye movements are a classic way to evaluate brain function-traditionally in disorders affecting the brainstem and cerebellum. Abnormalities of eye movements have localizing value and help narrow the differential diagnosis of complex neurological problems. More recently, using sophisticated behavioral paradigms, measurement of eye movements has also been applied to disorders of the thalamus, basal ganglia, and cerebral cortex. Moreover, in c

Schizophrenia recognition via eye movement features in video paradigm.

Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder characterized by abnormal eye movements. However, existing methods for detecting these abnormalities rely primarily on static stimuli that lack ecological validity. This study explores the potential of video paradigms for capturing eye movement patterns specific to schizophrenia. Forty patients with schizophrenia (SZ) and forty healthy controls (HCs) completed eye movement tests and cognitive assessments. The participants watched two types of videos: an animated video with low cognitive load and a documentary with high social cognitive load, from which

Eye movements cannot explain vibration-induced visual motion and motion aftereffect.

Eye movements are thought to account for a number of visual motion illusions involving stationary objects presented against a featureless background or apparent motion of the whole visual field. We tested two different versions of the eye movement account: (a) the retinal slip explanation and (b) the nystagmus-suppression explanation, in particular their ability to account for visual motion experienced during vibration of the neck muscles, and for the visual motion aftereffect following vibration. We vibrated the neck (ventral sternocleidomastoid muscles, bilaterally, or right dorsal muscles)

Differences in eye movements and reading problems in dyslexic and normal children.

It has been suggested that eye movement abnormalities seen in dyslexics are attributable to their language problems. In order to investigate this claim, we studied eye movements in dyslexic children, during several non-reading tasks. Dyslexic children were compared to normal and backward readers on measures of fixation, vergence amplitude, saccade and smooth pursuit. The results were compared to the children's phonological ability. Dyslexic children (n = 26) had significantly worse eye movement stability during fixation of small targets than normal children (n = 39). Vergence amplitudes were l

Perimetry while moving the eyes: implications for the variability of visual field defects.

BACKGROUND: In standard perimetry, subjects fixate so that saccades are reduced and testing precision is increased. However, because vision in daily life requires eye movements, it is appropriate to assess visual fields during eye movement. METHODS: Perimetry was carried out in 8 healthy subjects and in 16 patients with visual field defects under conditions of a stable and moving fixation spot. Eye movements were simultaneously recorded with an eye tracker. Outcome measures included stimulus detection, variability of visual field border, and saccade amplitudes. RESULTS: Perimetric performanc

Central and peripheral choroidal thickness and eye length changes during accommodation.

PURPOSE: Eye length increases during accommodation, both on-axis and in the periphery. The aim of this study was to determine whether the peripheral choroid thins with accommodation and to determine the relationship with eye length changes measured at the same location. METHODS: Subjects included 53 young adults in good ocular and general health, with 19 emmetropes and 34 myopes. Measurements from the right eye were made for 0 D and 6 D accommodation stimuli for ±30° horizontal visual field/retinal locations in 10° steps. Valid eye length and choroidal thickness measurements were obtained for

The interaction of perceived distance with the perceived direction of visual motion during movements of the eyes and the head.

A horizontally moving target was followed by rotation of the eyes alone or by a lateral movement of the head. These movements resulted in the retinal displacement of a vertically moving target from its perceived path, the amplitude of which was determined by the phase and amplitude of the object motion and of the eye or head movements. In two experiments, we tested the prediction from our model of spatial motion (Swanston, Wade, & Day, 1987) that perceived distance interacts with compensation for head movements, but not with compensation for eye movements with respect to a stationary head. Impairments in Proprioceptively-Referenced Limb and Eye Movements in Chronic Stroke.

BACKGROUND: Upper limb proprioceptive impairments are common after stroke and affect daily function. Recent work has shown that stroke survivors have difficulty using visual information to improve proprioception. It is unclear how eye movements are impacted to guide action of the arm after stroke. Here, we aimed to understand how upper limb proprioceptive impairments impact eye movements in individuals with stroke. METHODS: Control (N = 20) and stroke participants (N = 20) performed a proprioceptive matching task with upper limb and eye movements. A KINARM exoskeleton with eye tracking was us

Oculopalatal myoclonus: eye movement studies, MRI findings and the difficulty of treatment.

Two cases of oculopalatal myoclonus with bilateral horizontal gaze palsies are presented. The abnormal vertical eye movements developed several months after brain stem haemorrhage. Eye movement measurements showed rhythmical vertical eye movements at similar rates (2.3 Hz and 2.4 Hz), unaffected by attempts to fixate, converge or gaze in any direction. T2-weighted MRI scans showed bilateral enlargement of the inferior olivary nuclei in both cases, which confirms the expected pathology previously demonstrated on autopsy. Both patients had severe oscillopsia and an attempt was made to improve th

Predictive Model for Dyslexia from Fixations and Saccadic Eye Movement Events.

BACKGROUND: Dyslexia is a disorder characterized by difficulty in reading such as poor speech and sound recognition. They have less capability to relate letters and form words and exhibit poor reading comprehension. Eye-tracking methodologies play a major role in analyzing human cognitive processing. Dyslexia is not a visual impairment disorder but it's a difficulty in phonological processing and word decoding. These difficulties are reflected in their eye movement patterns during reading. OBJECTIVE: The disruptive eye movement helps us to use eye-tracking methodologies for identifying dyslex

Eye movement abnormalities and their association with cognitive impairments in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Eye movement abnormalities have been identified in schizophrenia; however, their relevance to cognition is still unknown. In this study, we explored the general relationship between eye movements and cognitive function. METHODS: The three eye movement measures (scanpath length, horizontal position gain, and duration of fixations) that were previously reported to be useful in distinguishing subjects with schizophrenia from healthy subjects, as well as Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-III (WAIS-III) scores, were collected and tested for association in 113 subjects with schizophreni

Surgical intervention and accommodative responses, I: centripetal ciliary body, capsule, and lens movements in rhesus monkeys of various ages.

PURPOSE: To determine how surgically altering the normal relationship between the lens and the ciliary body in rhesus monkeys affects centripetal ciliary body and lens movement. METHODS: In 18 rhesus monkey eyes (aged 6-27 years), accommodation was induced before and after surgery by electrical stimulation of the Edinger-Westphal nucleus. Accommodative amplitude was measured by coincidence refractometry. Goniovideography was performed before and after intra- and extracapsular lens extraction (ICLE, ECLE) and anterior regional zonulolysis (ARZ). Centripetal lens/capsule movements, centripetal
