The messy landscape of eye movements and false memories.

Eye-Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a common treatment for PTSD. However, skeptics like James Ost question the theoretical underpinnings, highlight inconsistency of empirical findings surrounding the efficacy of such therapy, and warn against unknown drawbacks. Little is known about the impact of the eye movements, a critical component in EMDR, on susceptibility to false memories, and the existing literature is contradictory. We review the literature and present new findings to help tell the story of the effects of eye movements on memory. Taken as a whole, this sma

Eye movements in anorexia nervosa: State or trait markers?

OBJECTIVE: Differences in saccadic eye movements are widely reported in mental illnesses, and can indirectly inform our understanding of neurobiological and cognitive underpinnings of psychiatric conditions, including anorexia nervosa (AN). Preliminary research has suggested that individuals with AN may show specific eye movement abnormalities; whether these deficits are representative of state or trait effects is, however, unclear. The aim of this study was to identify whether there are demonstrable differences in performance on saccadic eye movement tasks in individuals with current AN (c-AN

Images: Facial cataplexy with demonstration of persistent eye movements.

A patient was transferred for management of "medication-refractory seizures" after failure of levetiracetam and valproate dual therapy. She had a life-long history of two types of events: periods in which she would rapidly and uncontrollably lapse into unconsciousness, and spells in which she would "pass out" but maintain consciousness, the latter happening with increasing frequency in association with laughing, as of late. She also reported hypnogogic/hypnopompic hallucinations, sleep paralysis, and disrupted nocturnal sleep. A clinical diagnosis of narcolepsy was made. The prevailing pathoph

Motion integration is anisotropic during smooth pursuit eye movements.

Smooth pursuit eye movements (pursuit) are used to minimize the retinal motion of moving objects. During pursuit, the pattern of motion on the retina carries not only information about the object movement but also reafferent information about the eye movement itself. The latter arises from the retinal flow of the stationary world in the direction opposite to the eye movement. To extract the global direction of motion of the tracked object and stationary world, the visual system needs to integrate ambiguous local motion measurements (i.e., the aperture problem). Unlike the tracked object, the s

Recurrence quantification analysis of eye movements during mental imagery.

Several studies demonstrated similarities of eye fixations during mental imagery and visual perception but-to our knowledge-the temporal characteristics of eye movements during imagery have not yet been considered in detail. To fill this gap, the same data is analyzed with conventional spatial techniques such as analysis of areas of interest (AOI), ScanMatch, and MultiMatch and with recurrence quantification analysis (RQA), a new way of analyzing gaze data by tracking re-fixations and their temporal dynamics. Participants viewed and afterwards imagined three different kinds of pictures (art, f

Strategic Eye Movements are Used to Support Object Authentication.

Authentication is an important cognitive process used to determine whether one's initial identification of an object is corroborated by additional sensory information. Although authentication is critical for safe interaction with many objects, including food, websites, and valuable documents, the visual orienting strategies used to garner additional sensory data to support authentication remain poorly understood. When reliable visual cues to counterfeit cannot be anticipated, distributing fixations widely across an object's surface might be useful. However, strategic fixation of specific objec

Isolated complete unilateral ptosis with intact extraocular eye movements.

An 88-year-old woman presented with a 2-day history of inability to open her left eye with no ocular discomfort or blurred vision. She had a long-standing history of diabetes mellitus, hypertension and stroke disease. Examination revealed an isolated complete left eye ptosis with no pupillary involvement and intact extraocular movements. There were no other neurological deficits and fatigability was not elicited. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed an acute infarct of the left red nucleus. Oculomotor nerve fascicles are widely separated in the midbrain before they exit at the interp

Parieto-frontal networks for eye-hand coordination and movements.

Eye-hand coordination lies at the core of our daily actions and interactions with objects and people around us, and is central to understanding how the brain creates internal models of the action space and generates movement within it. Eye-hand coordination remains a very complex and elusive problem, which is further complicated by its distributed representation in the brain. In fact, evolution did not confine such a crucial function to a single area, but rather assigned it to several distributed cortical and subcortical systems, where encoding mechanisms can satisfy multiple demands and the c

Disrupted Eye Movements in Preperimetric Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma.

PURPOSE: Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) can be associated with abnormal ocular motor behavior, possibly as a compensatory strategy following visual field loss. The aim of this study was to explore the characteristics of saccadic eye movements in patients with early-stage POAG without any detectable glaucomatous visual field loss (i.e., preperimetric POAG). METHODS: Binocular eye movements were explored in 16 patients with bilateral preperimetric POAG and 16 age-matched healthy controls in a cross-sectional, observational study. Crouzon Syndrome: Relationship of Eye Movements to Pattern Strabismus.

PURPOSE: To characterize conjugate eye movements in Crouzon syndrome (CS) patients with and without strabismus. METHODS: Smooth pursuit, saccades, horizontal optokinetic nystagmus (OKN), and horizontal vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) were recorded using binocular video-oculography (VOG) in 10 children with CS (5 orthotropic, 5 strabismic) and 12 age-matched controls. Hess-Lancaster plots were generated from Orbit 1.8 using rectus muscle pulley locations from computed tomography imaging. Two-dimensional eye scan paths from VOG recordings were compared with the Hess-Lancaster plots. RESULTS: Tar

Neural mechanisms of smooth pursuit eye movements in schizotypy.

Patients with schizophrenia as well as individuals with high levels of schizotypy are known to have deficits in smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEM). Here, we investigated, for the first time, the neural mechanisms underlying SPEM performance in high schizotypy. Thirty-one healthy participants [N = 19 low schizotypes, N = 12 high schizotypes (HS)] underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging at 3T with concurrent oculographic recording while performing a SPEM task with sinusoidal stimuli at two velocities (0.2 and 0.4 Hz). Behaviorally, a significant interaction between schizotypy group and

Covert anti-compensatory quick eye movements during head impulses.

BACKGROUND: Catch-up saccades during passive head movements, which compensate for a deficient vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), are a well-known phenomenon. These quick eye movements are directed toward the target in the opposite direction of the head movement. Recently, quick eye movements in the direction of the head movement (covert anti-compensatory quick eye movements, CAQEM) were observed in older individuals. Here, we characterize these quick eye movements, their pathophysiology, and clinical relevance during head impulse testing (HIT). METHODS: Video head impulse test data from 266 patie

Saccadic eye movements after low-dose oral alcohol exposure.

OBJECTIVES: The influence of low-dose alcohol intake on reflexive visually guided saccades was investigated. METHODS: 40 healthy human subjects were orally given alcohol resulting in low-dose alcohol concentration (less than 0.8‰) blood alcohol concentration. Before and after exposure, horizontal saccadic eye movements were recorded at several points in time. The recordings were evaluated with regard to accuracy of the eye movements, latency, the peak eye velocity and the time constant that characterizes the main sequence. The results were compared to recordings from a reference group. RESUL

[The influence of eye movements on monochromatic wavefront aberrations].

BACKGROUND: Wavefront-guided corneal surgery is a standard therapeutic option for correcting refractive errors. If the wavefront measured preoperatively is influenced by an incorrect alignment of the bulb, the ablation profile could be distorted and the quality of vision reduced. METHOD: Wavefront analysis was done on 49 eyes, examining the primary gaze of the bulb as well as abduction, adduction, elevation, and depression. RESULTS: The study demonstrated a significant influence of eye movements on astigmatic aberrations. Horizontal eye movements have a stronger influence than vertical ones

Variability of eye movements when viewing dynamic natural scenes.

How similar are the eye movement patterns of different subjects when free viewing dynamic natural scenes? We collected a large database of eye movements from 54 subjects on 18 high-resolution videos of outdoor scenes and measured their variability using the Normalized Scanpath Saliency, which we extended to the temporal domain. Even though up to about 80% of subjects looked at the same image region in some video parts, variability usually was much greater. Eye movements on natural movies were then compared with eye movements in several control conditions. "Stop-motion" movies had almost identi

Optokinetic stimuli: motion sickness, visual acuity, and eye movements.

BACKGROUND: It is commonly assumed that motion sickness caused by moving visual scenes arises from the illusion of self-motion (i.e., vection). HYPOTHESES: Both studies reported here investigated whether sickness and vection were correlated. The first study compared sickness and vection created by real and virtual visual displays. The second study investigated whether visual fixation to suppress eye movements affected motion sickness or vection. METHOD: In the first experiment subjects viewed an optokinetic drum and a virtual simulation of the optokinetic drum. The second experiment investig

The influence of repetitive eye movements on vergence performance.

We measured the peak velocity of convergence eye movement responses in four normal subjects before and after a large number of either repetitive vergence or repetitive saccadic eye movements. A 20% decrease in the mean value of peak velocity was observed in vergence responses after 100 repetitive step vergence eye movements. However, 100 cycles of slow sinusoidal vergence tracking did not induce any notable change in vergence dynamics. Five hundred repetitive saccadic eye movements also caused an approximately 20% decrease in peak velocity. The reduction in peak velocity was related to the num

Eye movements affect the perceived speed of visual motion.

Eye movements add a constant displacement to the visual scene, altering the retinal-image velocity. Therefore, in order to recover the real world motion, eye-movement effects must be compensated. If full compensation occurs, the perceived speed of a moving object should be the same regardless of whether the eye is stationary or moving. Using a pursue-fixate procedure in a perceptual matching paradigm, we found that eye movements systematically bias the perceived speed of the distal stimulus, indicating a lack of compensation. Speed judgments depended on the interaction between the distal stimu

Visually guided eye movements in patients with Wallenberg's syndrome.

To determine the lesions and the lateralization in patients with Wallenberg's syndrome, visually-guided eye movements were quantitatively analysed and these findings were compared with a lesioned site as revealed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The 8 patients could be clearly classified into two subgroups based on the functional test of eye movements. In 4 patients, optokinetic nystagmus (OKN), pursuit eye movements and fixation-suppression of caloric nystagmus (FS), utilizing the slow phase velocity as a parameter, were impaired toward the lesioned side in the medulla. In the remaining 4

Attention and target selection for smooth pursuit eye movements.

Two rhesus monkeys were trained to track a small moving target in the presence of a moving distractor. The target and distractor were distinguished by their color. Smooth pursuit eye movements were quantified in terms of the latency of the eye movement and the open-loop eye acceleration profile. Smooth pursuit latencies for single targets were on the order of 100 msec. When the target was paired with a distractor moving in the same direction as the target, pursuit latencies decreased to roughly 85 msec. When the target was paired with a distractor moving in the opposite direction, pursuit late
