BACKGROUND: Comprehensive facial analysis among transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) individuals undergoing facial feminization surgery (FFS) has created new opportunities to investigate facial asymmetry in adults. Although craniofacial microsomia (CFM) is typically identified in infancy, milder forms may go unrecognized, leaving gaps in diagnosis and treatment.
OBJECTIVES: The authors of this study examine facial asymmetry, including CFM, among TGD patients undergoing FFS and discuss appropriate surgical strategies.
METHODS: Adults registered male at birth undergoing de novo FFS from 2020 t

Peripheral facial palsy (PFP) causes pronounced facial asymmetry and functional impairment, highlighting the need for reliable, objective assessment. This study presents a novel, fully automated, reference-free method for quantifying facial symmetry using artificial intelligence (AI)-based facial landmark detection. A total of 405 datasets from 198 PFP patients were analyzed, each including nine standardized facial expressions covering both resting and dynamic movements. AI detected 478 landmarks per image, from which 225 paired landmarks were used to compute local asymmetry angles. Systematic

Injury to the frontal or other facial nerve branches can result in an asymmetry that can be very distressful to both patient and surgeon. This is especially true following cosmetic procedures such as rhytidectomy. We propose a means to create temporary symmetry while awaiting the possible return of nerve function. Botulinum neurotoxin causes a muscle paralysis lasting for approximately 3 months, and it is well established as the preferred treatment for blepharospasm. A case is presented in which botulinum toxin type A was injected into the opposite functioning frontalis muscle of a patient wit

Many conditions can compromise facial symmetry, resulting in an impairment of the affected person from both esthetic and functional points of view. For these reasons, a detailed, focused, and objective evaluation of facial asymmetry is needed, both for surgical planning and for treatment evaluation. In this study, we present a new quantitative method to assess symmetry in different facial thirds, objectively defined on the territories of distribution of trigeminal branches. A total of 70 subjects (40 healthy controls and 30 patients with unilateral facial palsy) participated. A stereophotogram

We recently reported finding asymmetry in the appearance of beauty on the face [Zaidel et al., Neuropsychologia, Vol. 33, pp. 649-655, 1995]. Here, we investigated whether facial beauty is a stable characteristic (on the owner's very face) or is in the perceptual space of the observer. We call the question 'the owner vs observer hypothesis'. We compared identity judgements and attractiveness ratings of observers. Subjects viewed left-left and right-right composites of faces and decided which most resembled the normal face (Experiment 1). Identity judgements (resemblance) are known to be associ

Condylar hyperplasia (CH) is a rare condition characterized by excessive growth of the mandibular condyle, leading to facial asymmetry, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction, and functional impairments such as chewing and speech difficulties. This report presents a 15-year-old patient with mandibular deviation, limited TMJ mobility, and facial asymmetry. Diagnostic imaging, including CT and planar bone scintigraphy with 99mTc-HMDP, revealed active right condylar hyperplasia, with a 14.29% radiotracer uptake difference, surpassing the 10% threshold for metabolic activity. The patient underw

INTRODUCTION: Radiotherapy is essential for achieving and maintaining local control in head and neck rhabdomyosarcoma (HNRMS) patients. However, radiotherapy may cause outgrowth disturbances of facial bone and soft tissue, resulting in facial asymmetry. The aim of this study was to develop a method to visualize and measure facial asymmetry in HNRMS survivors using three-dimensional (3D) imaging techniques.
METHODS: Facial deformity was evaluated in a multidisciplinary clinical assessment of 75 HNRMS survivors, treated with external beam radiotherapy (EBRT, n = 26) or Ablative surgery, MOulage

BACKGROUND: This study examines the potential contributions of environmental factors to variations in facial symmetry between identical twins.
METHODS: Identical male and female twins were recruited from the Twins Days Festival in 2009 and 2010. Subjects independently completed a comprehensive questionnaire on their medical and personal history, and then posed for digital facial photography from several different angles. Eight facial features from these photographs were measured using Adobe Photoshop, and these facial features were then analyzed against survey responses between twins through

OBJECTIVES: To determine the incidence and nature of facial asymmetry in patients referred for consideration of aesthetic rhinoplasty and to assess whether objective anthropometric facial measurements correlate with subjective perceptions of asymmetry.
DESIGN: Two independent observers measured facial features, including midline to medial and lateral canthi, tragus, ala, and oral commissure distances, in 234 prerhinoplasty surgical photographs. The photographs were rated by 10 independent observers for a global "first impression" of facial symmetry, and the relationship between anthropometric

37 subjects' facial electromyographic activity at the corrugator and zygomatic muscle regions were recorded while they were posing with happy and sad facial expressions. Analysis showed that the mean value of EMG activity at the left zygomatic muscle region was the highest, followed by the right zygomatic, left corrugator, and right corrugator muscle regions, while a happy facial expression was posed. The mean value of EMG activity at the left corrugator muscle region was the highest, followed by those for the right corrugator, left zygomatic, and right zygomatic muscle regions while a sad fac

The aim of the present study was to detect possible associations between trunk and cervical asymmetry and facial symmetry. Frontal cephalograms prepared in the natural head position, representing 79 subjects (40 males, 39 females) with mild to moderate trunk asymmetry, were analyzed separately for thoracic humps, lumbar prominences, and cervical inclination by discriminating two groups: right-sided-dominant and left-sided-dominant. The differences between the groups were analyzed using an unpaired 2-group t test. The results showed that location of the thoracic humps and inclination of the cer

Used alone, Lefort I procedures and surgical mandibular reduction and de-rotation do not always restore facial symmetry; but by first correcting mesiodistal disharmonies, the orthodontist makes it possible for the surgeon to achieve the best results. Sometimes, long term stability of these improvements is jeopardized when the occlusal plane gradually begins to tilt again and asymmetry reappears in the mandible. By using electromyographic analysis in a series of patients with severe transverse facial disharmony she has treated, the author shows the important role played by the muscles of mastic
