The role of antioxidants in facial nerve injury.

Oxidative stress contributes to the pathogenesis of facial nerve injury (FNI), yet the role of antioxidants in driving regeneration and functional recovery remains incompletely defined. This narrative review synthesizes studies published between 2008 and 2025 that evaluated antioxidant interventions in FNI across animal and limited human contexts. We systematically searched five databases and included 19 studies assessing oxidative stress markers and neural outcomes following antioxidant administration. To avoid overgeneralization, we stratified findings by injury model-crush/compression, tran

A Penetrating Facial Wound With Burn Injury.

A patient presented with a complex penetrating facial wound by high temperature steel. The hot steel penetrated right temple, ethmoid bone, and maxillary sinus, and then exited from his left cheek. He kept his right eye but lost his sight. For functional and esthetic considerations, treatments were provided in a staged procedure. First, the debridement was performed under the endoscope. The dead bone was removed, broken teeth were extracted, and necrotic tissue was cleaned. The exposed wounds were cleaned, and dressing was changed daily until the exudation was widely reduced. Then, a 50-mL exp

[Facial injury caused by an umbrella spoke].

We report an unusual injury of the face caused by the spoke of an automatic telescoping umbrella that come loose when the umbrella was opened. Due to the shot-like force of the spoke, the left nostril, septum and right wall of the nasal cavity were pierced. The part with the joint penetrated into the maxillary antrum. In order to remove the spoke, wire scissors had to be used to cuff off the spoke's joint inside the surgically opened maxillary sinus.

Transtympanic facial nerve injury in welders.

The risk for ear injury from molten metal or hot sparks produced during welding procedures is small, but the effects can be significant. Burns, tympanic membrane perforations and chronic otorrhoea are the most common results. Rare cases of inner ear injury and facial nerve paralysis have also been reported. Two cases recently encountered at our institution highlight the risk that exists for facial nerve injury. One patient suffered a significant facial nerve injury and deafness, while the other had a transient facial paresis. The injuries occurred when molten metal (slag) and a hot spark fell

Vascular injury and penetrating facial trauma.

Three patients with gunshot wounds to facial and vascular structures were described. They demonstrate the importance of angiography in the acute care phases of treatment. In one case, angiography lead to eventual surgical management of an arteriovenous fistula. The other two cases described arterial injury that required careful surgical follow-up to detect delayed complications.

A Systematic Review of Head, Neck and-Facial Injuries in Cricket.

This systematic review was conducted to identify the incidence, nature and mechanisms of head, neck and facial (HNF) injuries in cricket and the reported use of helmets. Five databases were searched up to 30th November 2020. From peer-reviewed cricket injury studies published in English, studies reporting on HNF cricket injuries as per the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines were selected. Twenty-nine studies were included. HNF injuries had a cumulative total of 794/5,886 injuries equating to 13% of all injuries. Non- specified HNF injuries (n

[Facial dog bite injuries in children: retrospective study of 77 cases].

INTRODUCTION: The face is the area most vulnerable for dog bites in children. Surgical management is an emergency to prevent infection, functional and aesthetic outcomes. The aim of this study was to define a new gravity scale, and to determine a prevention policy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In our maxillofacial and plastic surgery department, we conducted a retrospective study from 2002 to 2010, including 77 children under 16 years old, victims of facial dog bite. We analyzed epidemiological, clinical data, surgical outcomes. RESULTS: The mean age was 5.36 years. Dogs were principally represente

Horse-related facial injuries: the perceptions and experiences of riding schools.

This study aimed to investigate the perceptions and experiences of New Zealand horse riding schools with regard to horse-related facial injuries. All the riding schools listed in the New Zealand electronic phonebook directory were surveyed by post. The survey questions covered riding schools' perceptions of rider profile, general and facial injury patterns and safety equipment used. The face was perceived to be the most common injury site by only 4% of respondents. Helmets were enforced in only 35% of the schools during unmounted activities. Nearly half the schools did not enforce any safety e

A retrospective analysis of gunshot injuries to the maxillo-facial region.

This study analysed the prevalence, demography, soft- and hard-tissue injury patterns, management and complications of gunshot injuries to the maxillo-facial region in 301 patients treated at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town. The number of patients presenting with maxillo-facial injuries caused by gunshot increased over the 15-year study period. The majority were caused by civilian type low-velocity hand-guns and were purposefully and intentionally inflicted by others. Males in their third decade of life and of low socioeconomic status were most often the victims. The wounding effects of thes

[Modern principles in treatment of complex injuries of the facial bones].

Concepts in the treatment of craniomaxillofacial fractures have changed over the last 15 years. Modern imaging techniques have become a central part in establishing a proper diagnosis. Advanced life support and intensive care medicine allow for early primary fracture treatment. The former principles of minimal exposure of bone fragments using small incisions have been replaced by principles from reconstructive craniofacial surgery comprising extensive subperiosteal dissection, exposure of all fracture lines, open reduction and rigid internal fixation. Missing bony structures are replaced prima

[Injuries of the facial skull. First aid and possibilities for reconstruction].

Trauma of the facial skeleton often occurs together with other injuries. Treatment of these patients demand cooperation of all surgical disciplines in order to ensure operative treatment in only a few steps. In all facial injury, fractures of the facial skeleton must be excluded. In clinical examination, occlusion of the teeth is a very important symptom, diagnosis is established by radiology. It is the aim of the treatment to restore the facial skeleton in a good occlusion and position of the bones. It is necessary to restore the function of the stomatognatic system, of the paranasal sinuses

Bite marks, oral and facial injuries--harbingers of severe child abuse?

Bite mark evidence has been admitted in a vast number of cases in courts throughout the United States, as well as other countries. Because there is variation in the dentition of humans, if bite marks are noted in a victim, it is possible in many cases to determine the identity of the perpetrator depending on the quality of the bite mark, its age, lack of distortion and documentation. In other cases, facial injuries, including damage to the frenum and teeth in addition to the face, may point to nonaccidental injury if the history corroborates this condition.

The surgical management of facial nerve injury.

The surgical management of facial nerve injuries is dependent upon a thorough understanding of facial nerve anatomy, nerve physiology, and microsurgical techniques. When possible, primary neurorrhaphy is the "gold standard" repair technique. Injuries resulting in long nerve gaps or a significant delay between the time of injury and repair requires alterative techniques, such as nerve grafts, nerve transfers, regional muscle transfers, free tissue transfers, and static procedures. Scrupulous technique, selection of the appropriate surgical management, and aggressive physiotherapy with motor ree

Facial trauma and ocular/orbital injury.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Ocular injuries occur commonly in patients with facial trauma. Patients with significant eye injuries may present with grossly normal eyes and good visual acuity; however, subsequent ocular disorders may become apparent. The estimates of incidence vary considerably. Trauma is the second leading cause of blindness, and a review is, therefore, warranted. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Several extensive studies are reviewed. Blunt and penetrating trauma are examined by their respective subdivisions. The initial assessment and ophthalmologic examination of patients with facial

Facial nerve injury in cochlear implantation.

We present eight cases of FN dysfunction after cochlear implantation. Four mechanisms of injury are proposed. The most common injury occurs from the heat of a bur shaft rotating over the FN in the facial recess. Several suggestions are made to help prevent the type of injuries we have seen. Preoperative imaging and intraoperative FN monitoring may be of general assistance in avoiding injuries to the FN, especially in cases of revision surgery and congenital malformations.

Facial nerve injury and hemifacial spasm.

We studied evidence of facial nerve damage in patients with hemifacial spasm. Three types of evidence of nerve damage were analyzed: objectively measured weakness in eyelid protractor strength, clinically evident weakness of muscles innervated by the seventh nerve, and clinically evident aberrant seventh nerve regeneration. Of the 60 patients in the study, 54 (90%) had at least one of these features of seventh nerve damage. Objectively measured eyelid protractor weakness was noted in 27 of 58 patients (47%) who were tested. Clinically apparent weakness of at least one of four facial muscle gro
