Brain correlates of musical and facial emotion recognition: evidence from the dementias.

The recognition of facial expressions of emotion is impaired in semantic dementia (SD) and is associated with right-sided brain atrophy in areas known to be involved in emotion processing, notably the amygdala. Whether patients with SD also experience difficulty recognizing emotions conveyed by other media, such as music, is unclear. Prior studies have used excerpts of known music from classical or film repertoire but not unfamiliar melodies designed to convey distinct emotions. Patients with SD (n = 11), Alzheimer's disease (n = 12) and healthy control participants (n = 20) underwent tests of

Impaired conscious recognition of negative facial expressions in patients with locked-in syndrome.

The involvement of facial mimicry in different aspects of human emotional processing is widely debated. However, little is known about relationships between voluntary activation of facial musculature and conscious recognition of facial expressions. To address this issue, we assessed severely motor-disabled patients with complete paralysis of voluntary facial movements due to lesions of the ventral pons [locked-in syndrome (LIS)]. Patients were required to recognize others' facial expressions and to rate their own emotional responses to presentation of affective scenes. LIS patients were select

Social functioning and facial expression recognition in survivors of pediatric brain tumors.

OBJECTIVE: To assess social functioning and facial expression recognition skill in survivors of pediatric brain tumors (BT) as compared to children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA). METHODS: The social functioning of 51 survivors of BT and 31 children with JRA was assessed using a facial expression recognition task, questionnaire ratings of social functioning, and an IQ screener. RESULTS: After controlling for estimated IQ, survivors of BT made significantly more errors interpreting adult facial expressions as compared to children with JRA. Additionally, history of therapy and diagno

Fifteen inches from cancer: early recognition of facial lesions by the dentist.

Skin cancer is an increasing malignancy worldwide, and dentists are in a good position to observe their patients' faces for worrisome lesions. Most skin cancers are caused by actinic damage. The dentist must appreciate the characteristics of sun damage and be familiar with the clinical signs and symptoms of the more common premalignant and malignant facial lesions to appropriately evaluate the face. We review the features of freckles and moles, as well as those of seborrheic keratosis. Sun damage is discussed to aid in understanding the etiological role of ultraviolet exposure in the developme

Sleep deprivation and hemispheric asymmetry for facial recognition reaction time and accuracy.

We investigated the processing of emotional stimuli during a non-sleep-deprived state and following sleep deprivation in 36 right-handed men. Using the visual half-field technique, cartoon line drawings of emotional facial expressions were flashed on a computer screen for 250 msec. The participants were instructed to remember the content of the picture seen and to recognize it among nine alternatives shown immediately after the display of a single picture. Compared to the nondeprived condition, response latencies increased and accuracy decreased in sleep deprivation. Moreover, response latenci

A generalised deficit can account for problems in facial emotion recognition in schizophrenia.

Neuroimaging research has shown localised brain activation to different facial expressions. This, along with the finding that schizophrenia patients perform poorly in their recognition of negative emotions, has raised the suggestion that patients display an emotion specific impairment. We propose that this asymmetry in performance reflects task difficulty gradations, rather than aberrant processing in neural pathways subserving recognition of specific emotions. A neural network model is presented, which classifies facial expressions on the basis of measurements derived from human faces. After

Enhancing the recognition and production of facial expressions of emotion by children with mental retardation.

The ability to recognize and respond appropriately to facial expressions of emotion is essential for interpersonal interaction. Individuals with mental retardation have problems not only in recognizing but also in accurately producing facial expressions of emotion. In Experiment 1, directed rehearsal was used to teach six boys with mild and moderate mental retardation to increase their ability to recognize facial expressions of emotion. In addition, their ability to produce the six basic facial expressions of emotion was periodically assessed throughout the study. The results showed that the b

The relationships among facial emotion recognition, social skills, and quality of life.

Forty-six adults with mild or moderate mental retardation living in a large residential facility were administered the socialization domain of the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, a subjective measure of quality of life, and a facial emotion recognition test. There were significant differences in accuracy of emotion recognition among specific emotions. However, the only significant correlate of facial emotion recognition was IQ. Possible relationships among facial emotion recognition and basic versus more subtle indices of socialization are explored.

Super-recognizers sample visual information of superior computational value for facial recognition.

Super-recognizers-individuals with exceptionally high face recognition abilities-are a key exemplar of biological visual expertise. Recent eye-tracking evidence suggests that their expertise may be driven by exploratory viewing behaviour during learning, but it remains unclear whether this perceptual sampling is functional for face identity processing. Here, we develop a novel approach to quantify the computational value of face information samples and test the utility of information sampling in super-recognizers. Using measurements of eye gaze behaviour, we reconstructed the retinal informati

AI-based emotion recognition in dementia through facial expression: A scoping review.

Emotion assessment in dementia care is vital for patient well-being and effective care planning. Traditional methods are often subjective and time-consuming. This study examines the use of AI-based facial expression analysis for emotion recognition in dementia patients. A scoping review was conducted using the SPIDER strategy. Five databases-PubMed, Scopus, PsycInfo, ProQuest, and IEEE Xplore -were consulted, with additional records identified through snowballing. Data on participant characteristics, intervention details, non-AI comparisons, and clinical outcomes were categorized. Two authors

Comparative study of emotional facial expression recognition among Prader-Willi syndrome subtypes.

BACKGROUND: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a congenital disease caused by a rare and generally non-inherited genetic disorder. The inability to recognise facial expressions of emotion is an apparent social cognition deficit in people diagnosed with PWS. The main objective of the present study is to compare the ability to recognise emotional facial expression, in both non-contextualised and contextualised scenarios, among the main subtypes of PWS and a control group. METHODS: The sample consisted of 46 children divided into three groups: deletion (n = 10), maternal uniparental disomy (mUPD) (n

Prediagnosis recognition of acute ischemic stroke by artificial intelligence from facial images.

Stroke is a major threat to life and health in modern society, especially in the aging population. Stroke may cause sudden death or severe sequela-like hemiplegia. Although computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are standard diagnosis methods, and artificial intelligence models have been built based on these images, shortage in medical resources and the time and cost of CT/MRI imaging hamper fast detection, thus increasing the severity of stroke. Here, we developed a convolutional neural network model by integrating four networks, Xception, ResNet50, VGG19, and Efficient

Facial Emotion Recognition Deficit in Children with Moderate/Severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Although previous studies have reported a facial expression classification deficit among adults with SDB, we do not know whether these findings can be generalized to children. In our study, children with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) were divided into three groups: primary snoring (n = 51), mild obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) (n = 39), and moderate/severe OSA (n = 26). All participants, including 20 healthy controls, underwent an overnight polysomnography recording and the Emotional Expression Recognition Task. Psychosocial problems were evaluated using the parent-reported Strengths and Diff

Recognition of Fetal Facial Ultrasound Standard Plane Based on Texture Feature Fusion.

In the process of prenatal ultrasound diagnosis, accurate identification of fetal facial ultrasound standard plane (FFUSP) is essential for accurate facial deformity detection and disease screening, such as cleft lip and palate detection and Down syndrome screening check. However, the traditional method of obtaining standard planes is manual screening by doctors. Due to different levels of doctors, this method often leads to large errors in the results. Therefore, in this study, we propose a texture feature fusion method (LH-SVM) for automatic recognition and classification of FFUSP. First, ex

Childhood emotional maltreatment, anxiety, attachment, and mindfulness: Associations with facial emotion recognition.

The current study investigated factors thought to contribute to facial emotion processing. Female university students (N = 126) completed self-report measures of childhood emotional maltreatment, anxiety symptoms, attachment anxiety and avoidance, and trait mindfulness before completing a facial emotion recognition task, where they viewed sequences of faces that incorporated progressively more emotional content until they were able to correctly identify the emotion. They completed the task under low and high cognitive load conditions to distinguish between relatively effortful versus automatic

Facial affect recognition training in autism: can we animate the fusiform gyrus?

One of the most consistent findings in the neuroscience of autism is hypoactivation of the fusiform gyrus (FG) during face processing. In this study the authors examined whether successful facial affect recognition training is associated with an increased activation of the FG in autism. The effect of a computer-based program to teach facial affect identification was examined in 10 individuals with high-functioning autism. Blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) changes in the FG and other regions of interest, as well as behavioral facial affect rec

Impaired facial emotion recognition in early-onset right mesial temporal lobe epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: Anteromedial temporal lobe regions, particularly the amygdala, participate in the recognition of emotions from facial expressions. The authors studied the ability of facial emotion recognition (ER) in subjects with symptomatic epilepsy, evaluating whether mesial temporal lobe damage is related to an impairment in the recognition of specific emotions and whether the onset of seizures in a critical period of life could prevent the development of ER. METHODS: Groups included patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) with MRI evidence of mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS) (n = 33); pati

Automated facial recognition and candidate list rank change of computer generated facial approximations generated with multiple eye orb positions.

Expanding on research previously reported by the authors, this study further examines the recognizability of ReFace facial approximations generated with the following eye orb positions: (i) centrally within the bony eye socket, (ii) 1.0mm superior and 2.0mm lateral relative to center, and (iii) 1.0mm superior and 2.5mm lateral relative to center. Overall, 81% of the test subjects' approximation ranks improved with the use of either of the two supero-lateral eye orbs. Highly significant performance differences (p<0.01) were observed between the approximations with centrally positioned eye orbs
