[Unusual facies with delayed development and multiple malformations in a 14-month-old boy].

Schinzel-Giedion syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant genetic disease and has the clinical features of severe delayed development, unusual facies, and multiple congenital malformations. In this case report, a 14-month-old boy had the clinical manifestations of delayed development, unusual facies (prominent forehead, midface retraction, hypertelorism, low-set ears, upturned nose, and micrognathia), and multiple congenital malformations (including cerebral dysplasia, dislocation of the hip joint, and cryptorchidism). The karyotype analysis and copy number variations showed no abnormalities, and

Cataplectic facies: clinical marker in the diagnosis of childhood narcolepsy-report of two cases.

BACKGROUND: Narcolepsy is a chronic disease and is commonly diagnosed in adulthood. However, more than half of the patients have onset of symptoms in childhood and/or adolescence. The full spectrum of clinical manifestations, namely excessive daytime sleepiness, cataplexy, hypnagogic hallucinations, and sleep paralysis, is usually not present at disease onset, delaying diagnosis during childhood. Mean delay in diagnosis since symptom onset is known to be several years. Initial manifestations can sometimes be as subtle as only partial drooping of eyelids leading to confusion with a myasthenic c

Individualization of a syndrome with mental deficiency, macrocranium, peculiar facies, and cardiac and skeletal anomalies.

The authors report four unrelated girls presenting mild mental deficiency and a distinct malformation syndrome, mainly consisting of short stature, macrocranium, peculiar facies with prominent forehead, hypertelorism and exophthalmos, cardiac anomalies and cutis laxa with characteristic wrinkled palms and soles, typical ribs, small vertebral bodies and slender long bones. All were sporadic cases of non-consanguineous parents of advanced age at their births, suggesting a de novo autosomal dominant mutation.

[Unusual facies and recurrent high triglycerides for more than one year in a girl].

A girl, aged 1 year and 9 months, was found to have hypertriglyceridemia in the neonatal period, with unusual facies and signs of dark skin all over the body, disappearance of subcutaneous adipose, acanthosis nigricans of the neck, excessive and thick hair, empty cheeks, muscle hypertrophy of the extremities, hepatomegaly, and neutrophil deficiency. Whole exome sequencing of monogenic disorder revealed a homozygote mutation in the BSCL2 gene, c.974 (exon 7)_c.975 (exon 7) insG. Her parents were heterozygotes for this locus. The girl was diagnosed with congenital generalized lipodystrophy (CGL)

Autoantibodies to neuronal antigens in children with focal epilepsy and no prima facie signs of encephalitis.

OBJECTIVE: There is increasing awareness of neuronal autoantibodies and their impact on the pathogenesis of epilepsy. We investigated children with focal epilepsy in order to provide an estimate of autoantibody frequency within a pediatric population without prima facie evidence of encephalitis using a broad panel of autoantibodies. This was done to assess the specificity of antibodies and to see whether antibodies might be of modifying influence on the course of focal epilepsies. METHOD: We searched for autoantibodies in 124 patients with focal epilepsy (1-18 years; mean 10; 6 years). Sera w

Asymmetric crying facies with a couple of primary mandibular central incisor and 22q11 deletion.

Facial asymmetry present only on crying has been described as a separate entity and termed asymmetric crying facies. The cause of the facial asymmetry in this disorder is congenital absence or hypoplasia of the depressor anguli oris muscle at the corner of the mouth. This defect is associated at times with major congenital anomalies, most commonly in the cardiovascular system. Chromosome 22q11 microdeletions in cases with ACF have been reported. We report a newborn infant who had ACF associated with a couple of primary mandibular central incisor teeth and chromosome 22q11 microdeletion. This c

Asymmetric crying facies and associated congenital anomalies: prospective study and review of the literature.

Congenital asymmetric crying facies, a minor congenital anomaly due to absence or hypoplasia of the depressor anguli oris muscle on one side of the mouth, is associated at times with major congenital anomalies, most commonly in the cardiovascular system. In a prospective study of 5532 infants born at the Assaf Harofeh Medical Center, Israel, during 12 months (January to December 1998), 17 infants (an incidence of 0.31%) had asymmetric crying facies. One of the affected infants had ventricular septal defect and another infant had VATER (vertebral defects, imperforate anus, tracheoesophageal fis

Brachydactyly type B with its distinct facies and 'Cooks syndrome' are the same entity.

A sibling pair with brachydactyly type B born to a normal non-consanguineous couple are described and the severity of their condition discussed. It is proposed that a subgroup of individuals with brachydactyly type B principally involving the nails and distal phalanges, and also having distinct facies, might be identical to individuals having 'Cooks syndrome'.

Multiple lateral meningoceles, distinctive facies and skeletal anomalies: a new case of Lehman syndrome.

We describe a 19-year-old boy who presented with facial dysmorphism, multiple lateral meningoceles, skeletal abnormalities and normal intelligence. Neurofibromatosis and Marfan syndrome were excluded. Electron microscopy of the skin showed non-specific abnormalities suggesting a connective tissue disorder. The features of this boy closely resemble those in a mother and daughter with Lehman syndrome.

Congenital Generalized Hypertrichosis, Gingival Hyperplasia, a Coarse Facies with Constriction Bands: A Rare Association.

Congenital generalized hypertrichosis terminalis is a rare primary hypertrichotic condition, of unknown etiology presenting in the pediatric population. Though benign in nature, there is considerable psychosocial trauma attached to this, owing to the cosmetic disfigurement it produces. The association of gingival fibromatosis and a coarse facies could further worsen the cosmesis. Thus, a multidisciplinary approach involving a psychologist, a dentist apart from the dermatologist would be mandatory. We present this rare syndrome with the purpose of getting a better insight regarding the inherita

Lymphedema, cardiac septal defects, and characteristic facies: possible new case of Irons-Bianchi syndrome.

We describe a Dutch girl with fetal hydrops, congenital lymphedema of the lower legs, complex congenital cardiac malformation, and a typical face with epicanthal folds. This particular combination of symptoms has been previously described by Irons and Bianchi in 1996. Our report confirms their observation and suggests that this particular constellation of symptoms may constitute a new syndrome. Molecular analysis confirms this statement by demonstrating absence of mutations in several genes known to be involved in syndromes with lymphedema.

Two patients with asymmetric crying facies, normal cardiovascular systems and deletion of chromosome 22q11.

We report two unrelated patients with Asymmetric Crying Facies (ACF) and 22q11 deletion. In the first case ACF was the presenting feature. Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization (FISH) revealed 22q11 deletion and subsequent echocardiography demonstrated a normal cardiovascular system. The second presented with hypoparathyroidism, shown on FISH to be secondary to 22q11 deletion. Echocardiography was normal and ACF was found incidentally. Deletion of 22q11 has been reported with ACF occurring as part of the Cardiofacial syndrome (CFS) [Giannotti A, Mingarelli R, (1994): Am J Med Genet 53: 303-304] bu

Ohdo-like blepharophimosis syndrome with distinctive facies, neonatal hypotonia, mental retardation and hypoplastic teeth.

We report four children with unusual facial features including severe blepharophimosis, ptosis, and a distinctive nose with a broad flat tip and a depressed bridge. All four patients were markedly hypotonic and had severe feeding difficulties and developmental delay. Two had congenital heart defects and all three who survived had hypoplastic teeth. Both of the male patients had cryptorchidism. These four children have a distinctive syndrome which is similar to that reported by Biesecker (J Med Genet (1991) 28: 131-134).
