Delayed reepithelialization and scarring deregulation following drug-induced toxic epidermal necrolysis.

A 51-year-old Caucasian woman developed severe drug-induced toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) due to allopurinol. The withdrawal of the culprit drug was unfortunately delayed, and dramatic retardation of reepithelialization was observed. At that stage of disease evolution, an inflammatory cell infiltrate was present in the dermis. Coverage of eroded lesions by frozen cultured keratinocyte allografts failed to hasten reepithelialization compared to ungrafted sites. This unusual protracted TEN evolution was followed by the development of extensive hypertrophic and keloid scars. Several biopsies w

Transglutaminases as targets for pharmacological inhibition.

Transglutaminases (TGases), a family of enzymes that catalyze the formation of epsilon-(gamma-glutamyl)lysine isopeptide linkage, play an important physiological role in hemostasis, wound healing, assembly and remodeling of the extracellular matrix, cell signaling and apoptosis. Although many members of this class of enzymes have been known for decades, their role in various physiological and pathological processes is still a subject of substantial research and debate. Convincing evidence exists that TGases are involved in formation of cytotoxic proteinatious aggregates in Alzheimer's, Hunting

Rosai-Dorfman Disease of pancreas: rare aetiology mimicking malignancy.

Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is a non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis which usually presents as painless lymphadenopathy. Extranodal involvement is known to occur in various organs, and less than ten cases with primary pancreatic involvement have been reported previously. This case report details the clinical course of an elderly female, presenting with upper abdominal discomfort and imaging suggestive of malignancy. Multiple non-diagnostic fine-needle aspirations were followed by surgical intervention. Histopathological evaluation revealed a pancreatic mass with characteristic features of RDD. T

Giant thigh hemosiderotic/aneurysmal dermatofibroma: Case report with radiologic-pathologic correlation.

Hemosiderotic/aneurysmal variant of dermatofibroma (DF) is infrequent and may be misdiagnosed with malignant lesions. We report the case of a giant (7.6cm) subcutaneous hemosiderotic/aneurysmal DF (H/ADF) of the thigh in a 53-year-old female patient. Internal arterial and venous hypervascularity was seen by spectral Doppler ultrasound. Magnetic resonance image showed a discrete homogeneous hypointense in T1-weighted images (WI) and T2-WI mass, with hyperintense areas in fat-suppressed T2-WI. The histology revealed a monotonous fusocelular proliferation without atypia, positive for CD163, facto

Giant cell collagenoma in a patient with Cowden syndrome: A rare case report and literature review with a focus on the spectrum of sclerotic fibroma and giant cell collagenoma.

Sclerotic fibroma (SF) is a rare subset of dermal fibromas that occurs sporadically or in association with Cowden syndrome (CS). We report a case of a patient with known CS and a solitary lesion on the scalp. Histologic examination demonstrated a well-circumscribed lesion with sclerotic dermis and a whorled collagen pattern, multinucleated giant cells, and dendritic spindle cells. Nuclear atypia or mitotic figures were not noted. The giant cells were negative for Melan-A, SOX-10, EMA, SOX-10, and factor XIIIa. These findings are consistent with a giant cell collagenoma (GCC). Despite possible

Calcifying fibrous pseudotumor in the pelvic cavity: A case report and review of the literature.

Calcifying fibrous pseudotumors (CFPs) are rare benign lesions mostly occurring in the limbs, necks and gastrointestinal tracts of young adults. In the present study, we report the first known case of a pelvic CFP in China in a 67-year-old male patient. The solitary tumor had an extremely regular shape and was in the vicinity of the sigmoid colon. Surgical resection was performed and the tumor was histologically diagnosed as CFP. We reviewed 64 cases of CFPs and discussed the clinical features of this disease in China and other countries. We found that the CFPs were most common in patients age

Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma: A Clinical, Histopathological and Immunohistochemical Study of 42 Cases with Emphasis on Stromal Features.

Nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a benign but aggressive tumor of unknown etiology, typically occurring in adolescent males. It is described as a rare neoplasm; however, the prevalence seems to have geographic differences. All cases referred to our head and neck clinical and pathology service were reviewed. Most of the patients presented at an advanced stage. The clinical and radiographic features are presented and discussed. Histologically, the tumor shows a highly vascular fibrous proliferation with characteristic plump, angulated and stellate cells, categorized as fibroblasts. Immunohistochem

Managing isolated subglottic juvenile xanthogranuloma without tracheostomy: case report and review of literature.

Juvenile Xanthogranuloma (JXG) is a dendritic cell related histiocytic disorder which usually presents in the first year of life as a solitary cutaneous granuloma. Isolated presentation in the upper airway is very rare but can result in severe respiratory distress, especially in young children. We present the case of a 5-month-old male with an isolated subglottic JXG lesion. Endoscopic excision provided symptomatic relief and avoided the need for tracheostomy. The lesion has completely resolved 17 months later. Surgical excision without tracheostomy was the treatment of choice in two of the fo

Mycosis fungoides progression and chronic solvent exposure.

The effect of repeated exposure to specific chemicals on the initiation or progression of mycosis fungoides (MF) remains unsettled. A patient with low-grade patch stage MF progressively developed MF plaques restricted to his arms, and a tumour on his right thigh. These areas were subject to repeated exposure to solvents. His thigh was indeed in close contact with his trousers pocket where he used to store a wiping rag drenched into white spirit and cellulosic thinner. Immunophenotyping these lesions revealed a dense LCA+, CD2+, CD3+, CD4+, CD5+, CD7+, CD45+, CD45RO+ T-cell infiltrate admixed w

Juvenile hyaline fibromatosis: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile hyaline fibromatosis (JHF) is a rare, inherited condition characterized by tumor-like growth of hyalinized fibrous tissue on the head and neck, joint contractures, and gingival hypertrophy. There may be marked clinical heterogeneity. METHODS: We present a case of a 3-year-old Haitian boy with multiple firm nodules on the scalp and chin without joint contractures or gingival hypertrophy. Family history was not available. RESULTS: Biopsy specimens from three scalp nodules were processed with routine and immunohistochemical stains. The matrix was periodic acid Schiff (PAS)

Recurred Castleman's disease containing a fibrohistiocytic nodular lesion with vascular occlusion.

A recurring case of Castleman's disease containing a fibrohistiocytic nodular lesion is presented. The recurred tumor was found in the mediastinum of a 40 year old Japanese female who had undergone the extirpation of a mediastinal tumor 18 years previously and had been suffering from rheumatoid arthritis 5 years after the initial removal. Microscopically, the present tumor and the initial removed tumor fulfilled the morphologic criteria for the hyaline-vascular type of Castleman's disease. A well-demarcated nodular lesion (1.5 cm in diameter) was located in the present tumor. It consisted of i

Multiple myxoid cellular neurothekeomas in a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus.

Cellular neurothekeoma is a cutaneous tumor with a distinctive histopathologic appearance characterized by a dermal-based multinodular proliferation of epithelioid to spindled cells. Although the tumor may show varying amounts of myxoid stroma, extensive myxoid change is uncommon. The tumor typically presents as a solitary nodule with a predilection for the head and neck and upper limbs; examples of multiple cellular neurothekeomas are decidedly rare. The present report describes a unique case of multiple myxoid cellular neurothekeomas arising in a 60-year-old female with systemic lupus erythe

Primary Cutaneous Melanoma With Sebocyte-like Melanocytes: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Melanocytes with clear vacuolated cytoplasm and scalloped nuclei, resembling mature sebocytes, can occur in congenital, acquired, and blue melanocytic nevi but are rare in malignant melanomas. A case of primary cutaneous melanoma with sebocyte-like cells is reported. The patient was a 75-year-old male patient with a large pigmented lesion located on his right forearm. Histopathologically, the tumor showed two distinctive types of neoplastic cells: atypical melanocytes with eosinophilic cytoplasm and scattered cells with scalloped nuclei, sometimes containing pseudoinclusions, and clear multiva

Lymphedematous Fibroepithelial Polyp Without Associated Condom Catheter Use: A Case Report With Review of the Literature.

Lymphedematous fibroepithelial polyps are rare proliferations involving the glans penis typically associated with chronic condom catheter usage. To the best of our knowledge, less than 20 cases have been reported in the literature with relatively similar clinical presentation. Herein, we report a case of lymphedematous fibroepithelial polyp not associated with condom usage in a 74-year-old man treated with surgical excision. On histopathological examination, the lesion displayed a hypocellular proliferation of spindled and stellate fibroblasts with intermixed Touton-like giant cells embedded w

Calcifying fibrous tumor of the ileum resected by single-port laparoscopic surgery: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Calcifying fibrous tumors (CFTs) are rare benign tumors. Because CFTs sometimes relapse, radical resection with adequate margins is necessary. We report a case of ileal CFT resected using single-port laparoscopic surgery. CASE PRESENTATION: A 33-year-old man presented with chief complaints of abdominal pain and vomiting. Computed tomography demonstrated a 45-mm-sized pelvic mass with partial calcification in the ileum. The patient was diagnosed with an ileal tumor, and partial resection of the ileum was performed using the single-port laparoscopic technique. Pathologic findings re

Reduced expression of programmed cell death 1 and programmed cell death ligand 1 in infiltrating inflammatory cells of lichen planus without administration of immune checkpoint inhibitors.

Keratinocytes are the main targets of infiltrating T cells in the pathogenesis of lichen planus. However, the mechanisms of dense inflammatory infiltrates beneath the epidermis remain unknown. The aim of the present study was to clarify the roles of programmed cell death 1 (PD-1) and its ligand (PD-L1) in the pathogenesis of lichen planus. Immunohistochemistry of PD-1 and PD-L1 in 12 cases each of lichen planus and dermal-type erythema multiforme was performed. The expression of PD-1 and PD-L1 on infiltrating inflammatory cells, predominantly lymphocytes in lichen planus, was significantly les

Calcifying fibrous tumor of the gastrointestinal tract: A clinicopathologic review and update.

Calcifying fibrous tumor (CFT) is a rare mesenchymal lesion that has been documented throughout the gastrointestinal tract. Gastrointestinal CFTs may occur at virtually any age, with a predilection for adults and for females. They occur most commonly in the stomach and the small and large intestines. CFTs are most often found incidentally, cured by local resection, and have a low risk of recurrence. Histology shows three characteristic features: Spindle cell proliferations within a densely hyalinized stroma, scattered calcifications, and lymphoplasmacytic inflammation. CFTs are immunoreactive

[About a case of calcifying fibrous tumor of the pleura].

Calcifying fibrous tumor is a rare soft tissue benign tumor (OMS 2002). Some pleural localisations are described, which affect slightly older individuals than the other soft tissue forms. The calcifying fibrous tumor is included in the 2004 World Health Organization classification of pleural tumors. A pleural tumor located in the right inferior pulmonary lobe is diagnosed in a 59-year-old man. This pleural tumor is macroscopically well-circumscribed. Histologically, the rare spindle tumoral cells are located between bundles of a collagenous tissue, sometimes hyalinized, with psammomatous or dy

Undetermined fibrous tumor with calcification in the cerebellopontine angle.

In this report, we introduce an undetermined fibrous tumor with calcification occurring in the cerebellopontine angle (CPA). A 51-year-old woman was admitted with a short history of dizziness. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance images revealed a 2×2×2 cm sized mass at the left CPA which was round and calcified. There was no dura or internal auditory canal involvement. At surgery, the tumor was located at the exit of 7th and 8th cranial nerve complex. It was very firm, bright yellow and well encapsulated. Histologic findings revealed that the tumor was predominantly composed of fibrous

Rosai-Dorfman disease and juvenile xanthogranuloma in a Thai boy: report of a case.

A 3-year-old Thai boy suffered from two histiocytoses, Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) and juvenile xanthogranuloma (JXG). The patient first presented with massive cervical lymphadenopathy at the age of one year. Biopsy revealed typical RDD; abnormally large CD68- and S-100 protein-positive histiocytes with occasional emperipolesis filled up the sinuses. Two years later, he developed polyuria and polydypsia. Skull film demonstrated osteolytic lesions at the occiput and left parietal region. Enlargement of the pituitary stalk was found on the magnetic resonance imaging. Despite the clinical impress
