The present study examined familial and individual variables in youngsters at high risk for suicide and non-suicidal youngsters. One hundred inpatient children and adolescents completed a battery of questionnaires including, FACES II, Family Strengths, and Problem Behavior Scales, to assess family dysfunction and individual behavior problems. The results indicated that suicidal youngsters have lower pride in their families and perceived them as less adaptable than non-suicidal youngsters as indicated by scores on the Family Strengths and FACES II, respectively. Scores on the Problem Behavior S

The City of North York Public Health Department (NYPHD) operates a school-based dental programme that provides preventive and treatment services to children according to evidence-based practice guidelines. This programme and private dental practices (PDP) represent the only sources of dental care for children in North York. The purpose of our study was to compare the oral health and family characteristics of clients from the NYPHD and PDP using a dental examination and a parent interview. Results showed that NYPHD and PDP clients had similar levels of fluorosis, calculus, and periodontal healt

The school adjustment problems and competencies of referred children with varying family background histories were compared. Children from homes characterized by low parent interest in education had more severe learning problems and fewer competencies than either matched referred controls without such a history or matched referred children under family pressure to succeed. The relationship of these findings to other studies of school adjustment and family background was considered.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The effective management of a child with cancer by their family depends on their coping strategies, the child's treatment outcomes, and their quality of life. For families of children with retinoblastoma, this study aims to use latent profile analysis to categorize family management patterns, understand their traits, explore influencing factors, and provide a theoretical basis for targeted interventions.
METHODS: From February to April 2024, a cross-sectional study was conducted with the parents of 608 children with retinoblastoma. These parents completed a survey assessin

Although research documents the demands of military life and the influence these demands can have on family life, little is known about military couples' patterns of family work and how these patterns are associated with their relational functioning. Grounded in the vulnerability stress adaptation model, this study addressed this gap by using a latent profile analysis with dyadic data from 228 United States military couples to identify groupings of couples with distinct patterns of family work, specifically, both partners' parenting work and emotion work. Four profiles emerged. They were disti

Cardiospondylocarpofacial syndrome (CSCFS) is an extremely rare autosomal dominant disorder resulting from variant in the MAP3K7 gene, which encodes the transforming growth factor-β-activated kinase 1 (TAK1). Only 26 cases of CSCFS have been reported worldwide. The main manifestations are growth retardation, hypotonia, dysmorphic facial features, skeletal and limb abnormalities, cardiac septal defects with valve dysplasia, cardiomyopathy, and deafness with inner ear malformations. In this study, we recruited an unrelated Chinese family with a patient diagnosed with CSCFS. Whole exome sequencin

BACKGROUND: Sibling sexual abuse (SSA) is influenced by and occurs within an interconnected family system, because of this there is a growing move towards recognising SSA as a family issue. Families also play a vital role in the disclosure of SSA and in the aftermath of recovery. Nevertheless, a descriptive review consolidating the known family dynamics, characteristics, and responses associated with SSA is absent from research.
OBJECTIVE: A scoping review was conducted to synthesise known family characteristics and dynamics associated with SSA. The review also sought to explore how families

INTRODUCTION: In the United States, substance addiction is a major contributing factor to incarceration of mothers and separation of children from their families. Five hundred Family Treatment Courts (FTC) operate across the country to combat the growing problem of women addicted to drugs. The FTC model provides mothers with substance addiction treatment, intensive judicial monitoring, repeated drug testing, counseling, incentives or sanctions, and case management with the goal of reaching long-term sobriety and reunification with their children.
DESIGN: This retrospective study examined the

INTRODUCTION: Medicaid family planning waivers can increase access to health care services and have been associated with lower rates of unintended pregnancy, which is associated with a higher risk of negative birth outcomes such as preterm birth and low birthweight. The objective of this study was to test the effect of Georgia's Medicaid family planning waiver, Planning for Healthy Babies (P4HB), on pregnancy characteristics and birth outcomes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) survey data in pre- (2008-2009) and two post-periods (2012-2013

Previous studies on family history of psoriasis showed that patients with a family history have an earlier onset of the disease, but such studies in Japan are still limited. To elucidate the characteristics of patients with familial psoriasis, we studied the family history of patients with psoriasis using the West Japan Psoriasis Registry, a multi-institutional registry operated by 26 facilities in the western part of Japan, including university hospitals, community hospitals, and clinics. This study enrolled 1847 patients registered between September 2019 and December 2021, with 199 (10.8%) h

Sociodemographic and psychosocial family factors have profound implications for adolescent development, identity formation and mental health during the adolescent years. We explored the associations of sociodemographic and psychosocial family factors with transgender identity in adolescence and the role of these factors in the associations between gender identity and emotional disorders. Data from a large adolescent population survey from Finland were analysed using logistic regression models. Reporting transgender identity was associated with mother's low level of education, accumulating fami

Background: Fatal familial insomnia (FFI) is a rare autosomal-dominant inherited prion disease characterized clinically by severe sleep disorder, motor signs, dysautonomia and abnormal behaviour. FFI is caused by a missense mutation at codon 178 of the prion protein gene (PRNP). Our study is aimed to explore typical clinical and genetic features of two Chinese pedigrees with FFI and review the related literatures. Methods: Two FFI cases with family histories were recruited in our study. The main clinical features, genetic features and possible pathophysiologic mechanisms of these two FFI cases

Children who commit family murder have been increasingly reported on in the South African media. Violence of this type has far-reaching consequences for families and communities. In this qualitative study, nine documented cases of children who committed family murder were analyzed to gain an in-depth understanding of the factors that contribute to children murdering family members. The personal and systemic reasons for these types of murders guided the research. The Interpersonal Parental Acceptance-Rejection Theory (IPARTheory) was used as theoretical framework. The researcher argues that the

BACKGROUND: Due to diverse findings as to the role of family factors for childhood cancer survival even within Europe, we explored a nationwide, register-based cohort of Danish children with hematological malignancies.
METHODS: All children born between 1973 and 2006 and diagnosed with a hematological malignancy before the age of 20 years (N = 1,819) were followed until 10 years from diagnosis. Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox proportional hazards models estimating hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were used to assess the impact of family characteristics on overall survival in c

Alopecia areata (AA) is a T-cell-mediated autoimmune disease resulting in partial or total noncicatricial hair loss. HLA class II antigens are the most important markers that constitute genetic predisposition to AA. Various life events and intense psychological stress may play an important role in triggering AA attacks. We report an unusual case series of 4 family members who had simultaneously occurring active AA lesions. Our aim was to evaluate the clinical and psychiatric features of 4 cases of active AA lesions occurring simultaneously in a family and determine HLA alleles. The clinical an

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic, impairing condition associated with high levels of family accommodation (i.e., participation in symptoms). Understanding of factors that may engender accommodation of pediatric OCD is limited. This study conducted exploratory analyses of parent-, child-, and family-level correlates of family accommodation, considering both behavioral and affective components of the response.
METHOD: The sample included 65 youths (mean age 12.3 years, 62% male) with OCD and their parents who completed a standardized assessment battery compo

Most descriptive studies on injection drug users (IDUs) has used treatment or referral samples. This study uses relatives ascertained through the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA) to describe patterns of drug use, psychiatric comorbidity, and selected high-risk behaviors among IDUs not ascertained through treatment or other referral networks. Relatives (N = 5,520) of alcoholic probands were administered a semistructured interview, the Semistructured Assessment for the Genetics of Alcoholism (SSAGA), which assesses lifetime psychiatric symptoms and psychoactive substance
