Family acceptance in adolescence and the health of LGBT young adults.

ISSUE: the role of family acceptance as a protective factor for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) adolescents and young adults has not been established. METHODS: a quantitative measure with items derived from prior qualitative work retrospectively assessed family accepting behaviors in response to LGBT adolescents' sexual orientation and gender expression and their relationship to mental health, substance abuse, and sexual risk in young adults (N= 245). FINDINGS: family acceptance predicts greater self-esteem, social support, and general health status; it also protects against d

Validation of My Family Health Portrait for six common heritable conditions.

PURPOSE: To assess the ability of My Family Health Portrait to accurately collect family history for six common heritable disorders. BACKGROUND: Family history is useful to assess disease risk but is not widely used. We compared the pedigree from My Family Health Portrait, an online tool for collection of family history, to a pedigree supplemented by a genetics professional. METHODS: One hundred fifty volunteers collected their family histories using My Family Health Portrait. A genetic counselor interviewed the volunteers to validate the entries and add diagnoses, as needed. The content and

The effects of child health on marital status and family structure.

The purpose of this paper is to provide evidence on the effect of child health on marital stability and family structure in an economic framework. We use the 1988 National Health Interview Survey's Child Health Supplement, with a sample of about 9,000 families, to test whether having an unhealthy child decreases the mother's chance of being married and whether it increases her chance of living in an extended family. Using two different measures of child health, we find that having an unhealthy child decreases the mother's likelihood of being married. Our results imply that children in poor hea

Coping profiles associated with psychiatric, physical health, work, and family problems.

Compares the coping profiles of 11 samples (total N = 1,298) of individuals experiencing psychiatric, physical health, work, or family problems. Comparisons are made in individuals with and without anxiety and depression to control for the effects of distress. Coping was similar for samples in similar problem categories but different for samples in different categories. Psychiatric patients made more use of avoidance and less use of social supports than individuals in the other categories. Samples with physical health problems were among the most frequent users of social supports. Individuals

Pregnancy outcome, health of children, and family adjustment after donor insemination.

We evaluated the pregnancies of 427 women who conceived through artificial insemination by donor (AID) at our clinic over a 12-year period. Initial phone contact was followed by a questionnaire. Outcome was known for 594 of the 606 pregnancies, with a total of 502 live-born children including 15 sets of twins. The spontaneous abortion rate was 16.5%, with no difference between fresh- and frozen-semen pregnancies. Significant correlations were found between spontaneous abortion rate and maternal age (P less than .001) and spontaneous abortion rate and cycle of conception (P less than .025). Fol

Depression and anxiety among Mexican Americans in a family health center.

A standardized interview including parts of the NIMH-Diagnostic Interview Schedule was used to determine the prevalence of depression (major depression or dysthymia) and generalized anxiety in a random sample of predominantly low-income Mexican American patients attending an inner-city family health center. Overall rates of current DSM-III-diagnosable depression and anxiety were similar to rates reported for other primary care patient populations in the United States. There were racial/ethnic and sex differences in the rates of these disorders, with Anglo females having disproportionately high

Family genetic designs in MoBa provide insights into health and functioning.

Genome-wide association studies using large, population-based samples of unrelated individuals have discovered thousands of genetic associations with health and disease1. These studies can help explain genetic and environmental risks. However, increasing evidence suggests that population-based estimates, while precise, can also reflect confounding that affects their use and interpretation. This confounding can be overcome using data from genotyped family members, such as nuclear mother-father-child trios2,3. However, samples of genotyped families are rare4-11. Here we illustrate some of the ad

International perspectives on implementation of system change in family mental health.

INTRODUCTION: Parental mental illness is a major public health issue across the globe with well-known intergenerational impacts on children. There is a wide body of evidence supporting the effectiveness of a range of interventions supporting families, however, their implementation has rarely been sustained across public health systems. Systemic change is an important part of workforce development and known to be crucial to embed and sustain practice, policy and structural initiatives in services for families. While much is known about the barriers to implementing family focused approaches with

The role of digitalization in health decisions: family and intergenerational perspective.

BACKGROUND: In a culture where health decisions are often made collectively rather than individually, how digitalization reshapes this process has not been sufficiently explored. The aim of this study is to reveal how family members experience digital health technologies in the context of family health decisions and how this experience is interpreted in terms of decision-making authority, trust and intergenerational interaction. METHOD: In this study, phenomenological design was used to reveal how individuals experience digital health applications in the context of family health decisions and

[Series: Concise Research. Relationship between Family Composition and Children's Oral Health].

Caries is one of the most common chronic diseases in children. Despite advice and guidelines, caries prevalence is alarmingly high in the Netherlands. Research suggests that family factors, such as family composition, may play a role in children's oral health. This study focused on the relationship between family composition and oral health in five-year-old children in the Netherlands. The central research question is, To what extent do family size and birth position influence the oral health of 5-year-old children in the Netherlands? This specifically examined whether family expansion affects

Association of COVID-19 stimulus receipt and spending with family health.

In this study, we aimed to determine the impact of U.S. government stimulus payments on family health during the COVID-19 pandemic. We hypothesized that receiving stimulus checks is associated with better family health and the effect of stimulus check receipt differs by income level. Additionally, we hypothesized that spending on immediate needs and paying off loans is associated with worse family health, and the effects of this spending differ by income level. Participants included 456 registered Amazon Mechanical Turk (mTurk) users, stratified by income, marital status, and parental status.

Raffinose Family Oligosaccharides: Friend or Foe for Human and Plant Health?

Raffinose family oligosaccharides (RFOs) are widespread across the plant kingdom, and their concentrations are related to the environment, genotype, and harvest time. RFOs are known to carry out many functions in plants and humans. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review of RFOs, including their beneficial and anti-nutritional properties. RFOs are considered anti-nutritional factors since they cause flatulence in humans and animals. Flatulence is the single most important factor that deters consumption and utilization of legumes in human and animal diets. In plants, RFOs have been rep

Understanding Mechanisms Driving Family Homeless Shelter Use and Child Mental Health.

Homeless shelters throughout the U.S. are overcrowded and under-resourced. Families with children face substantial barriers to timely, successful shelter exit, and prolonged shelter stays threaten child mental health. This community-based system dynamics study explored barriers to timely, successful shelter exit and feedback mechanisms driving length of stay and child mental health risk. Group model building - a participatory systems science tool - and key informant interviews were conducted with clients (N = 37) and staff (N = 6) in three family homeless shelters in a Midwestern region. Child Health in Elementary School Following California’s Paid Family Leave Program.

We evaluate changes in elementary school children health outcomes following the introduction of California’s Paid Family Leave (PFL) program, which provided parents with paid time off following the birth of a child. Our health outcomes--overweight, ADHD, and hearing-related problems--are characterized by diagnosis rates that only pick up during early elementary school. Moreover, our health outcomes have been found to be negatively linked with many potential implications of extended maternity leave--increased breastfeeding, prompt medical checkups at infancy, reduced prenatal stress, and reduce

Family history of stroke and cardiovascular health in a national cohort.

BACKGROUND: We investigated the association between family history of stroke (FHS) and Life's Simple 7 (LS7), a public health metric defined by the American Heart Association. METHODS: Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke is a national population-based cohort of 30,239 blacks and whites, aged 45 years or older, sampled from the US population between 2003 and 2007. Data were collected by telephone, mail questionnaires, and in-home examinations. FHS was defined as any first-degree relative with stroke. Levels of the LS7 components (total cholesterol, blood pressure, fasting g

Educational preparation for maternal, child and family health nurses in Australia.

AIM: The study aims to map and critique the current postgraduate educational nursing programmes offered to nurses and midwives in maternal, child and family health in Australia. BACKGROUND: Nursing specialties that focus on the early years of child health and development are based on international recognition of the developmental needs of the growing infant and of the social, health and economic consequences of failing to support families to raise their children in optimal environments. Little is known whether the educational programmes that prepare maternal, child and family health nurses (M

Family homelessness viewed through the lens of health and human rights.

Families with children, many of whom are headed by a single mother, are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population. Guided by Leininger's Culture Care Theory and the ethnonursing research method, the purpose of this study was to discover the care meanings and expressions for a group of 12 Appalachian mothers living with their children in an urban homeless shelter. Reflected in each mother's words and embedded within the 3 universal themes that emerged was the need to be treated with human dignity and respect. This need was seen as vital to the health and well being of these familie
