Phytochemical, Proximate, and Mineral Analysis of Male and Female Broussonetia luzonica Leaves.

Broussonetia luzonica, Family Moraceae, and locally called Himbabao, is a dioecious plant endemic to the Philippines. Despite extensive use of its flowers and young leaves as food, studies on Himbabao are limited, especially for the female species. In this study, the composition of both the male and female B. luzonica leaves was investigated through a proximate, mineral, and phytochemical analysis. The proximate analysis was done by standard methods of moisture, ash, protein, crude fiber, crude fat, and carbohydrate content determination. The mineral analysis was done by Inductively Coupled Pl

Hospital Safety for Women With Nicotine Addiction.

Hospital smoke-free policies are expanding to include all hospital-owned land and property. Because some women will choose to leave the hospital to satisfy nicotine cravings, smoke-free policies should account for this. Components of a policy can include a carefully designed smoking waiver form, nicotine substitution, smoking cessation education, behavioral counseling and supervised transport of women who choose to leave the hospital to smoke. Education of women and their families, awareness by all staff, and clearly defined guidelines can lead to improved safety.

Cognitive-behavioural outreach for an adolescent experiencing social anxiety, panic and agoraphobia: A single-case experimental design.

PROBLEM: Previous research suggests that the adult-focussed Clark and Wells (1995) model of social anxiety disorder (SAD) can be used to guide clinic-based treatment for adolescents. This single-case study (N = 1) investigated whether this model could also guide community-based outreach work for a 16-year-old female who was unable to attend clinic-based appointments due to social anxiety comorbid with panic and agoraphobia. METHODS: An experimental A-B-A design was used with three assessment-formulation sessions and 12 intervention sessions, focussing on exposure, cognitive restructuring, att

Practice Environment and Job Outcomes Among Primary Care Nurse Practitioners Caring for Patients With Dementia.

BACKGROUND: As the number of Americans living with dementia increases, healthcare delivery systems face increasing pressure to provide dementia-care services to improve patient and family outcomes. The primary care nurse practitioner (NP) workforce is critical to dementia care; however, many NPs practice in environments that lack organizational attributes needed to maximize their contributions. We examined the associations between the NP practice environment and key indicators of workforce sustainability-burnout, job satisfaction, and intent to leave. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: We conducted a

First-contact physiotherapists' perceived competency in a new model of care for low back pain patients: a mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: A new advanced practice model of care enables French physiotherapists to perform medical acts for low back pain (LBP) patients as first-contact physiotherapists (FCPs). OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to determine the self-perceived competency of FCPs and to further explore factors underpinning this feeling. METHODS: A mixed-methods explanatory sequential design was conducted. A survey was used to self-assess the perceived competency of FCPs in performing medical tasks. Semi-structured interviews were then performed to explore determining factors of perceived competency. Indu

Chemical composition of Ruellia paniculata essential oil and antioxidant and biological activities of its methanolic extract and hydrolate.

This study analysed the volatile compounds of Ruellia paniculata (Acanthaceae) from the North/Northwest Fluminense biome, Brazil. Essential oils were extracted from fresh and dried leaves by hydrodistillation and analysed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The volatile profile of fresh leaves was dominated by low molecular weight compounds, with (Z)-hex-3-en-1-ol as the major constituent. Dried leaves, in contrast, had a higher concentration of sesquiterpenes, particularly tau-cadinol. GC-MS analysis revealed significant differences in the chemical composition of the oils from

Nicotiana attenuata's capacity to interact with arbuscular mycorrhiza alters its competitive ability and elicits major changes in the leaf transcriptome.

To study the local and systemic effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) colonization, Nicotiana attenuata plants impaired in their interactions with AMF due to silencing of a calcium- and calmodulin dependent protein kinase (inverted repreat (ir)CCaMK) were grown competitively in pairs with empty vector (EV) plants, with and without two different types of inoculum. When inoculated, EV plants strongly outperformed irCCaMK plants. Foliar transcript profiling revealed that AMF colonization significantly changed gene expression of P-starvation and -transporter genes in irCCaMK plants. The P

Identification of domains and measures for assessment battery to examine well-being of spouses of OIF/OEF veterans with PTSD.

Family members play an important role in the physical and mental recovery of soldiers returning from Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been associated with strained marital and family relations and parenting difficulties, and many veterans with PTSD experience difficulty finding and maintaining employment. Family members who assist with the veteran's recovery also experience significant strain and may have to leave employment to care for the veteran. Our objective was to identify appropriate assessment measures for exam

Overview: the "wife-beater's wife" reconsidered.

Although not a new phenomenon, wife-beating has been largely ignored by mental health professionals. The author describes a context in which the physical abuse of women as wives can be understood and suggests alternative theoretical constructs to traditional theories of masochism as explanations of why women stay in violent marital relationships. She discusses the societal attitudes that normalize the use of family violence as well as attitudes about women, men, and sex roles that leave women vulnerable to assault; summarizes the research on abused wives; identifies a specific stress response

Localization, conjugation, and function of salicylic acid in tobacco during the hypersensitive reaction to tobacco mosaic virus.

Salicylic acid (SA) is hypothesized to be a natural signal that triggers the systemic induction of pathogenesis-related proteins and disease resistance in tobacco. When Xanthi-nc (NN genotype) tobacco was inoculated with tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) there was an increase in endogenous SA in both inoculated and virus-free leaves. The highest levels of SA were detected in and around necrotic lesions that formed in response to TMV. Chemical and enzymatic hydrolysis of extracts from TMV-inoculated leaves demonstrated the presence of a SA conjugate tentatively identified as O-beta-D-glucosyl-SA. The

Does administrative support negate the consequences of nurse abuse?

AIM: To assess the relationship between disruptive/abusive situations and the 'intention to leave' nursing. BACKGROUND: While every nurse deserves to feel safe in his or her working environment, nurse abuse remains a common occurrence worldwide. Only when hospitals are safe, is retention enhanced and patient care improved. METHOD: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 1053 nurses. RESULTS: Almost 70% of nurses experienced stressful disruptive/abusive situations that were mainly caused by patients/families. The majority felt skilled in dealing with these situations, yet around 40% cons

Cancer support groups: the state of the art.

Support groups serve a large number of people with cancer, and their family members. Their popularity is grounded in the fact that the existing cancer treatment network continues to leave a gap of unmet psychosocial needs. These unmet needs can often be alleviated by mutual aid provided by people who share a common experience. Mutual aid complements professional help by adding a dimension of support that is best provided by other members of the group in need. Themes of discussion in support groups include the emotional impact of illness, the meaning of illness, family difficulty, problems of i
