Familial associations of rheumatoid arthritis with autoimmune diseases and related conditions.

OBJECTIVE: In the era of genome-wide association studies, familial risks are used to estimate disease heritability and the likelihood of candidate-gene identification. This study was undertaken to estimate associations of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) with any of 33 autoimmune diseases and related conditions among parents and offspring, singleton siblings, twins, and spouses. METHODS: The Multigeneration Register in Sweden was used as a reliable source of information on Swedish families throughout the last century. Data on autoimmune diseases in individual family members were obtained through lin

[Cloning of Rcet3, a novel gene related to family 2 cystatins].

OBJECTIVE: To clone the full-length Rcet3 gene, a novel gene related to family 2 cystatins, from mouse testis or other tissues. METHODS: Rcet3 gene was cloned using digital differential display (DDD) and RT-PCR was performed for cloning the full-length Rcet3 gene from adult mouse testis cDNA library with sequence analysis. RESULTS: Rcet3 cDNA was 610 bp in length, consisting of 4 exons to encode a protein with 140 amino acid residues. The encoded protein contained a potential signal peptide and a cystatin domain, but lacked critical consensus site important for cysteine protease inhibition.

Meningioma and schwannoma risk in adults in relation to family history of cancer.

Relatively little is known about factors that contribute to the development of meningioma and vestibular schwannoma, two intracranial nervous system tumors. We evaluated the risk of these tumors in relation to family history of malignant or benign tumors. Incident cases of meningioma (n = 197) or schwannoma (n = 96) were identified at three U. S. referral hospitals between June 1994 and August 1998. Controls (n = 799) admitted to the same hospitals for nonmalignant conditions were matched to cases on age, sex, race/ethnicity, hospital, and proximity of residence to hospital. We found that risk

Behavioral, cognitive, and family therapy for obsessive-compulsive and related disorders.

Behavioral therapy and cognitive therapy, individually and combined, are a solid base in any therapy, the goal of which is to decrease the maladaptive behaviors associated with obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders. Future research into this area involves two branches: (1) better resolution in what components of current treatments are effective and (2) a better understanding of the cause of OCD. The therapies of choice are behavioral therapy and cognitive therapy, but often what is described as behavioral therapy and cognitive therapy varies. Further refinement of the specific components of

Affective, organizational, and relational characteristics of maltreating families: a systems perspective.

In-home structured interactions of 42 maltreating families (neglect: n = 12; physical abuse: n = 19; sexual abuse: n = 11) and 23 low-income comparison families with preschool-aged children were examined to determine whether maltreating and nonmaltreating families could be distinguished by system-level processes. Coding from videotapes of family interactions yielded ratings for affective, organizational, and relational features of each family unit. Results from family coding demonstrated that sexually abusive families had significantly more difficulties regulating anger, evidenced more chaos a

A study of three cases of familial related agenesis of the corpus callosum.

This paper provides data on a family in which three members, all female, have been diagnosed as having agenesis of the corpus callosum. That all three acallosal individuals came from the same family and showed relatively uniform neuropsychological impairment and could be compared in similar terms with their "callosal" siblings, also female, provides a unique sample. Inter-hemispheric transfer, psychometric measures, and motor and cognitive function were examined in the acallosal individuals, all of whom had borderline to low-average intelligence, with results compared to their non-acallosal si

Oesophageal atresia, related malformations, and medical problems: a family study.

Oesophageal atresia (OA) and tracheo-oesophageal fistula (TOF) are life-threatening malformations of generally undefined cause. Previous reports of familial cases suggest a genetic contribution. The pattern of inheritance appears non-Mendelian, i.e., multifactorial. Individuals with OA/TOF often have other malformations and medical problems. The aim of this study was to determine the association in OA/TOF cases and healthy control subjects of associated malformations, midline defects, and medical conditions. We also investigate the relationships of these conditions in the relatives of the case

Family decision making about living related kidney donation.

Little information is available on how families make decisions about living related kidney donation. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to explore the family decision making process in identifying and selecting a living related kidney donor, to identify factors that assist or inhibit the decision making, and to explore issues and concerns raised by families about the experience. The qualitative method of grounded theory was used. Ten recipients, their living related donors, and their family members were interviewed individually and as a group prior to and after the transplant. Four deci

[Familial relations in connection with donor insemination. Psychological effects of secretiveness].

In Norway approximately 150 children are born every year as a result of artificial insemination. In 1987 an Act was passed regulating this practice. Hospital gynaecologists are given the authority to implement this Act, and the responsibility for doing so. With the current practice of artificial insemination, two types of secrets evolve: The anonymity of the donor, as required by law, will prevent the child from ever identifying its biological father. The secrecy of conception, as recommended by experienced gynaecologists as the best method of protecting the child and the parents, will continu

The relation of stress and family environment to atopic dermatitis symptoms in children.

The relation of stress and family environment to symptom severity in children with atopic dermatitis (AD) was examined. Forty-four children with severe AD and their families completed questionnaires measuring life events, chronic everyday problems and family environment. Measures of symptom severity were collected during medical evaluation and included an estimate of body surface affected by AD, course of AD symptoms over time, medication usage, and scratching intensity during the day and night. Regression analyses indicated that the measures of stress and family environment were important pre

A qualitative study of perceptions related to family risk of bipolar disorder among patients and family members from India.

BACKGROUND: Over the past decade there have been rapid advances in psychiatry genetics and there is a growing concern about the clinical and practical relevance of this knowledge. Efforts are being made to know the perspectives of patients and family members regarding family risk and genetic counselling. However, the area remains largely unexplored in psychiatric research from Asian countries. AIM: The primary purpose of the study was to explore the perceptions related to family risk among Indian patients with bipolar disorder and their family members. The study also aimed to explore the rela

Biological and small molecule strategies in migraine therapy with relation to the calcitonin gene-related peptide family of peptides.

Migraine is one of the most common of neurological disorders with a global prevalence of up to 15%. One in five migraineurs have frequent episodic or chronic migraine requiring prophylactic treatment. In recent years, specific pharmacological treatments targeting calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) signalling molecules have provided safe and effective treatments, monoclonal antibodies for prophylaxis and gepants for acute therapy. Albeit beneficial, it is important to understand the molecular mechanisms of these new drugs to better understand migraine pathophysiology and improve therapy. He

Family is all that matters: Prospective associations between structure, function, and quality of social relations and self-rated health in the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP).

We prospectively examined the association between structure, function, and quality of social relations and self-rated health (SRH) in U.S. adults followed over 10 years in the population-based National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP). Large social network and high positive/negative social support were measured at baseline and defined as the highest quartile. These three binary measures were reported from friends, family, and partner and combined into a multifactorial exposure variable. SRH was measured through a 5-point Likert scale and dichotomised. Odds ratios (OR) for poor SR

[Contact behavior of elderly females living alone from the social psychologic viewpoint--an exploratory study. II: Social contact with children (close relations) and with other relatives (siblings, extended family)].

After a theoretical introduction, the authors present the results of an exploratory study on the social contacts between older women living alone and their children and other relatives, respectively. It seems to be of special importance for future examinations not to confine oneself to recording the quality and the quantity of such contacts. The necessity of a description of the social contacts in substance in the individual fields of contact is pointed out.

Extensive pregnancy-related off-treatment time in women with familial hypercholesterolaemia.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Women with familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) lose substantial treatment time during their reproductive years as most lipid-lowering therapies are contraindicated from the preconception through the end of breastfeeding. We examined the duration of real-life pregnancy-related off-treatment time in 27 women with FH in Norway. METHODS: Women with FH in Norway who had completed the ongoing FH-FEMINA study (ClinicalTrials.gov ID NCT05367310) were included. Women were followed from 36th week of gestation and until one year after delivery or until end of breastfeeding. Informat
