Father- and Mother-Child Reminiscing About Past Pain and Young Children's Cognitive Skills.

Objective Painful experiences are common, distressing, and salient in childhood. Parent-child reminiscing about past painful experiences is an untapped opportunity to process pain-related distress and, similar to reminiscing about other distressing experiences, promotes children's broader development. Previous research has documented the role of parent-child reminiscing about past pain in children's pain-related cognitions (i.e., memories for pain), but no study to date has examined the association between parent-child reminiscing about past painful experiences and children's broader cognitive

The role of perceived parental rearing practices in the aetiology of phobic disorders: a controlled study.

The perceived parental rearing practices and attitudes of social phobics, agoraphobics, height phobics and non-patient normal controls were investigated, employing the EMBU, an inventory for assessing memories of upbringing. Findings revealed that, as compared with the controls, social phobics and height phobics scored both parents not only as lacking in emotional warmth, but also as having been rejective and overprotective. Agoraphobics reported both parents as having lacked emotional warmth, but only their mothers as being rejecting. Interestingly, the perception of negative rearing practice

Fathering in a Pandemic: Low-Income Black Fathers' Experiences and Mental Health Stressors.

COVID-19 interventions disrupted family life, disproportionately affecting low-income Black fathers. Although family relationships are critical aspects of men's mental health and overall well-being, studies examining the effect of the pandemic from a Black fathering lens are sparse. This study explored Black fathers' experiences and adaptive responses to fathering during the pandemic, highlighting mental health consequences of their experience. Data was collected through interviews with Black fathers participating in a fatherhood-focused program in a Midwestern U.S. urban area. The average age

A literature review and meta-ethnography of fathers' psychological health and received social support during unpredictable complicated childbirths.

BACKGROUND: Fathers' attendance during pregnancy and childbirth has increased in recent decades. During childbirth, complications may occur that may put the woman and/or child in danger. To experience such situations may be traumatic for the father, as well as may increase his risk of childbirth-related mental illness during the postpartum period. AIM: The aim of this literature review was to describe expectant fathers' experiences of complications during childbirth. METHOD: We undertook a systematic literature review and meta-ethnography, where 10 articles were included. The search was cond

Sex before the State: Civic Sex, Reproductive Innovations, and Gendered Parental Identity.

Certain changes in the way that states classify people by sex as well as certain reproductive innovations undercut the rationale for state identification of people as male or female in signifying gendered parental relationships to children. At present, people known to the state as men may be genetic mothers to their children; people known to the state as women may be genetic fathers to their children. Synthetic gametes would make it possible for transgender men to be genetically related to children as fathers and transgender women to be genetically related to children as mothers, even if they

Fatherhood, Behavioral Health, and Criminal Legal System Contact over the Life Course.

Life course theories suggest that fathers' lifetime criminal legal system contact could contribute to poor parent-child outcomes via deterioration in couple relationship quality and fathers' behavioral health. Using paired, longitudinal data from the Multi-site Family Study (N = 1,112 couples), the current study examines the influence of three dimensions of fathers' life course legal system contact on individual and parent-child outcomes. In fitted models, accumulated system contact in adulthood predicts fathers' later depressive symptoms and drug misuse, which in turn predict diminished fathe

Childhood cancer and occupational radiation exposure in parents.

To test the hypothesis that a parent's job exposure to radiation affects his or her child's risk of cancer, the authors compared this exposure during the year before the child's birth for parents of children with and without cancer. Parents of children with cancer were no more likely to have worked in occupations, industries, or combined occupations and industries with potential ionizing radiation exposure. Bone cancer and Wilms' tumor occurred more frequently among children of fathers in all industries with moderate potential ionizing radiation exposure. Children with cancer more often had fa

Neurobehavior disinhibition in childhood predisposes boys to substance use disorder by young adulthood: direct and mediated etiologic pathways.

OBJECTIVE: The development of substance use disorder (SUD) was prospectively investigated in 66 boys having fathers with SUD and 104 boys having fathers with no adult Axis I or II psychiatric disorder. Evaluations were conducted to determine the context in which neurobehavior disinhibition in relation to parental SUD, parental neglect of the child and child's social maladjustment culminated in a DSM-III-R diagnosis of SUD. METHODS: A neurobehavior disinhibition latent trait was derived using indicators of behavior undercontrol, affect dysregulation and executive cognitive functioning in the b

Strengthening Parental Identity of Incarcerated Fathers through Innovative Practices of Drama in Education.

This paper focuses on an innovative research initiative conducted within a Greek Detention Center. The project explores the paternal identity of incarcerated fathers with the primary objective of reinforcing their parental attitudes, skills, and practices. Despite the challenges imposed by incarceration, it is widely acknowledged that individuals can, and indeed should, continue to exercise their parental roles. This serves as the central premise of our research. A Detention Center in Greece was carefully selected through a process of feasibility sampling for this study, encompassing a partici

Paternal perinatal depression: cases.

For many years there has been a debate among psychiatrists as to whether and how the patient's gender modifies the psychopathological picture of depression. Despite many years of research on trigger mechanisms, clinical features and the consequences of perinatal depression in women, one can still get the impression that too little is known about this mental disorder in the perinatal period in women. As for men, there are only few reports showing the consequences of paternal depression for the physical and emotional development of a newborn child. The article describes several cases of male pat

The father's attachment to the fetus and related factors in late pregnancy: a longitudinal study using a path analysis model.

BACKGROUND: It is important for fathers to develop attachment to the fetus during pregnancy because paternal attachment to the fetus during pregnancy affects attachment to the child after birth. A continuum of paternal attachment exists from early to late pregnancy. However, few studies have longitudinally investigated the development of paternal attachment to the fetus during pregnancy. This study aimed to explore longitudinally factors related to the father’s attachment to the fetus in late pregnancy. METHODS: A longitudinal study was conducted using an anonymous self-administered questionna

From prenatal economic pressure to child problem behavior at age 6: An examination of the longitudinal family stress model and the role of social support in two-parent families.

The family stress model outlines that parents' economic pressure can lead to a cascade of family stress processes, which in turn can lead to child internalizing and externalizing behavior. In the current preregistered study, we investigated to what extent the relation between prenatal economic pressure and child internalizing and externalizing behavior at child age 6 can be explained through the sequential mediating processes of parents' psychological distress and harsh parenting at child age 3. In our models, we accounted for the influence of both mothers and fathers. We also tested the moder

Stress and well-being among parents of children with rare diseases: a prospective intervention study.

AIM: This paper reports a study to assess stress, well-being and supportive resources experienced by mothers and fathers of children with rare disabilities, and how these variables were affected by an intensive family competence intervention. BACKGROUND: Despite diagnosis-specific studies, little overall knowledge exists about life-consequences for families of children with rare disorders. METHOD: We used a prospective design with baseline data and two follow-ups (at 6 and 12 months) after an intervention. The intervention aimed at empowering parents in managing their child's disability. Par

The relationship of violent fathers, posttraumatically stressed mothers and symptomatic children in a preschool-age inner-city pediatrics clinic sample.

This study aims to understand if greater severity of maternal posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), related to maternal report of interpersonal violence, mediates the effects of such violence on (a) child PTSS as well as on (b) child externalizing and internalizing symptoms. Study participants were mothers (N = 77) and children 18 to 48 months recruited from community pediatric clinics. Data were analyzed continuously via bivariate correlations and then multiple linear regression. Post hoc Sobel tests were performed to confirm mediation. Paternal violence accounted for 15% of the variance of c

Father and mother harsh parenting and adult romantic relationships over time: Individual behavior during adolescence.

The present study examined how father and mother harsh parenting as experienced in middle adolescence impacted individual behavior during late adolescence and subsequent harsh couple interaction with their romantic partner in adulthood using a prospective longitudinal design (n = 117 males, 239 females). Data were collected during home visits by a trained interviewer in which family members completed questionnaires and participated in videotaped structured interaction tasks that were coded by trained observers. We assessed the influence of harsh parenting in adolescence (ages 15 and 16, Time 1

An analysis of avoidant and approach coping as mediators of the relationship between paternal and maternal attachment security and outcomes in child victims of sexual abuse.

OBJECTIVE: Prior studies have documented the potential role of nonoffending parent support in promoting recovery of adult survivors following sexual abuse (SA). However, few studies have distinguished the maternal and paternal role and the mechanisms by which quality of the parent-child relationship might foster more positive outcomes in child victims. The purpose of this study was to examine coping strategies as mediators of the link between mother-child and father-child relationship and outcomes following child SA. METHOD: A sample of 505 children (339 girls and 166 boys) ages 6-13 years co
