[Invisible fathers: child development and family dynamics after heterologous insemination].

This study presents the long term outcome of the psychotherapy of a girl over seven years, which was born after donor insemination (DI) and aged eight became ill with a compulsive disorder. Aspects of child development, communication within the family and family dynamics related to this specific constellation are pointed out. This case-study presents one of the very few supplements to statistic data elaborated about assitsed-reproduction-families. Implications for individual therapy and therapeutic management of the family are discussed according to development of bonding and identity of the D

Including expectant fathers in antenatal education programmes in Istanbul, Turkey.

In this article we present the results of three studies investigating methods for including men in antenatal education in Istanbul, Turkey. Participants were first-time expectant parents living in low and middle-income areas. After a formative study on the roles of various family members in health during the period surrounding a first birth, an antenatal-clinic-based education programme for women and for couples was carried out as a randomised, controlled study. Based on the results, separate community-based antenatal education programmes for expectant mothers and expectant fathers were tested

Abnormal sperm morphology and function in the fathers of hypospadiacs.

A lower motility of spermatozoa and a higher incidence of abnormal sperm morphology were found in 25 fathers of hypospadiacs compared with those of 50 fathers who produced children who were not hypospadiacs. Subfertility of fathers may result in a higher risk of hypospadias in offspring and as subfertile males now represent a higher proportion among fathers, owing to the improved efficacy of infertility treatment, this may explain the increased occurrence of hypospadias. Our relaxed-selection hypothesis, which states that there is a redistribution in the number of children born to fertile and

Fathers' experiences singing to their infants: an interpretative phenomenological analysis.

BACKGROUND: Infant-directed singing (ID singing) is a powerful phenomenon with well-established clinical applications for infants and parents. Existing research, however, focuses primarily on mothers, leaving a critical gap in the literature. METHODS: This study explores fathers' experiences singing with their infants, specifically examining how fathers engage in and perceive singing to their infant; the factors that influence fathers' singing; and how, if at all, singing influences father-infant bonding. Semi-structured interviews with thirteen fathers were analyzed using Interpretative Phen

Vascular health of fathers with history of intracytoplasmic sperm injection.

OBJECTIVE: Studies suggest that men who undergo assisted reproductive technologies (ART) may have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease; however, limited data on this matter is available. This observational pilot study aimed to investigate the overall vascular health of fathers with history of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) compared to fathers whose partners conceived spontaneously. METHODS: Diet quality, physical activity, sedentary behavior as well as overall vascular function including the assessment of pulse wave analysis, intima-media thickness (cIMT), arterial stiffness of th

Correlates of Incarceration of Fathers, Socioeconomic Influences, and Mental Illness.

The United States leads globally in incarceration. Incarceration can disrupt families in both immediate and long-term ways, including finances and mental illness. We examined the relationship between father incarceration during adolescence and the development of mental illness in adulthood as well as the relationship of household assets and debts in relation to the mental illness outcomes. Wave IV data of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health were used with a final analytic sample of 2129 participants. Data were analyzed using MANOVA in Stata 13.1. The findings indicate

Predicting coparenting quality in daily life in mothers and fathers.

The purpose of the current study was to examine contextual (daily relationship quality, daily stressors, daily work hours), parent (daily negative emotions, gender), and child factors (daily child-induced parenting stress) as predictors of mothers' and fathers' perceptions of daily coparenting quality. Mothers and fathers from 174 families completed a 14-day diary study. Utilizing multilevel modeling, our results suggest that daily coparenting is multidetermined. Indeed, daily fluctuations in coparenting were predicted by similar daily fluctuations in couple relationship quality, parent negati

Microcephaly and family dynamics: fathers' perceptions of their children's disability.

The family is a key pillar in an individual's psychological life, influencing behavior patterns, feelings of social belonging, and emotional health. The family structure can be shaken by the arrival of an infant with microcephaly associated with the Zika virus, defined in newborn boys as head circumference less than or equal to 31.9cm and in newborn girls as less than or equal to 31.5cm. The study analyzes the impact of an infant's diagnosis of microcephaly on the paternal function. Interviews were held with five fathers of children with microcephaly from three communities in rural Paraíba Sta

"Fathers' rights" and the defense of paternal authority in Australia.

Feminism's achievements regarding violence against women are a key target for the fathers' rights movement. This article provides an overview of the impact of the fathers' rights movement on men's violence against women. It documents the ways in which fathers' rights groups in Australia have influenced changes in family law, which privilege parental contact over safety, particularly through moves toward a presumption of children's joint residence. They have attempted to discredit female victims of violence, to wind back the legal protections available to victims and the sanctions imposed on pe

Possible pitfalls in motherless paternity analysis with related putative fathers.

Nowadays, more and more paternity cases are carried out investigating only child and putative father, mostly for economical or private reasons. Usually, reliable results can be obtained and the putative father can be included or ruled out with a high certainty. Considerable problems might arise when a relative of the biological father is investigated as being the putative father. In this study, we investigated 164 persons from 27 families creating artificial deficiency cases using the AmpFlSTRIdentifiler kit, which amplifies 15 STRs simultaneously. We analyzed 93 child/biological father pairs

Dental abnormalities in children of fathers with substance use disorders.

Very little is known about whether parental substance-use disorders (SUDs) affect the prevalence of dental abnormalities among their offspring. This study examined the prevalence of various dental abnormalities in sons of fathers with SUDs (the high average risk, or HAR, group) versus the prevalence of these abnormalities among sons of fathers without SUDs (the low average risk, or LAR, group). A total of 385 sons and their families were comprehensively assessed at five different ages, 10-12, 12-14, 16, 19, and 22. All of these participants were participating in an ongoing longitudinal NIDA-fu

Fathers' experience of parenting a child with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

The author examined the experience of fathers who have a child with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA). He used grounded theory methodology, in which 22 fathers participated in semistructured interviews, and developed a substantive theory of fathers' experience that addresses the impact of their child's JRA, their adaptational responses, and the meanings they associated with their experiences. Fathers were profoundly affected, perceived their child's condition as a catalyst for meaningful involvement, experienced many emotions, and sought to adopt a positive approach to making sense of their

Migrant fathers and their attitudes to potential male hormonal contraceptives.

The purpose of this study was to assess potential uptake of male hormonal contraception (MHC) in migrant fathers in a post-partum setting, and to compare them to Australian-born fathers. It was a cross-sectional study of a convenience sample from the post-natal ward of a tertiary level obstetric hospital. Seventy-six English-speaking fathers born in South-East Asia or on the Indian subcontinent were surveyed and their responses compared with those provided by 118 Australian-born participants from a previous study. The main outcome measures were acceptability of potential male hormonal contrace
