Severe fat embolism in perioperative abdominal liposuction and fat grafting.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Fat embolism syndrome may occur in patients suffering from multiple trauma (long bone fractures) or plastic surgery (liposuction), compromising the circulatory, respiratory and/or central nervous systems. This report shows the evolution of severe fat embolism syndrome after liposuction and fat grafting. CASE REPORT: SSS, 42 years old, ASA 1, no risk factors for thrombosis, candidate for abdominal liposuction and breast implant prosthesis. Subjected to balanced general anesthesia with basic monitoring and controlled ventilation. After 45min of procedure, there was a

Fighting fat with fat: the expanding field of adipose stem cells.

We are in the midst of a dire, unprecedented, and global epidemic of obesity and secondary sequelae, most prominently diabetes and hyperlipidemia. Underlying this epidemic is the most hated of cells, adipocytes, and their inherent dynamic ability to expand and renew. This capacity highlights a heretofore undefined stem compartment. Recent in vivo studies, relying upon lineage tracing and flow cytometry methods, have begun to unravel the identity of adipose stem cells, their niche, and the dynamism central to adipose expansion. Thus, the field is moving in a direction that may allow us to manip

Fat embolism secondary to yellow fat disease in an Appaloosa horse.

A 4-year-old female Appaloosa horse was referred to the Department of Comparative Pathology, Veterinary Faculty, with a history of colic and acute respiratory distress. At necropsy, gross lesions consisted of extensive firm, multinodular, hemorrhagic foci in fat tissues with yellow-brown discoloration. The most affected areas were peritoneal fat and perirenal, epicardial, and subcutaneous adipose tissues. Other findings were hepatic lipidosis and multiple 1-1.5 cm hemorrhagic foci scattered in both lungs. Histopathological examination revealed severe degeneration and necrosis of adipose tissue

The impact of mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists on fat mass and fat metabolism.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity is a chronic, multifactorial condition which is a global health challenge. In general, obesity is defined by excessive fat accumulation and associated with the risk of numerous conditions, including type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), cardiovascular disease, heart failure, and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, and some types of cancer contributing to increased morbidity and mortality. Mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs) are used for a long time for management of cardiovascular disease and non-steroidal MRAs also showed kidney protection. Apa

Fat vs. Sugar: The Case for a Saturated Fat Tax in Italy.

When judging the distributional impact of unhealthy food taxes, what matters is not just how much low income people would pay but how much the such taxes would benefit or harm them overall. In this paper, we assess the consumer welfare impact of a fat tax net of its expected benefits computed as savings from weight loss. Using Italian data, we estimate a censored Exact Affine Stone Index (EASI) incomplete demand system for food groups, simulating changes in purchases, calorie intake, consumer welfare, and the monetary value of short-run health benefits. While the Italian government has propose

Transconjunctival Fat Repositioning Blepharoplasty: Is Excess Fat Herniation a Prerequisite?

BACKGROUND: The fat repositioning technique has been widely used for the treatment of tear trough deformity, and there is a strong belief that excess fat herniation is a prerequisite for the procedure. The purpose of this study was to evaluate its effect in patients with minimal or no excess fat herniation. METHODS: A total of 232 patients underwent the procedure and met the inclusion criteria. Of them, 198 were primary cases, and 34 had a hisory of fat removal for blepharoplasty. The amount of infraorbital fat was evaluated preoperatively by palpation. Release of the tear trough ligament and

Buccal Fat Pad Reduction With Intraoperative Fat Transfer to the Temple.

There is now a growing trend for buccal fat pad reduction in patients who desire a decrease in midface and lower face volume, refinement, sculpting, or enhancement of facial features. The buccal fat pad is connected to the temporal fat, and therefore buccal fat pad reduction can result in volume depletion of the temporal fossae. In addition, most patients undergoing this procedure already have pre-existing temporal volume depletion due to aging. We describe a technique in which we remove part of the buccal fat pad and transfer the fat to the temple to achieve aesthetically pleasing facial cont

Fat preference and fat intake in individuals with and without anorexia nervosa.

Fat restriction is a characteristic eating behavior among individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN), and laboratory meal studies demonstrate restricted fat intake among low-weight patients. The Geiselman Food Preference Questionnaire-I© (FPQ) is a validated self-report measure that yields a fat preference score (FPS). Prior research reported that patients with AN had a significantly lower FPS than did healthy control (HC) participants. The goal of the current study was to compare self-reported fat preference (FPS) to fat intake (multi-item meal (MIM) study) in low-weight ANs and HCs. Specific aim

Comparison of fat tissues used in intracordal autologous fat injection.

CONCLUSIONS: The buccal fat pad appears to be more useful as a source of fat tissues in intracordal fat injection than the abdominal fat tissues used previously. However, further studies are required to confirm this point. OBJECTIVES: Fat tissues used in vocal fold augmentation surgery have primarily been harvested from the subcutaneous region of the lower abdomen. It is often difficult to obtain sufficient fat tissue for injection due to the physical features of the individual patient. We have thus adopted a method using fat tissue from the buccal fat pad, which is already used in other plas

Low-fat and fat-free pleomorphic lipomas: a diagnostic challenge.

Pleomorphic lipomas are benign tumors that most commonly present as subcutaneous masses in the head and neck, shoulder, or back region of middle-aged to elderly men. They are related to spindle cell lipomas based on shared cytogenetic aberrations and histologic features. When little or no fat is present, the diagnosis can be challenging. A review of 38 pleomorphic lipomas seen in consultation revealed 7 cases in which fat was present in reduced (<5%) amounts (n = 5) or absent (n = 2). Six of 7 cases were from men with a mean age of 59 years. Excluding 1 case where the site was not specified, t

The role of nutrition in fat deposition and fat atrophy in patients with HIV.

HIV-associated body shape changes and metabolic abnormalities, called HIV-associated lipodystrophy, are being seen with increased frequency. These issues may be associated with an increased risk of other diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, or with poor adherence to antiretroviral medications. Diet may be useful in the prevention and treatment of lipodystrophy and is a cost-effective and non-toxic intervention. At present, there are limited data on nutrition and HIV-related body shape changes. The purpose of this article is to review the roles that diet may play in the development and tre

The lumbrical fat graft: a replacement for lost upper eyelid fat.

Human eyelids seem to age earlier and more rapidly than do other regions of the face, making blepharoplasty (either age or familially indicated) an operation often performed earlier than other remedial procedures for facial aging. The traditional and more doctrinaire approach to upper blepharoplasty in which fat and orbicularis muscle are excised has led to a type of iatrogenia that often leaves the upper (and lower) eyelids hollowed and vacant, before their time. The notion of upper blepharoplasty as a simple operation is, therefore, to be questioned. The idea of normal and obligatory asymmet

High-fat and low-fat (behavioural) phenotypes: biology or environment?

It is now widely accepted that obesity develops by way of genetic mechanisms conferring specific dispositions which interact with strong environmental pressures. It is also accepted that certain dispositions constitute metabolic risk factors for weight gain. It is less well accepted that certain patterns of behaviour (arising from biological demands or environmental influences) put individuals at risk of developing a positive energy balance and weight gain (behavioural risk factors). Relevant patterns of behaviour include long-lasting habits for selecting and eating particular types of foods.

Effect of different dietary fats on inflammation and glucose intolerance in high fructose and high fat fed experimental animals.

OBJECTIVES: Diet is the major modifiable risk factor for the onset of insulin resistance and its progression into diabetes. In the present study the effect of various dietary fats on inflammatory homeostasis and glucose tolerance is investigated in high fat and high fructose fed mice model. METHODS: C57/BL6J mice were divided into four groups and fed a casein-based diet containing high fructose (45%) and high fat (24%) (clarified butter oil [CBO]; safflower oil [SFFO] and lard oil [LO]) for 120 days; oral glucose tolerance (OGTT), plasma lipid profile and plasma & adipose tissue cytokines lev

Microwave-Assisted Saponification Method Followed by Solid-Phase Extraction for the Characterization of Sterols and Dialkyl Ketones in Fats.

Unlike other fields, the methods routinely applied for fats and oils are still tied to traditional, time- and solvent-consuming procedures, such as saponification, column chromatography and thin-layer chromatography. In this paper, microwave-assisted saponification followed by a lab-made solid-phase extraction was optimized for the characterization of either dialkyl ketones (DAK) or sterols or both simultaneously. The instrumental determination was performed by gas chromatography- flame ionization detector (GC-FID) for quantification and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for confirm

Healing fats of the skin: the structural and immunologic roles of the omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids.

Linoleic acid (18:2omega6) and alpha-linolenic acid (18:3omega3) represent the parent fats of the two main classes of polyunsaturated fatty acids: the omega-6 (n-6) and the omega-3 (n-3) fatty acids, respectively. Linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid both give rise to other long-chain fatty acid derivatives, including gamma-linolenic acid and arachidonic acid (omega-6 fatty acids) and docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid (omega-3 fatty acids). These fatty acids are showing promise as safe adjunctive treatments for many skin disorders, including atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, acne vu
