Feather mites are potentially an important source of allergens for pigeon and budgerigar keepers.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies on allergy to feathers have not addressed whether organisms living on feathers (mites, lice, moulds) are a source of allergens. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether feather mites produced allergens of clinical relevance to bird keepers. METHODS: We examined serum IgE responses of 96 pigeon breeders to an extract of feather mites from pigeons (predominantly Diplaegidia columbae), using Western blotting, specific IgE assay using AlaSTAT EIA and RAST inhibition. RESULTS: Feather mites are a major source of soluble proteins derived from feathers, accounting for up to 1

Anatomical defects associated with a feathering mutant (Ottawa naked) in domestic fowl.

An autosomal recessive mutation (Ottawa naked, nk) that causes abnormal feathering, fusion of the third and fourth toes, and low viability has been reported previously in the chicken. In the present study mutant individuals were examined from three different stocks: the original one in which the mutant was found and two outbred F2 stocks. Defects of the tail region were observed in all mutants from the original stock (20/20) and in 64% (16/25) of the mutants produced from the outcrossed stocks. The severity of the defects ranged from mild distortion and scoliosis of the coccygeal vertebrae to

Damages on arctic seabird feathers: Exposure to low sulphur fuel oils is comparable to exposure to conventional oil.

New fuel oils with low content of sulphur are entering the market due to recent international regulations on the sulphur content. These oils show large variations in properties, but many have high pour points, low dispersibility and low evaporation, important for oil spill consequences. Though oil spills may be mitigated by e.g. in-situ burning, remaining residues may still be harmful for wildlife, particularly seabirds. Here, we quantified weight increase and clumping of barbules using the Amalgamation Index [AI] on seabird feathers following exposure to three different low sulphur fuel oils

Continued presence of enrofloxacin residues in feathers of broiler parent stock based on quantitative UHPLC-MS/MS detection.

Fluoroquinolones (FQ) are critically important antimicrobials. When broilers are treated with FQs, residues of these compounds can accumulate in their feathers, posing potential risks if feathers are repurposed, such as for use in animal feed. The aim of this study was to determine the residue depletion profiles of enrofloxacin (ENR) and its metabolite ciprofloxacin (CIP) in broiler parent stock feathers by using a sensitive UHPLC-MS/MS method. The total antibiotic residue concentration was determined. An experimental study was conducted with a treatment group and a control group. In the treat

Optimizing Genomic DNA Extraction from Avian Feathers: A Modified Phenol-Chloroform Approach for Enhanced Efficiency and Cost-Effectiveness.

The procurement of blood and tissue samples for DNA extraction in avian species intended for molecular studies is associated with the induction of discomfort and pain in the subjects, compounded by practical challenges in application and ethical considerations. Consequently, feathers have emerged as a more prevalent source for molecular investigations, particularly in the fields of poultry and ornithology. However, the effective extraction of DNA from feathers necessitates the breakdown of the hard keratinized tissue within the feather structure. This study aimed to devise a highly efficient,

Minimal-actuation feather star-inspired soft swimmers for multimodal 3D maneuverability.

Complex, three-dimensional (3D) motions typically require actuator arrays and complex control architectures. Here, we present a feather star-inspired soft robotic swimmer that uses only two pneumatic inputs to produce three distinct and switchable swimming modes: jellyfish-like pulsation, fishlike propulsion, and rotor-like reorientation. The robot owes this ability to mechanical intelligence: It leverages a monostable instability in its flexible arms to convert two control actuation inputs into 3D swimming modes, including ascension and descension, forward and backward swimming, hovering, and

Functional characterization of lncIMF_17214 in regulating intramuscular fat deposition of yellow-feathered broilers.

Intramuscular fat (IMF) content and lipid composition are key determinants of both the nutritional value and sensory attributes of poultry meat, yet the underlying regulatory mechanisms remain insufficiently elucidated. In this study, triglyceride (TG) content was employed as a quantitative phenotypic proxy to dissect the molecular basis of IMF deposition in yellow-feathered broilers. By integrating TG phenotypic data from 315 individuals with transcriptomic profiles and whole-genome resequencing datasets, a TG-associated long noncoding RNA (lncRNA), lncIMF_17214, was identified. Functional ch

Feather Defects in a Juvenile Common Swift (Apus apus) Associated with a Circovirus Infection.

The common swift is the most observed swift species in Germany. During the summer months in urban areas, juvenile swifts in need of help are frequently cared for in wild bird rescue centers. Providing adequate housing and veterinary treatment for hundreds of juvenile swifts can be very challenging for non-specialized organizations and contact with other bird species is often unavoidable. The knowledge about the transmission of infectious diseases between individuals of this bird species specialized in an airborne life and of other bird species is limited. In this presented case a wild juvenile

Conserved regulatory switches for the transition from natal down to juvenile feather in birds.

The transition from natal downs for heat conservation to juvenile feathers for simple flight is a remarkable environmental adaptation process in avian evolution. However, the underlying epigenetic mechanism for this primary feather transition is mostly unknown. Here we conducted time-ordered gene co-expression network construction, epigenetic analysis, and functional perturbations in developing feather follicles to elucidate four downy-juvenile feather transition events. We report that extracellular matrix reorganization leads to peripheral pulp formation, which mediates epithelial-mesenchymal

The digestive tract histology and geographical distribution of gastrointestinal microbiota in yellow-feather broilers.

Exhaustive understanding of intestinal physiological characteristics is the critical precondition for the improvement of intestinal health and growth performance of yellow-feather broilers (YFB). As a vital part of gastrointestinal tract, the symbiotic, complex, and variable microbiota have a profound effect on the nutrition, immunity, health, and production of broilers. Hence, the development status of proventriculus, jejunum, and cecum, and spatial heterogeneity of bacterial community in crop, proventriculus, gizzard, jejunum, cecum, and rectum of adult YFB were detected in our study. DOES PREENING BEHAVIOR REDUCE THE PREVALENCE OF AVIAN FEATHER LICE (PHTHIRAPTERA: ISCHNOCERA)?

Animals defend themselves against parasites in many ways. Defenses, such as physiological immune responses, are capable of clearing some infections. External parasites that do not feed on blood, however, are not controlled by the physiological immune system. Instead, ectoparasites like feather-feeding lice (Phthiraptera: Ischnocera) are primarily controlled by behavioral defenses such as preening. Here we test the hypothesis that birds able to preen are capable of clearing infestations of feather lice. We experimentally manipulated preening ability in a captive population of rock pigeons (Colu

Assessment of the effect of housing on feather damage in laying hens using IR thermography.

Plumage damage represents one of the animal-based measures of laying hens welfare. Damage occurs predominantly due to age, environment and damaging pecking. IR thermography, due to its non-invasiveness, objectivity and repeatability is a promising alternative to feather damage scoring systems such as the system included in the Welfare Quality ® assessment protocol for poultry. The aim of this study was to apply IR thermography for the assessment of feather damage in laying hens kept in two housing systems and to compare the results with feather scoring. At the start of the experiment, 16-week-

Functional exercise after total hip replacement (FEATHER): a randomised control trial.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged physical impairments in range of movement, postural stability and walking speed are commonly reported following total hip replacement (THR). It is unclear from the current body of evidence what kind of exercises should be performed to maximize patient function and quality of life. METHODS/DESIGN: This will be a single blind multi centre randomized control trial with two arms. Seventy subjects post primary total hip arthroplasty will be randomized into either an experimental group (n=35), or to a control group (n=35). The experimental group will attend a functional exerci

[Three cases of chronic bird fancier's lung associated with the use of feather bedclothes].

We report here 3 cases of chronic bird fancier's lung diagnosed immunologically using antibodies to pigeon dropping extract. None of the patients were bird fanciers but had indirect exposure to birds in their living environment, and had been using feather-filled duvets or pillows for a long time. Two of 3 cases were positive for environmental provocation tests and 2 cases had pathological findings of hypersensitivity pneumonitis such as multinucleated giant cells and non-necrotizing epithelioid cell granulomas. One case was resistant to steroid therapy alone and was successfully treated by coa

Rooster feathering, androgenic alopecia, and hormone-dependent tumor growth: what is in common?

Different epithelial organs form as a result of epithelial-mesenchymal interactions and share a common theme modulated by variations (Chuong ed. In Molecular Basis of Epithelial Appendage Morphogenesis, 1998). One of the major modulators is the sex hormone pathway that acts on the prototype signaling pathway to alter organ phenotypes. Here, we focus on how the sex hormone pathway may interface with epithelia morphogenesis-related signaling pathways. We first survey these sex hormone-regulated morphogenetic processes in various epithelial organs. Sexual dimorphism of hairs and feathers has impl

Effects of body weight groupings on productivity, feather loss, and nervousness of caged hens.

Two experiments compared performance traits, feather loss, and nervousness of hens kept in contrasting homogeneous and heterogeneous body weight groupings. In addition, 15-day periods of daily uterine palpating vs nonpalpating for an egg in the uterus were compared for effects on egg production. Eighteen-wk-old pullets were weighed and characterized as light, medium, or heavy and housed in laying cages at 19 wk for a 50-wk production period. In Experiment 1, two hens were placed in each cage and there were three treatment groups: both light (L), mixed or 1 heavy and 1 light (X), and both heavy

Novel tissue mechanics-guided cellular flows drive the formation of feather follicles.

Complex tissue architecture is achieved through multiple rounds of morphological transitions. Here, we analyzed cellular flows and tissue mechanics during avian skin development by employing chicken and transgenic quail skin explant models. We demonstrate how novel cellular flows initiate chemo-mechanical circuits that guide epithelial protrusion, folding, invagination, and spatial cell fate specification. During initial feather bud formation, stiff dermal condensates protrude vertically from the locally softened epithelial sheet. As the bud elongates, it stretches the epithelial cells at the
