Calcium feedback and sensitivity regulation in primate rods.

Membrane current was recorded from a single primate rod with a suction pipette while the cell was bath perfused with solutions maintained at a temperature of approximately 38 degrees C. A transient inward current was observed at the onset of bright illumination after briefly exposing the outer segment in darkness to Ringer's (Locke) solution containing 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX), an inhibitor of cGMP phosphodiesterase. After briefly removing external Na+ from around the outer segment in darkness, a similar current was observed upon Na+ restoration in bright light. By analogy to amphibi

Treatment of sinus tachycardia with heart-rate feedback.

A 23-year-old male with a history of sinus tachycardia was treated with heart-rate feedback in eight sessions. From a pretreatment average of 103 beats per minute (BPM) as recorded in two separate baseline sessions, the heart rate dropped to 66 BPM in the last treatment session. At follow-up the heart rate seemed stabilized within the normal range, averaging 68 BPM after 1 month and 73 BPM after 12 months. Simultaneous EMG recordings of m. frontalis suggest a generalized effect of this treatment. Results are discussed in terms of somatic and respiratory mediation.

Experimental analysis of EMG feedback in treating dystonia.

Recent clinical reports have suggested that electromyographic feedback offers promise as a palliative therapy for neuromuscular disorders. This study utilized a single-subject experimental analysis to evaluate the effects of EMG feedback training on a 20-year-old man with adult-onset idiopathic dystonia to achieve control of orofacial dysfunctions. Feedback training produced reductions in levels and variability of tension in facial and forearm muscles, as measured by EMG. Reliable blind observations of facial control indicated that feedback training enabled the patient to produce normal facial

The sociomateriality of prescribing feedback interventions: A scoping review.

OBJECTIVES: Prescribing errors frequently threaten patient safety, with early career doctors writing most prescriptions. Prescribing feedback interventions can improve the prescribing capabilities of early career doctors. These typically involve interactions between people and materials; however, these relations tend to be under-researched due to a general focus on human behaviours. This study aimed to trace the sociomaterial relations that produce and sustain prescribing feedback interventions for early career doctors in hospital settings. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of eight data

A Haptic Feedback Sleeve for a Flight Video Game.

Modern video games are increasingly aiming for more natural interactions and healthier gaming experiences. Haptic devices, in particular, can enhance these experiences by providing multimodal feedback and simulating a variety of body postures. However, limited attention has been paid to utilizing upper limb wearable haptic devices in video games. In this study, we developed a flight video game that incorporates a wearable pneumatic haptic device. Our designed haptic feedback sleeve can deliver changes in both haptic forces and applied areas on the forearm. The proposed device consists of 40 ai

Assessment of stabilizing feedback control of walking: A tutorial.

Walking without falling requires stabilization of the trajectory of the body center of mass relative to the base of support. Model studies suggest that this requires active, feedback control, i.e., the nervous system must process sensory information on the state of the body to generate descending motor commands to the muscles to stabilize walking, especially in the mediolateral direction. Stabilization of bipedal gait is challenging and can be impaired in older and diseased individuals. In this tutorial, we illustrate how gait analysis can be used to assess the stabilizing feedback control of

Delirium is associated with loss of feedback cortical connectivity.

INTRODUCTION: Post-operative delirium (POD) is associated with increased morbidity and mortality but is bereft of treatments, largely due to our limited understanding of the underlying pathophysiology. We hypothesized that delirium reflects a disturbance in cortical connectivity that leads to altered predictions of the sensory environment. METHODS: High-density electroencephalogram recordings during an oddball auditory roving paradigm were collected from 131 patients. Dynamic causal modeling (DCM) analysis facilitated inference about the neuronal connectivity and inhibition-excitation dynamic

Modulation of tactile feedback for the execution of dexterous movement.

Although dexterity relies on the constant transmission of sensory information, unchecked feedback can be disruptive. Yet how somatosensory feedback from the hands is regulated and whether this modulation influences movement remain unclear. We found that mouse tactile afferents recruit neurons in the brainstem cuneate nucleus, whose activity is modulated by distinct classes of local inhibitory neurons. Manipulation of these inhibitory circuits suppresses or enhances the transmission of tactile information, which affects manual behaviors. Top-down cortical pathways innervate cuneate in a complem

The comparison of motor learning performance with and without feedback.

Ten individuals were divided into two feedback and no-feedback groups. The effect of abstract visual feedback was investigated in these two groups. Using eight electroencephalography (EEG) electrodes, the induced event-related desynchronization/synchronization of the EEG of three motor imagery tasks (left hand, right hand, and right foot) was analyzed by wavelet and spatial filtering methods. Linear discriminant analysis was used to classify the three imagery tasks. Each imagery task's total length was set to 3 s and 1 s of it was used for the classification. The classification result was show

A potential role for integrin signaling in mechanoelectrical feedback.

Certain forms of heart disease involve gross morphological changes to the myocardium that alter its hemodynamic loading conditions. These changes can ultimately lead to the increased deposition of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins, such as collagen and fibronectin, which together work to pathologically alter the myocardium's bulk tissue mechanics. In addition to changing the mechanical properties of the heart, this maladaptive remodeling gives rise to changes in myocardium electrical conductivity and synchrony since the tissue's mechanical properties are intimately tied to its electrical cha

Prospective assessment of the impact of feedback on colonoscopy performance.

BACKGROUND: Colonoscopy is an operator-dependent procedure. The medical literature describes disparity in colonoscopy performance with respect to polyp detection, caecal intubation rates and procedural times. AIM: To assess prospectively the impact of feedback among a large cohort of colonoscopists on three performance parameters: caecal intubation rate, insertion time and withdrawal time. METHOD: In a prospective clinical study, procedural data from all out-patient colonoscopies performed by attending gastroenterologists at our institution were recorded routinely in a computerized database.

Validity of a new feedback method for the VEMP test.

CONCLUSIONS: We used a feedback method, based on a blood pressure manometer with inflatable cuff, to control the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM) contraction. To obtain comparable left-right VEMP responses, it is necessary (1) to determine which cuff pressures on both sides yield identical mean rectified voltage (MRV) values of the SCM contraction and (2) to apply these cuff pressures during the VEMP test. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of the SCM muscle contraction variability on the VEMP variables when applying the feedback method. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjects pushed with their ja

Modifications of ongoing tremors and locomotion by sensory feedback.

In principle tremors can be produced by (1) mechanical oscillators (combination of masses and springs), (2) reflex oscillators arising from sensory feedback pathways, or (3) central oscillators generated by single "pacemaker" neurones or interconnected networks. Recent studies supporting each of these mechanisms under certain conditions are discussed. Differences between these mechanisms are clarified by recent studies in Edmonton on the premammillary cat. This preparation shows a prominent reflexly-induced tremor which can be modified by mechanical loading and electrical stimulation. It also

Panendoscopic feedback in the study of voluntary velopharyngeal movements.

A videopanendoscope system was used to record velopharyngeal movements and to display those movements to subjects who produced them. Three normal adults were studied as they attempted to produce nonspeech velopharyngeal closure by use of two maneuvers: (1) laryngeal fixation and (2) modification of an elicited gag reflex. A rating system was devised to extract data from the videotapes. The findings indicated that subjects were able to utilize the videopanendoscopic feedback to guide voluntary velopharyngeal movements. The velopharyngeal movements were accompanied by larynx displacement and oth

The role of feedback for sensorimotor decisions under risk.

For goal-directed movements like throwing darts or shooting a soccer penalty, the optimal location to aim depends on the endpoint variability of an individual. Currently, there is no consensus on whether people can optimize their movement planning based on information about their motor variability. Here, we tested the role of different types of feedback for movement planning under risk. We measured saccades toward a bar that consisted of a reward and a penalty region. Participants either received error-based feedback about their endpoint or reinforcement feedback about the resulting reward. We

Predicting oscillations in complex networks with delayed feedback.

Oscillatory dynamics are common features of complex networks, often playing essential roles in regulating function. Across scales from gene regulatory networks to ecosystems, delayed feedback mechanisms are key drivers of system-scale oscillations. The analysis and prediction of such dynamics are highly challenging, however, due to the combination of high-dimensionality, nonlinearity and delay. Here, we investigate how structural complexity and delayed feedback are associated with oscillatory dynamics in complex systems, and provide an analytical approach combining theoretical dimension reduct
