Acceptability, perceived outcomes and underlying mechanisms of a professionally led support group intervention for women with breast cancer using a qualitative method approach.

OBJECTIVES: Breast cancer (BC) remains the most diagnosed cancer among women worldwide and its growing survivorship population faces numerous long-term physical and psychological challenges. Cancer support groups emerge as promising interventions to promote comprehensive management of the disease and survivorship needs, emotional well-being and social connection. Accordingly, this study aimed to analyse the acceptability and perceived impact of the Mind Support Group (MSG), a professionally led support group intervention designed for women with BC. DESIGN: A qualitative methodological approac

Investigating the Impact of a Back-Support Exoskeleton on Ergonomic Aspects of Order-Picking.

OCCUPATIONAL APPLICATIONSWe investigated the impact of wearing a passive back-support exoskeleton on posture, task duration, and subjective feedback during order-picking tasks. Participants performed a simulated and repetitive picking task both with and without the exoskeleton, using a randomized placebo methodology to investigate the psychological effect of the exoskeleton. Our findings indicate that, while the exoskeleton may offer certain physical benefits, it could also negatively affect task execution time and lead to less favorable subjective feedback from workers. Our results can help p

Effects of heart-rate feedback on estimated cardiovascular fitness in patients with panic disorder.

Psychological parameters that are believed to affect estimations of cardiovascular fitness were examined in patients with panic disorder and nonclinical controls. Fifty-four participants [panic disorder patients (n = 27) and age- and sex-matched nonclinical controls (n = 27)] completed a cycle ergometer test and were compared on the basis of estimated VO2 max. Participants were randomly assigned to experimental conditions in which they received heart-rate feedback or no feedback during the test. Patients with panic disorder exhibited lower VO2 max and decreased exercise tolerance (i.e., were m

Self-medication among traumatized youth: structural equation modeling of pathways between trauma history, substance misuse, and psychological distress.

In an effort to self-medicate psychological distress stemming from exposure to traumatic life events, at-risk youth may be likely to seek intoxication via substance use. Concomitantly, self-medication with psychoactive substances is theorized to confer risk of developing future psychiatric and substance use disorders. The present study employed structural equation modeling to examine self-medication among a sample of 723 youth in residential treatment for antisocial behavior via recursive and non-recursive relationships between trauma history, substance misuse, and psychological distress. Resu

Exploring patients' and family members' perspectives on intensive care unit experiences through unsolicited feedback: A qualitative content analysis.

BACKGROUND: Intensive care unit (ICU) stays are profound and distressing experiences for critically ill patients and their family members, often resulting in physical, psychological, cognitive, and social sequelae. Existing knowledge stems largely from structured interviews or questionnaires addressing predefined questions, potentially overlooking how individuals spontaneously and autonomously choose to express their experiences without being prompted. OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to explore the content of unsolicited feedback from former critically ill patients and family members, off

Modulatory effects of positive mood and approach motivation on reward processing: Two sides of the same coin?

In a previous study (Paul & Pourtois, 2017), we found that positive mood substantially influenced the neural processing of reward, mostly by altering expectations and creating an optimistic bias. Under positive mood, the Reward Positivity (RewP) component and fronto-medial theta activity (FMθ) in response to monetary feedback were both changed compared with neutral mood. Nevertheless, whether positive valence per se or motivational intensity drove these neurophysiological effects remained unclear. To address this question, we combined a mindset manipulation with an imagery procedure to create

Aberrant reward prediction errors in young adult at-risk alcohol users.

Previous studies suggest that individuals with substance use disorder have abnormally large responses to unexpected outcomes (reward prediction errors [RPEs]). However, there is much less information on RPE in individuals at risk of alcohol misuse, prior to neurobiological adaptations that might result from sustained alcohol use. Here, participants (mean age 23.77 years, range 18-32 years) performed the electrophysiological monetary incentive delay task. This task involved responding to a target stimulus following reward incentive cues to win, or avoid losing, the cued reward while brain activ

Sensitivity to negative and positive feedback as a stable and enduring behavioural trait in rats.

RATIONALE: According to psychological theories, cognitive distortions play a pivotal role in the aetiology and recurrence of mood disorders. Although clinical evidence for the coexistence of depression and altered sensitivity to performance feedback is relatively coherent, we still do not know whether increased or decreased sensitivity to positive or negative feedback is associated with 'pro-depressive' profile in healthy subjects. OBJECTIVE: Our research has been designed to answer this question, and here, we present the first steps in that direction. METHODS: Using a rat version of the pro

An analysis of a group teaching procedure for persons with developmental disabilities.

This study evaluated whether a concurrent group teaching procedure, in which all students respond simultaneously, could be used for persons with moderate or severe mental retardation. The teaching procedure used was the Task Demonstration Model, a program based on stimulus-control research and the fading techniques of behavioral psychology. Three teachers and three groups of students participated. Results showed that the teachers increased their rates of questions and instructions, positive feedback, and use of functional materials, but they reduced their rate of prompts to almost zero. Psychological, social, and behavioral barriers and facilitators to prehabilitation before cancer surgery: a qualitative systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Prehabilitation before cancer surgery improves postoperative outcomes, yet patient participation remains suboptimal. This qualitative systematic review aimed to synthesize psychological, social, and behavioral barriers and facilitators to preoperative prehabilitation among adult cancer patients. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in CNKI, Wanfang Data, CBM, VIP, PubMed, Web of Science, The Cochrane Library, Embase, and CINAHL from inception to January 13, 2025, with an updated search on May 31, 2025. A total of 1,184 articles were screened, and 20 qualitative studies were

Emotional cues reduce Pavlovian interference in feedback-based go and nogo learning.

It is easier to execute a response in the promise of a reward and withhold a response in the promise of a punishment than vice versa, due to a conflict between cue-related Pavlovian and outcome-related instrumental action tendencies in the reverse conditions. This robust learning asymmetry in go and nogo learning is referred to as the Pavlovian bias. Interestingly, it is similar to motivational tendencies reported for affective facial expressions, i.e., facilitation of approach to a smile and withdrawal from a frown. The present study investigated whether and how learning from emotional faces

Building resilience with the Stress Resilience Training System: Design validation and applications.

BACKGROUND: Resilience to stress is critical in today's military service. Past work has shown that experts handle stress in more productive ways compared to novices. Training that specifically addresses stress regulation, such as the Graduated Stress Exposure paradigm, can build individual and unit resilience as well as adaptability so that stressors trigger effective stress coping skills rather than stress injury. OBJECTIVE: We developed the Stress Resilience Training System (SRTS), a product of Perceptronics Solutions Inc., to demonstrate that a software training app can provide an effectiv

Optimizing single-session CBT delivery in an 8-session longitudinal therapeutic assessment (FRAX-TA) for women with FMR1 Premutation.

BACKGROUND: Therapeutic Assessment (TA) is a client-centered approach that uses psychological evaluation to promote therapeutic change. While TA has shown benefits across populations, its application to genetically at-risk groups remains limited. Women with the FMR1 premutation (PM) are vulnerable to mood, anxiety, and cognitive symptoms, collectively referred to as Fragile X-associated Neuropsychiatric Disorders (FXAND). However, tailored psychological assessments for this population are still lacking. This study introduces FRAX-TA, a TA-based protocol for women with the PM, integrating a Sin

Psychological reactions to ultrasound. Examination during pregnancy.

Twenty women underwent ultrasound examination three times during low-risk pregnancy. Before and after ultrasonography, the Symptom Questionnaire was applied to evaluate changes in psychological distress. Anxiety, depression, somatic symptoms, and hostility significantly decreased after the patients received video and verbal feedback during the first ultrasound examination. Such changes were consistently observed also during the subsequent two examinations.

Multiple feedback mechanisms activating corticotropin-releasing hormone system in the brain during stress.

Stress-associated disorders such as melancholic depression are characterized by persistent hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis activation and intensive anxiety. Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) appears to play an essential role in pathophysiology of such disorders. In an attempt to elucidate possible mechanisms underlying persistent activation of CRH in the central nervous system (CNS), we examined responses of hypothalamic and extrahypothalamic CRH systems to the stressors (immobilization stress or psychological stress) and interactions between these CRH systems and glucocor

Experience of adults with upper-limb difference and their views on sensory feedback for prostheses: a mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: Upper-limb prostheses are regularly abandoned, in part due to the mismatch between user needs and prostheses performance. Sensory feedback is among several technological advances that have been proposed to reduce device abandonment rates. While it has already been introduced in some high-end commercial prostheses, limited data is available about user expectations in relation to sensory feedback. The aim of this study is thus to use a mixed methods approach to provide a detailed insight of users' perceptions and expectations of sensory feedback technology, to ensure the addition of

Feedback versus no feedback in improving patient outcome in group psychotherapy for eating disorders (F-EAT): protocol for a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Continuous feedback on patient improvement and the therapeutic alliance may reduce the number of dropouts and increase patient outcome. There are, however, only three published randomized trials on the effect of feedback on the treatment of eating disorders, showing inconclusive results, and there are no randomized trials on the effect of feedback in group therapy. Accordingly the current randomized clinical trial, initiated in September 2012 at the outpatient clinic for eating disorders at Stolpegaard Psychotherapy Centre, aims to investigate the impact of continuous feedback on a

The Role of Somatosensory Information in Speech Perception: Imitation Improves Recognition of Disordered Speech.

PURPOSE: Perceptual learning paradigms involving written feedback appear to be a viable clinical tool to reduce the intelligibility burden of dysarthria. The underlying theoretical assumption is that pairing the degraded acoustics with the intended lexical targets facilitates a remapping of existing mental representations in the lexicon. This study investigated whether ties to mental representations can be strengthened by way of a somatosensory motor trace. METHOD: Following an intelligibility pretest, 100 participants were assigned to 1 of 5 experimental groups. The control group received no

The influence of child gender role and maternal feedback to child stress on the emergence of the gender difference in depressive rumination in adolescence.

Extensive research has linked a greater female tendency to ruminate about depressed feelings or mood to the gender difference in depression. However, the developmental origins of the gender difference in depressive rumination are not well understood. We hypothesized that girls and women may be more likely to ruminate because rumination represents a gender-stereotyped coping style that is associated with a more feminine gender role identity, maternal encouragement of emotion expression, and passive coping responses to stress. This study examined whether child self-reported gender role identity

BodyScreen: A pilot evaluation of a mobile app intervention targeting social media engagement and eating disorder risk in adolescent and young adult women.

Appearance-focused social media use contributes to body dissatisfaction and elevated eating disorder (ED) risk in adolescents and young adults. Scalable, digitally delivered interventions targeting social media behaviours alongside psychological risk factors remain limited. This pilot trial evaluated BodyScreen, a 4-week mobile app designed to reduce maladaptive social media engagement while promoting self-esteem and body appreciation. Eighty adolescent and young adult women in Canada aged 15-29 with elevated ED risk participated in a single-arm pilot trial. Assessments were conducted pre- and
