Enamel chipping and its ecological correlates in African papionins: Implications for hominin feeding behavior.

African papionins are classic paleoecological referents for fossil hominins. Enamel chips on the teeth of baboons and hominins are argued to represent responses to similar dietary habits; however, a comprehensive analysis of modern papionin chipping is lacking, leaving open the question of analog suitability. Here, we investigate patterns of antemortem enamel chipping across a diverse set of African papionin species occupying a range of ecological niches. We compare papionin chipping frequencies to estimates for Plio-Pleistocene hominins to address hypotheses of habitat and/or dietary similari

Feeding behavior elicited by mu opioid and GABA receptor activation in the lateral septum.

The lateral septum (LS), a brain region typically associated with behaviors involving reward, anxiety-like behavior, learning, and memory, has recently received increased interest due to its potential role in eating behavior. Our current results showed that morphine (5 μg) microinjected into the LS produced a stable feeding response. Specifically, across five days of repeated injections, there was no increase or sensitization effect, nor a decrease in feeding or tolerance. Additionally, we found that pretreatment with the broad-spectrum opioid receptor antagonist naloxone blocked morphine-elic

Effect of sodium nitroprusside on feeding behavior, voluntary activity, and cloacal temperature in chicks.

Nitric oxide (NO) is a well-known gaseous signaling molecule that is involved in a variety of physiological and pathological processes in vertebrates. The role of NO in physiological responses of birds has been investigated primarily using NOS inhibitors. Therefore, the effect of the absence of NO is well characterized. However, there is little knowledge on the effects of abundant NO in birds, which is the case in birds that have infections. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to determine if intraperitoneal (IP) and intracerebroventricular (ICV) injections of sodium nitroprusside

The Role of Glial Cells in Regulating Feeding Behavior: Potential Relevance to Anorexia Nervosa.

Eating behavior is controlled by hypothalamic circuits in which agouti-related peptide-expressing neurons when activated in the arcuate nucleus, promote food intake while pro-opiomelanocortin-producing neurons promote satiety. The respective neurotransmitters signal to other parts of the hypothalamus such as the paraventricular nucleus as well as several extra-hypothalamic brain regions to orchestrate eating behavior. This complex process of food intake may be influenced by glia cells, in particular astrocytes and microglia. Recent studies showed that GFAP+ astrocyte cell density is reduced in

Prevalence in primary school youth of pica and rumination behavior: The understudied feeding disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Little epidemiological evidence exists on rumination disorder behavior (RB) and pica behavior (PB). We examined prevalence of RB and PB and presence of comorbid feeding/eating disorder symptoms among school-aged children. METHOD: In elementary schools in Switzerland, 1,430 children (54.0% female) ages 7-13 completed the Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire for children (ChEDE-Q) and the Eating Disturbances in Youth Questionnaire (EDY-Q). RESULTS: EDY-Q behavior frequency showed 9.7% reported RB only, 10.0% reported PB only, and 3.1% reported RB + PB (≥1 on 0-6 Likert scale).

Opioid systems in the lateral hypothalamus regulate feeding behavior through orexin and GABA neurons.

The hypothalamus controls feeding behavior. Since central opioid systems may regulate feeding behavior, we examined the role of μ-, δ- and κ-opioid receptors in the lateral hypothalamus (LH), the hunger center, in feeding behavior of mice. Non-selective (naloxone; 3 mg/kg, s.c.) and selective μ- (β-funaltrexamine, β-FNA; 10 mg/kg, s.c.), δ- (naltrindole; 3 mg/kg, s.c.) and κ- (norbinaltorphimine, norBNI; 20 mg/kg, s.c.) opioid receptor antagonists significantly decreased food intake in food-deprived mice. The injection of naloxone (20 μg/side) into the LH significantly decreased food intake wh

A Small Potassium Current in AgRP/NPY Neurons Regulates Feeding Behavior and Energy Metabolism.

Neurons that co-express agouti-related peptide (AgRP) and neuropeptide Y (NPY) are indispensable for normal feeding behavior. Firing activities of AgRP/NPY neurons are dynamically regulated by energy status and coordinate appropriate feeding behavior to meet nutritional demands. However, intrinsic mechanisms that regulate AgRP/NPY neural activities during the fed-to-fasted transition are not fully understood. We found that AgRP/NPY neurons in satiated mice express high levels of the small-conductance calcium-activated potassium channel 3 (SK3) and are inhibited by SK3-mediated potassium curren

The effect of feeding enrichment methods on the behavior of captive Western lowland gorillas.

Three feeding enrichment treatments were tested in an outdoor yard used by six Western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla). In "Yard-toss," forage was thrown by hand over one third of the yard. In "Set-up," forage and browse were hand-scattered throughout the yard. "Set-up Enriched" was similar with the addition of either a hay- and forage-filled feeder or forage-filled boomer ball(s) suspended from a climbing structure. Each treatment was presented on 5 d. Behavior was recorded for 30 min before (baseline) and 30 min after the start of each treatment. All treatments led to more foragin

Neurotransmitters in key neurons of the hypothalamus that regulate feeding behavior and body weight.

During the last two decades attention has been focussed on the role of different neuropeptides in hypothalamic control of feeding behavior. Several hypothalamic peptides that participate in the control of ingestive behavior are produced in neuronal cell bodies of the arcuate nucleus and/or the lateral hypothalamic area. Apart from producing orexigenic or anorexigenic compounds of peptidergic nature, these neurons also produce excitatory and inhibitory amino acid neurotransmitters. The role of GABA and glutamate in regulating energy balance has received less attention in comparison to neuropept

Neuropeptide Y inhibits estrous behavior and stimulates feeding via separate receptors in Syrian hamsters.

Central injections of neuropeptide Y (NPY) increase food intake in Syrian hamsters; however, the effect of NPY on sexual behavior in hamsters is not known nor are the receptor subtypes involved in feeding and sexual behaviors. We demonstrate that NPY inhibits lordosis duration in a dose-related fashion after lateral ventricular injection in ovariectomized, steroid-primed Syrian hamsters. Under the same conditions, we compared the effect of two receptor-differentiating agonists derived from peptide YY (PYY), PYY-(3-36) and [Leu(31),Pro(34)]PYY, on lordosis duration and food intake. PYY-(3-36) p

Human satietin: rapid development of tolerance and its specificity to feeding behavior in rats.

Semipurified human satietin (SP hSAT) significantly (p less than 0.05) reduced food intake for each of five consecutive days when injected intraperitoneally (2 mg/kg/day). Tolerance developed rapidly during the second and third days of injection but food intake of those animals receiving the highest doses of Sp hSAT (1 and 2 mg/kg/day) remained significantly below (p less than 0.05) that of the saline-injected animals. Food intake of rats receiving doses of 0.5 and 0.25 mg/kg/day Sp hSAT was below that of the saline-treated group for the first two days of injection (p less than 0.05) but not t

Review: How Forage Feeding Early in Life Influences the Growth Rate, Ruminal Environment, and the Establishment of Feeding Behavior in Pre-Weaned Calves.

The provision of forage to pre-weaned calves has been continuously researched and discussed by scientists, though results associated with calf growth and performance have remained inconsistent. Multiple factors, including forage type, intake level, physical form, and feeding method of both solid and liquid feed, can influence the outcomes of forage inclusion on calf performance. In the current review, we summarized published literature in order to get a comprehensive understanding of how early forage inclusion in diets affects calf growth performance, rumen fermentation, microbiota composition

Relationship between Stress and Feeding Behaviors in Parents of Children with Developmental Disabilities.

Background: Controlling feeding practices are associated with negative child eating behaviors and an increased risk of obesity. Parental stress may be related to feeding practices. Children with developmental disabilities have increased obesity prevalence, and families may also experience increased stress. This study examined the relationship between family stress and parental feeding practices in children with developmental disabilities and how concern for the child's weight may moderate this relationship. Methods: Secondary analysis using a descriptive cross-sectional design was employed. Pa

Zea mays Volatiles that Influence Oviposition and Feeding Behaviors of Spodoptera frugiperda.

Fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) is a major global pest of many crops, including maize (Zea mays). This insect is known to use host plant-derived volatile organic compounds to locate suitable hosts during both its adult and larval stages, yet the function of individual compounds remains mostly enigmatic. In this study, we use a combination of volatile profiling, electrophysiological assays, pair-wise choice behavioral assays, and chemical supplementation treatments to identify and assess specific compounds from maize that influence S. frugiperda host location. Our findings reveal that met

Associations of infant feeding practices and picky eating behaviors of preschool children.

Picky eating behaviors are prevalent during childhood and are often linked to nutritional problems. However, information on the determinants of picky eating behaviors during infancy, when food acceptance patterns develop, is scarce. This study was conducted to evaluate the impact of infant feeding practices on the development of picky eating behaviors during preschool years. Baseline survey data from the Synergistic Theory and Research on Obesity and Nutrition Group Kids (STRONG Kids) program were used for this retrospective data analysis. Primary caregiver-child dyads were recruited from chil
