A Novel Method of Nasojejunal Feeding and Gastric Decompression Using a Double Lumen Silicone Tube for Upper Gastrointestinal Obstruction.

BACKGROUND: Provision of enteral nutrition with jejunal feeding in upper gastrointestinal obstruction is highly recommended. Access to jejunum can be obtained surgically, percutaneously, or endoscopically. Our institution routinely and preferentially utilizes a silicone nasojejunal tube that is inserted past the obstruction endoscopically. We use a custom dual channel tube that allows feeding at the distal tip and another channel 40 cm from the tip that enables decompression proximally. This is a report of our experience with this custom nasojejunal tube. METHODS: This is a prospective observ

Validation of Methods for Determination of Vitamins B1, D2, and D3 in Commercial Animal Feed Matrixes by LC-MS/MS.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin B1 (thiamine), D2 (ergocalciferol), and D3 (cholecalciferol) are essential nutrients in animal diets, critical for health and the maintenance of physiological processes. Deficiencies or excesses can lead to severe health issues, necessitating reliable quantification methods for QC, label claim compliance, and safety assurance in the pet food industry. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to extend and validate AOAC Official Methods  2015.14 (for vitamin B1) and 2016.05 (for vitamins D2 and D3) to animal feed matrixes using LC-MS/MS in a single-laboratory study. Optimisation of a One-Step Reusable Immuno-Affinity Purification Method for the Analysis and Detection of Fumonisin Mycotoxins in Foods and Feeds.

Fumonisins are among the most prevalent mycotoxins in maize and maize-based products, posing significant food safety and public health risks due to their hepatotoxic, nephrotoxic, and potential carcinogenic effects. Given the strict regulatory limits set by the European Commission and Codex Alimentarius, the development of reliable, sensitive, and matrix-robust analytical methods remain a priority for routine monitoring in both food and feed systems. In this study, a reusable immuno-affinity purification methodology for the quantitative determination of fumonisin mycotoxins (FB1, FB2 and FB3)

A comprehensive method on black-legged tick larvae and nymph feeding on mice to study Lyme disease transmission and acquisition.

Tick-borne diseases are a growing public health concern in the United States, with cases rising steadily each year. Lyme borreliosis, or Lyme disease, remains the most prevalent, affecting approximately 476,000 individuals annually. Human-driven changes in climate and ecosystems have expanded the habitat of pathogen-carrying ticks, facilitating the spread of these infections. Additionally, increased instances of tick-borne diseases transmission through human tissues have been reported. Despite ongoing efforts to manage these infections, their incidence continues to rise. To develop effective c

Responsive Feeding Practices to Promote Healthy Diets: A Mixed Method Study among Low-Income Caregivers with Toddlers.

Responsive feeding (RF), the reciprocal feeding approach between caregiver and child that promotes child health, is understudied among low-income caregivers. This mixed methods study with low-income caregivers of 12-to-36-month-olds aimed to (1) assess variability in RF and associations with children's dietary intake, and (2) explore caregivers' perceptions of RF. Caregivers (n = 134) completed an online survey with RF questions (n = 25), grouped into environmental (meal environment, caregiver modeling, caregiver beliefs) and child (self-regulation, hunger/satiety cues, food for reward, food a

Non-invasive methods to quantify the carcass parameters of sheep: Interaction between thermal environment and residual feed intake.

The thermal environment is important in unit production because the perception of thermal stress can reduce fertility, and productive performance, therefore its management is necessary. The use of non-invasive methods, such as infrared thermography and real-time ultrasonography, are widely used to evaluate indicators in animal production, without the need to slaughter the animals. Thus, we aimed to assess the effect of the thermal environment on the physiological parameters and carcass characteristics of Dorper sheep with positive and negative residual feed intake (RFI) using infrared thermogr

Health Care Utilization in the First Month After Birth and Its Relationship to Newborn Weight Loss and Method of Feeding.

OBJECTIVE: Guidelines recommend closer outpatient follow-up for exclusively breastfed newborns, especially those with pronounced weight loss, because of increased risk of hyperbilirubinemia and dehydration that might require readmission. Our objective was to determine how feeding method and weight loss are associated with neonatal health care utilization. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study conducted at Northern California Kaiser Permanente hospitals in 2009-2013 assessed 143,889 neonates to study the inpatient method of feeding as well as inpatient and outpatient weights. The main outcome

Development and validation of an LC-MS/MS method for analysing doxycycline in medicated fish-feed and evaluation of top-coating procedures.

Antimicrobials are widely used to control diseases in fish farming. Irregular use of these substances can reduce treatment efficacy and contaminate aquatic environments, promoting the emergence and spread of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria. Doxycycline, a broad-spectrum antimicrobial active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, is authorised for use in aquaculture in several countries and represents a promising therapeutic option. However, to date, no studies have investigated its incorporation into fish feed or its potential to leach into the environment. This study aimed to

A new method for in vitro feeding of Rhipicephalus australis (formerly Rhipicephalus microplus) larvae: a valuable tool for tick vaccine development.

BACKGROUND: Rhipicephalus microplus is a hard tick that has a major impact on cattle health in tropical and subtropical regions because it feeds on cattle and is implicated in the transmission of pathogens that cause diseases such as bovine anaplasmosis and babesiosis. Presently, acaricides are used to control tick infestation but this is becoming increasingly less effective due to the emergence of tick strains that are resistant to one or more classes of acaricides. Anti-tick vaccines are a promising alternative to control tick infestation in cattle. The life-cycle and host preference of R. m

Evaluation of DNA extraction methods for Bacillus anthracis spores spiked to food and feed matrices at biosafety level 3 conditions.

The DNA extraction efficiency from milk, whey, soy, corn gluten meal, wheat powders and heat-treated corn grain that were spiked with Bacillus anthracis and Bacillus thuringiensis spores was determined. Two steps were critical: lysis of the spores and binding of the free DNA to the DNA binding magnetic beads in the presence of the interfering powders. For the guanidine-thiocyanate based Nuclisens lysis buffer from Biomerieux we found that between 15 and 30% of the spores survived the lysis step. As most lysis buffers in DNA/RNA extraction kits are guanidine based it is likely that other lysis

Identification of Predictor Genes for Feed Efficiency in Beef Cattle by Applying Machine Learning Methods to Multi-Tissue Transcriptome Data.

Machine learning (ML) methods have shown promising results in identifying genes when applied to large transcriptome datasets. However, no attempt has been made to compare the performance of combining different ML methods together in the prediction of high feed efficiency (HFE) and low feed efficiency (LFE) animals. In this study, using RNA sequencing data of five tissues (adrenal gland, hypothalamus, liver, skeletal muscle, and pituitary) from nine HFE and nine LFE Nellore bulls, we evaluated the prediction accuracies of five analytical methods in classifying FE animals. These included two con
