Metacognitive beliefs across eating disorders and eating behaviours: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Literature has pointed out a probable association between metacognitive beliefs and eating disorders. To date, no study has synthetized all research exploring the differences or similarities in metacognitive beliefs across different eating disorders diagnoses and eating problems. AIMS: To review the evidence on metacognitive beliefs across the spectrum of eating disorders and eating behaviours. METHOD: A comprehensive search was conducted on PubMed and PsycInfo. The search terms used were: 'eating disorders/anorexia/bulimia/binge eating disorder/binge eating' AND 'metacognitions/

A Narrative Review on the Neurocognitive Profiles in Eating Disorders and Higher Weight Individuals: Insights for Targeted Interventions.

Background/Objectives: Recent research has increasingly explored the cognitive processes underlying eating disorders (EDs), including anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), binge eating disorder (BED), other specified feeding or eating disorders (OSFEDs), and individuals with higher weight (HW). This critical narrative review focuses on neurocognitive findings derived from mainly experimental tasks to provide a detailed understanding of cognitive functioning across these groups. Where experimental data are lacking, we draw on self-report measures and neuroimaging findings to offer supple

Meal-related cholecystokinin secretion in eating and affective disorders.

The satiety-inducing effects of centrally and peripherally administered cholecystokinin (CCK) in experimental animals have been well documented. Recently, studies in humans showed that CCK is released into plasma following food ingestion, a phenomenon postulated to promote meal-related satiety. To explore whether abnormal CCK secretion during feeding may be related to pathophysiological mechanisms in disorders associated with appetite abnormalities, we report here studies of the plasma CCK response to a test meal in patients with bulimia nervosa, as well as seasonal (hyperphagic) and melanchol

The role of interoception in the overlap between eating disorders and autism: Methodological considerations.

Significant comorbidity has been demonstrated between feeding and eating disorders and autism. Atypical interoception (perception of bodily signals) may, at least in part, be responsible for this association, as it has been implicated in the aetiology of both conditions. However, significant methodological limitations are impeding progress in this area. This paper provides a brief overview of how interoception has been linked to autism and feeding and eating disorders in both adolescent and adult populations before identifying several issues with current measures of interoception. We suggest t

Too healthy for their own good: orthorexia nervosa and compulsive exercise in the community.

BACKGROUND: The similarities and differences between orthorexia nervosa symptoms (ONs) and the symptoms and correlates of eating disorders listed in the DSM-5 need to be elucidated. ONs were examined in a volunteer community sample in conjunction with compulsive exercise, disordered eating, as well as emotional and behavioral correlates of eating disorders. METHODS: Participants were 561 adult volunteers (93 men, 17.09%) aged 19-72 (M = 32.7 ± 11), recruited via social media networks. Participants self-reported on the following measures online: Düsseldorf Orthorexia Scale, Compulsive Exercise

Group differences in binge eating, impulsivity, and intuitive and mindful eating among intermittent fasters and non-fasters.

Intermittent fasting (IF) is an increasingly popular diet involving short-term fasting and/or caloric restriction. While published research highlights physiological effects (e.g., weight, body fat) of IF, hardly any research has examined its associations with psychological factors. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between IF and binge eating, impulsivity, intuitive eating, and mindful eating. An undergraduate sample (N = 298) was recruited through a large southwestern university psychology subject pool. The sample was divided into three groups based on IF status: Current IF (n

Endogenous Opioids in the Homeostatic Regulation of Hunger, Satiety, and Hedonic Eating: Neurobiological Foundations.

This chapter (part one of a trilogy) summarizes the neurobiological foundations of endogenous opioids in the regulation of energy balance and eating behavior, dysregulation of which translates to maladaptive dietary responses in individuals with obesity and eating disorders, including anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder. Knowledge of these neurobiological foundations is vital to researchers' and clinicians' understanding of pathophysiology as well as the science-based development of multidisciplinary diagnoses and treatments for obesity and eating disorders. We highlight mechanisms of

A Systematic Review of Scientific Studies on the Effects of Music in People with or at Risk for Eating Disorders.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of the three main eating disorders (EDs) anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED) is increasing, and a growing number of patients with EDs is seeking professional help. Thus, there is a need for additional treatment strategies in EDs. The aim of this review was to summarize the literature on the benefits and risks of music as well as the evidence for its therapeutic application in people with EDs. METHODS: Following the PRISMA guidelines, we performed a systematic literature review on scientific studies on the effect of music in pe

Disordered eating, oral health and sports.

Multiple studies have identified that eating disorders are more common in elite athletes than in non-athlete populations. There are a wide range of types of eating disorders that can impact the oral and general health of athletes, including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, avoidant restrictive food intake disorder and other specified feeding and eating disorder. In addition, athletes can be affected by disordered eating such as relative energy deficiency in sport. This paper will explore what we know about the impact of eating disorders on oral health of athletes. We will consider sug

Do children with a Noonan syndrome-like RASopathy and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder benefit from behavioral therapy?

UNLABELLED: Children with Noonan syndrome-like RASopathies are at increased risk for developing feeding problems due to comorbid organic impairments at an early age, such as gastrointestinal problems or other organicity. Their feeding problems can ultimately often be classified as avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder, for which behavioral therapy is the first-choice treatment. The research question in this study is whether this treatment leads to similar results as in children without these RASopathies. We retrospectively investigated patients with a genetically confirmed Noonan syndrome-

The importance of eating behavior in eating disorders.

A disturbance in eating behavior is the defining characteristic of the clinical eating disorders, Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Binge Eating Disorder. Surprisingly little research has been devoted to assessing objectively the nature of the eating disturbances in these disorders, to elucidating what factors contribute to the development and persistence of these disturbances, or to describing how they change with treatment. This review, which is based on a Mars lecture delivered at the 2010 meeting of the Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior, reviews objective information about t

Eating Disorders in Infancy: Assessment and Interventions.

This article aims to integrate the physical and emotional dimensions of eating problems in infancy into the assessment process and the intervention approach. We emphasize the distinction between the child's own eating pattern and the parent-child feeding relationship. We describe the classification of eating behavior disorders in infancy and provide 2 short clinical vignettes that illustrate using the DC:0 to 5 classification framework. The assessment section includes the recommended physical/medical workup. Finally, we describe 2 clinical vignettes that illustrate the integrated multidiscipli

Role of eating disorders-related polymorphisms in obesity pathophysiology.

Human biological system provides innumerable neuroendocrine inputs for food intake control, with effects on appetite's modulation and the satiety signs. Its regulation is very complex, engaging several molecular interactions with many tissues, hormones, and neural circuits. Thus, signaling molecules that control food intake are critical for normal energy homeostasis and a deregulation of these pathways can lead to eating disorders and obesity. In line of this, genetic factors have a significantly influence of the regulation of neural circuits controlling the appetite and satiety pathways, as w

Emotion dysregulation across the span of eating disorder symptoms: Findings from a community sample of adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Emotion dysregulation is proposed as a key factor within eating disorder pathology. However, less is known about specific emotion regulation difficulties experienced by adolescents with varying levels of eating disorders symptoms. The present study examined the relationship between eating disorder behaviors and specific facets of emotion dysregulation, and differences in emotion dysregulation between eating disorder diagnostic groups. METHOD: Participants were 2,783 adolescents, 11-19 years (M = 14 years, 9 months, SD = 1 year, 6 months), who completed self-report measures as part

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation: a possible novel therapeutic approach to eating disorders.

The two most common eating disorders, anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, are characterized by aberrant eating patterns and disturbances in body image. Treatment involves combining individual, behavioural, group, and family therapies, possibly with medications. Studies have found that medication, chiefly antidepressants, could be of help in bulimia nervosa but the evidence is weaker for use in anorexia nervosa. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a non-invasive technique that briefly stimulates or depresses cortical areas within the brain. It has been used in the treatment

Are Eccentric Eating Habits Eating Disorders?

BACKGROUND: The study deals with particular kinds of eating habits that are unusual, not focused on weight, different from eating disorders, and not pathological. They are characterized by features such as the kind, amount, manner and style of eating that deviate from the common ones in their family or culture. They would be included today under the DSM- 5 categories of Avoidant restricting food intake disorder (AR-FID), and unspecified feeding or eating disorders (USFED). The question was whether they are mild forms of eating disorders or an independent set of behaviors. The objective was to

Eating disorders in adolescents: how does the DSM-5 change the diagnosis?

PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine the changes in diagnosis that occur in making the transition from Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) criteria in an adolescent medicine eating disorder program. METHODS: During the months of September 2011 through December 2012, a data sheet was completed at the end of each new outpatient eating disorder evaluation listing the patient's gender, age, ethnicity, weight, height, DSM-IV diagnosis, and proposed DSM-5 diagnosis. Change Is Never Easy, but It Is Possible: Reflections on Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder Two Years After Its Introduction in the DSM-5.

One of the most significant changes to the section on Feeding and Eating Disorders in the DSM-5 was that feeding disorder of infancy or early childhood was renamed avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder or ARFID, and the criteria was significantly expanded. This diagnostic category was informed by field studies, analysis, and expert opinion. To date, research exploring the prevalence, clinical characteristics and utility have helped substantiate the recognition and need for the diagnostic category of AFRID as a distinct eating disorder diagnosis in the DSM-5.
