Cycles of Neglect: A Statutory Review of State Policies Regarding Feminine Hygiene Product Provision During Incarceration.

Historically, American correctional institutions were designed for men. An increase in incarcerated females has required states to grapple with issues related to menstrual hygiene, including menstrual cycles. While the federal government requires that women and persons who menstruate in federal prisons be supplied with minimal menstrual hygiene supplies, there is no such mandate for menstruators incarcerated in state prisons. We conducted a review and analysis of state legal statutes and Department of Corrections' (DoC) policies pertaining to menstrual product provision to incarcerated individ

Towards a Wearable Feminine Hygiene Platform for Detection of Invasive Fungal Pathogens via Gold Nanoparticle Aggregation.

Candida albicans is an opportunistic fungus that becomes pathogenic and problematic under certain biological conditions. C. albicans may cause painful and uncomfortable symptoms, as well as deaths in immunocompromised patients. Therefore, early detection of C. albicans is essential. However, conventional detection methods are costly, slow, and inaccessible to women in remote or developing areas. To address these concerns, we have developed a wearable and discrete naked-eye detectable colorimetric platform for C. albicans detection. With some modification, this platform is designed to be direct

A cross-sectional study of contact allergens in feminine hygiene wipes: a possible cause of vulvar contact dermatitis.

UNLABELLED: Feminine hygiene wipes marketed toward women for maintaining freshness and cleanliness of the vulva and perineum are abundant both in-store and online. Many of these products boast being "fragrance free," "gentle," and "for sensitive skin," which is attractive to consumers. However, these claims do not necessarily mean they are free of potential allergens. OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to investigate the presence and prevalence of potential allergens in the most used feminine hygiene wipes. METHODS: An internet-based search was performed to identify best-selling name brand an

[Study of a new lactic acid and pH 5.2 lactoserum emulsion for feminine hygiene. Results of a clinical study].

A new solution intended for use in feminine hygiene, and composed of a lactic acid base and of lactoserum at pH 5.2, was tested for a period of 8 weeks on 40 women. This test focused on its influence on the pH and the flora, as well as on the tolerance of the mucous membrane. Successive measurements of the vulvar and vaginal pH revealed no statistically significant variation between the beginning and the end of the trial. At the study inclusion thirty patients had a normal flora; of these, twenty-eight showed no change during the eight weeks of the trial. A candidiasis appeared in two patients

Prenatal gender preference of mothers of feminine and masculine boys: relation to sibling sex composition and birth order.

A mother's (prenatal) wish for a girl has, at times, been implicated as an etiological factor for boyhood femininity or its DSM-III-R diagnostic equivalent, the Gender Identity Disorder of Childhood. In one sample of 52 feminine and 52 nonclinical control boys from Los Angeles, the proportion of mothers who recalled a wish for a girl during the pregnancy did not differ significantly between groups (26.9% vs. 19.2%, respectively); however, in both groups, the maternal wish for a girl was significantly more common in sibships in which all of the proband's older siblings were male. In a second sa

Uncovering the "riddle of femininity" in osteoarthritis: a systematic review and meta-analysis of menopausal animal models and mathematical modeling of estrogen treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Post-menopausal women are disproportionately affected by osteoarthritis (OA). As such, the purpose of this study was to (1) summarize the state-of-the-science aimed at understanding the effects of menopause on OA in animal models and (2) investigate how dosage and timing of initiation of estrogen treatment affect cartilage degeneration. DESIGN: A systematic review identified articles studying menopausal effects on cartilage in preclinical models. A meta-analysis was performed using overlapping cartilage outcomes in conjunction with a rigor and reproducibility analysis. Ordinary dif

The Experiences of Transgender and Gender Diverse Individuals after Intonation Training for a More Feminine-Sounding Voice: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals presumed male at birth often pursue voice and communication training (VCT) to develop a more feminine-sounding voice, as hormone therapy does not affect the voice. Previous research supports the integration of intonation training into gender-affirming VCT for TGD individuals seeking a more feminine-sounding voice. However, TGD individuals' experiences with intonation training for a more feminine-sounding voice remain unexplored. AIM: The aim of the present study was to explore the experiences of TGD individuals who underwent intonat

Feminine hygiene products and black women's reproductive health: a review of health inequities, racialized marketing, and practice implications.

Feminine hygiene products (FHPs), including douches, washes, and deodorants, are widely marketed as tools for maintaining vaginal cleanliness and freshness despite evidence linking some products to adverse sexual and reproductive health outcomes. Black women have historically been disproportionately targeted by FHP marketing and use certain products at higher rates, raising concerns about the intersection of vaginal hygiene practices, health inequities, and structural stigma. This review synthesizes historical, public health, clinical, and sociocultural scholarship on FHPs and Black women's re

Recurrent Vulvovaginal Candidiasis: Assessing the relationship between feminine/vaginal washes and other factors among Ghanaian women.

INTRODUCTION: Vulvovaginal Candidiasis (VVC) is a public health problem, with approximately 30-50% of women affected at least once during their lifetime. Recurrent Vulvovaginal Candidiasis (RVVC) is diagnosed following three or four repeated episodes of VVC in a calendar year. This condition poses health concerns with significant impacts on the quality of life of women. This cross-sectional study estimated the prevalence of RVVC and assessed the relationship between feminine/vaginal washes and other factors on RVVC among Ghanaian women in the Sekondi/Takoradi Metropolis. METHODOLOGY: A cross-

Feminine figures: body image and physical characteristics in trans women after puberty suppression and subsequent estradiol therapy.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have demonstrated an improvement in body image following gender-affirming hormone treatment (GAHT). In transgender girls, puberty suppression (PS) can be initiated before GAHT to prevent masculinization. AIM: The aim of this study is to assess body image, self-esteem and its determinants in trans women who received PS prior to GAHT. METHODS: Forty-two trans women from a specialized gender clinic who initiated treatment <18 years were included in this cross-sectional study of whom 23 initiated PS in early puberty (Tanner stage G2-3), and 19 in late puberty (Tanner

A young male adolescent with feminine appearance: diagnosis of 46, XX syndrome neglected for 4 years with gynaecomastia presentation.

Gynaecomastia is common in infancy and adolescent boys, but other inciting causes should be kept in mind and necessitate further evaluation should be conducted to determine any underlying conditions. A 22-year-old unmarried male adolescent visited our endocrinology clinic for feminine appearance despite operations for bilateral gynaecomastia 4 years ago. Physical examination showed inverted triangular distribution of pubic hair, sparse beard, small-sized testes, flaccid short penis and surgical scar of the chest wall. Serum hormones study revealed primary hypergonadotropic hypogonadism, and cy

PrEP Disparities Among Transgender Feminine, Transgender Masculine, Nonbinary, and Gender Expansive Youth and Young Adults in the United States.

This study assessed disparities in pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use among transgender and gender expansive youth and young adults (N = 477) between 15 and 24 years old in the CARES (ATN 149) and TechStep (ATN 160) study protocols within the National Adolescent Medicine Trials Network for HIV/AIDS Interventions (ATN). Structural equation modeling was used to test mediation pathways between gender identity and PrEP uptake among the full sample and stratified by sex assigned at birth. Lifetime PrEP uptake was higher among those assigned male at birth (26%) versus assigned female at birth (9%),

Feminine identity and functional benefits are key factors in women's decision making about upper limb prostheses: a case series.

PURPOSE: Although the DEKA Arm promises new abilities, it is unclear if women with upper limb amputation are willing to avail themselves of this new technology. The study purpose was to understand key factors and tradeoffs that shape women's attitudes towards the DEKA Arm. METHODS: This case series includes three women with transradial amputation. Structured surveys and semi-guided interviews were administered after completion of in-laboratory training and a home trial of the DEKA Arm. A constant comparative method with a grounded theory approach was used to generate a model describing women'

Talent has no race, has no face - but it has a skin colour: The 'appropriate femininity' with the case of Kurdish-Swedish Actress Evin Ahmad.

Sexist and misogynist attitudes towards actresses in the mainstream film industry and other media have been the target of feminists for decades. Stigmatized and stereotyped images of immigrants on the screen have also been scrutinized. However, very little attention has been given to the ways in which actresses with foreign background, not necessarily from Black communities, are portrayed and narrated. Addressing this issue would reveal how non-Western body images on screen are racialized according to certain Western beauty standards. Sweden is often described as the most gender-equal film ind

Feminine Hygiene Products and Volatile Organic Compounds in Reproductive-Aged Women Across the Menstrual Cycle: A Longitudinal Pilot Study.

Background: Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been detected in feminine hygiene products (FHPs), especially in tampons and sanitary pads. However, little is known about whether menstrual products can contribute to VOC exposure in women. Our objectives were to: (1) examine the variations of urinary VOC concentrations during menstrual cycles; (2) evaluate the relationships between the use of menstrual products and urinary VOC concentrations; and (3) link urinary VOC concentrations to those measured in menstrual products. Methods: We measured urinary concentrations of 98 target VOCs in 25 re

The association between multidimensional feminine norms, binge drinking and alcohol-related problems among young adult college women.

Alcohol consumption among women has steadily increased over the past 30years, and women's drinking behavior is now similar to that of men's. The escalation of alcohol use among women highlights the critical need to examine gender issues and motivational factors that contribute to binge drinking and related problems within this population. Feminine norms or the socially constructed beliefs, messages and attitudes about what it means to be a woman may contribute to within-group differences in drinking patterns among women. The current study examined the relationship between multidimensional femi

A Motivational Framework to Connect Traditional Feminine Gender Roles to Alcohol Use and Consequences Among Latina Young Adults in the United States.

Traditional feminine gender roles (TFGRs) may be important sociocultural predictors of drinking among U.S. Latinas; however, examining the explanatory role of drinking motives will improve current understanding of the connection between TFGRs and alcohol use. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the indirect pathways between four subscales of TFGRs, four subscales of drinking motives, and alcohol outcomes among Latina young adults. A large sample (N = 1,984) of Latina students from 12 U.S. universities completed an online survey. We used an indirect effects approach, in which four s

Resisting Trans Medicalization: Body Satisfaction and Social Contextual Factors as Predictors of Sexual Experiences among Trans Feminine and Nonbinary Individuals.

Past research has constructed a medicalized model of trans women's sexuality, where trans women are believed to be hyposexual and distressed by their bodies pre-transition, and are cured of their sexual dysfunction as a result of gender affirmative medical procedures. The current study engaged a community sample (N = 169) of trans feminine and nonbinary individuals assigned male at birth (TFNB) to investigate predictors of sexual experiences after addressing methodological biases of prior studies, including body satisfaction (using a modified Body Image Scale) and social contextual factors. 'I don't want to be that guy walking in the feminine product aisle': a Photovoice exploration of college men's perceptions of safer sex responsibility.

Incidence and prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) continue to increase among young heterosexual men and women in the United States. Although research studies examine the reasons why these young people are not engaging in safe sex behavior, many have not explored factors beyond individual behaviors. Much of the current research focuses on young women, for the most part leaving men out of the equation. In this study, a Photovoice methodology was used to examine social norms, media messaging a
