Type 1 diabetes mellitus and hyperadrenocorticism in a ferret.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) was diagnosed in a 6-year-old neutered male ferret with polyuria/polydipsia, symmetrical alopecia, and weight loss. Laboratory tests revealed severe hyperglycemia, glucosuria, and increased steroid hormone profile. Abdominal ultrasound revealed a bilateral enlargement of the adrenal glands. Significant clinical improvement was achieved with insulin- and leuprolide acetate-based therapy. After 2 months of therapy, the ferret showed a severe ketoacidosis, and the owner decided to euthanize the animal. Histological findings revealed carcinoma of the left adrenal cortex and

Astrocyte invasion and vasculogenesis in the developing ferret retina.

We studied the time course of astrocyte invasion and blood vessel formation in the developing ferret retina using glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP)-immunohistochemistry for astrocytes and isolectin B4 histochemistry for blood vessels. As in other mammals, strongly GFAP positive astrocytes invade the ferret retina from the optic nerve. At birth, strongly GFAP positive astrocytes have reached about 22% of the distance between optic disc and outer retinal edge whereas weakly GFAP positive processes already extend to the edge of the retina. At postnatal days P30-P37 about 82% of the distance

Hypereosinophilic syndrome with Hodgkin's-like lymphoma in a ferret.

Hodgkin's-like lymphoma involving the lung, mediastinum, liver, kidneys and mesenteric lymph nodes was diagnosed in a ferret. The diagnosis was based on the presence of an admixture of CD3+ small lymphocytes with smaller numbers of macrophages, eosinophils, and large, pleomorphic, frequently multinucleated, Reed-Sternberg-like cells which were immunoreactive to BLA.36 monoclonal antibody. In addition, the liver, pancreas, small intestine and lungs were infiltrated with moderate to large numbers of eosinophils, forming eosinophilic granulomas with occasional deposition of Splendore-Hoeppli mate

Ultrasonography of the adrenal glands in the dog, cat, and ferret.

Ultrasonography has become an important modality for imaging adrenal glands in small animals. Normal adrenal glands and structural abnormalities, such as changes in size, shape, and echogenicity, can be identified. In the case of adrenal tumors, ultrasonography is a valuable tool for identifying neoplastic masses with local and regional involvement, as well as potential abdominal metastases. When correlated with clinical findings and results of hematologic, serum biochemical and endocrine tests, ultrasonographic findings make a substantial contribution to the diagnosis of adrenal diseases in d

Superficial spreading pyoderma and ulcerative dermatitis in a ferret.

Abstract  A case report of an 8-month-old ferret with severe ulcerative dermatitis of the ventral abdomen and medial thigh regions is presented. Cutaneous biopsies of the periphery of the ulcerative lesions revealed large, confluent, superficial epidermal pustules containing inflammatory cellular debris and Gram-positive cocci, as well as perifollicular dermal necrosis. These histological findings are consistent with superficial spreading pyoderma in conjunction with dermal coagulative necrosis. Résumé- Un furet mâle de 8 mois est présenté pour une dermite ulcérative sévère du ventre et des fa

Granulomatous enteritis caused by Mycobacterium avium in a ferret.

Granulomatous enteritis caused by Mycobacterium avium was diagnosed in a pet ferret evaluated for anorexia, vomiting, and diarrhea. Delayed gastric emptying was identified during barium sulfate contrast radiography. A constriction in the duodenum, which was an area of granulomatous inflammation on histologic examination, was surgically removed. After removal of this lesion, the ferret did well for 8 months, but clinical signs returned. At a second surgery, a nodule was removed from the pylorus. The ferret died 2 weeks later. At necropsy, granulomatous inflammation, with acid-fast organisms, wa

Plague in a black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes).

Diagnosis of sylvatic plague in a captive black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes) was based on gross and microscopic lesions, fluorescent antibody tests, culture of Yersinia pestis, and immunohistochemistry. Gross lesions consisted of acute hemorrhage and necrosis associated with cervical and mesenteric lymph nodes, subcutaneous hemorrhages, and pulmonary edema. Acute edema, hemorrhage, and necrosis with numerous bacteria in blood vessels and sinusoids characterized microscopic lesions. Occurrence of fatal plague in a black-footed ferret potentially has significant implications for recovery of

Fetal alcohol syndrome in the ferret (Mustela putorius).

Gastric intubation of 1.5 g ethanol/kg maternal body weight produced a significant teratogenic response in ferrets (Mustela putorius) treated once daily from gestational days 15 through 35. This response was evident by a rise in the frequency of fetuses with one or more malformations (21%), and by a rise in the frequency of litters with one or more malformed fetuses (50%). Palatoschisis and greater relative intermedial canthi distance observed in this study are diagnostic features of the fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). Although mean (+/- SEM) peak blood alcohol levels of 207 +/- 9 mg/dl did not

Histology and mucosubstance histochemistry of ferret lingual glands.

The histology and mucosubstance histochemistry of the ferret lingual glands were studied. Both serous and mucous minor salivary glands were present in the posterior part of the tongue. In serous glands, acinar cells and a very few cells of the excretory ducts contained granules which gave reactions for neutral mucopolysaccharides only. The mucous glands, including the duct system, contained mainly weakly sulphated acidic mucin, some neutral mucin but no carboxylated mucin. Occasional goblet cells were present in the excretory ducts of both serous and mucous glands. They contained weakly sulpha

Gross and microscopic anatomy of the biliary tract of the ferret.

The gross and microscopic anatomy of the biliary tract of the ferret was studied. The liver consisted of six separate lobes. The coronary ligament was not present. Histologically, it was very similar to that of man. The gall-bladder was present and was a pear-shaped sac. Its muscle coat was very thick and well developed. Hepatic ducts were multiple. Minor hepatic ducts formed three major ducts, the left, central and the right. A single common hepatic duct was not present. The cystic duct generally arose from the central duct. The bile duct was formed by the union of three major hepatic ducts.

A case of a complete atrioventricular canal defect in a ferret.

BACKGROUND: Atrioventricular canal defect is a rare congenital disorder of the heart and describes the presence of an atrial septal defect, a variable presentation of ventricular septal alterations including ventricular septal defect malformations in the mitral and tricuspid valves. The defect has been described in human beings, dogs, cats, pigs, and horses. CASE PRESENTATION: This paper describes the case of a complete atrioventricular canal defect in a four-year-old intact male pet ferret (Mustela putorius furo), which was presented due to posterior weakness, ataxia, and decreased appetite.

Testicular Teratocarcinoma in a Ferret (Mustela putorius furo).

A 7-month-old male domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo) was presented for evaluation of unilateral testicular enlargement. Microscopic examination of the left testicle revealed a neoplasm with differentiation along multiple cell lines (ectoderm, endoderm, mesoderm) including respiratory epithelium, bone and haired skin. A poorly differentiated epithelial component was dispersed throughout the neoplasm with invasion of testicular lymphatics. The animal developed progressive dysuria and was euthanized. At necropsy, metastasis of the poorly differentiated epithelial component was present in th

Transvenous heartworm extraction in a ferret with caval syndrome.

A 10-month-old ferret was diagnosed with heartworm disease and caval syndrome. Associated clinical signs included weakness and a green-colored urine, identified as biliverdinuria. Despite the animal's small size, removal of three heartworms via transvenous heartworm extraction was successfully performed. Although at least one female worm remained in the right ventricle, the majority of clinical signs related to the presence of the heartworms resolved. The ferret was subsequently managed medically with corticosteroids and monthly heartworm prevention. This case documents the presence of biliver

Reproduction of the female ferret (Mustela putorius furo).

The domestic ferret is a seasonally polyoestrous species. Females reach puberty at the age of 8-12 months. Females exhibit a constant oestrus between late March and early August if they are not bred. Increasing tumescence in the pink-coloured vulva is a sign of pro-oestrus. Oestrus can persist for up to 5 months, but once ovulation is induced, either pregnancy or pseudopregnancy ensues. Follicular development and atresia overlap in such a manner that there is a recent cohort of follicles available for ovulation whenever copulation might occur. Copulation may last from 15 min to 3 h, the averag

Experimental chronic wasting disease (CWD) in the ferret.

Chronic wasting disease (CWD), a prion disease of North American deer, elk and moose, affects both free-ranging and captive cervids. The potential host range for CWD remains uncertain. The susceptibility of the ferret to CWD was examined experimentally by administering infectious brain material by the intracerebral (IC) or oral (PO) route. Between 15 and 20 months after IC inoculation, ferrets developed neurological signs consistent with prion disease, including polyphagia, somnolence, piloerection, lordosis and ataxia. Upon first sub-passage of ferret-adapted CWD, the incubation period decrea

What is your diagnosis? Preputial mass in a ferret.

: A 7-year-old neutered male polecat-type ferret (Mustela putorius furo) was presented for evaluation of a cutaneous mass close to the preputial orifice. Cytologic examination of a fine-needle aspirate revealed numerous large clumps of amorphous pink mucinous material and numerous large clumps of slightly pleomorphic epithelial cells. The cells were arranged in papillary structures, palisades, and loosely cohesive sheets with a vaguely honeycomb appearance. Occasional acinar formations were also seen. The cells had moderate to large amounts of finely granular gray to gray-blue cytoplasm. The c

Primary hyperaldosteronism in a domestic ferret with an adrenocortical adenoma.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 6-year-old spayed female domestic ferret was evaluated because of lethargy, alopecia, pruritus, and an abdominal mass. CLINICAL FINDINGS: On initial examination, nonregenerative anemia, mild azotemia, and a large left adrenal gland mass were identified. However, deterioration of the ferret's general condition prevented excision of the mass, and dyspnea, weakness, hypertension, and severe hypokalemia developed. Plasma aldosterone concentration was >3329 pmol/L, confirming a provisional diagnosis of hyperaldosteronism. High concentrations of sex hormones were also observed,
