Thermal wet decomposition of Prussian Blue: implications for prebiotic chemistry.

The complex salt named Prussian Blue, Fe4[Fe(CN)6]3 x 15 H2O, can release cyanide at pH > 10. From the point of view of the origin of life, this fact is of interest, since the oligomers of HCN, formed in the presence of ammonium or amines, leads to a variety of biomolecules. In this work, for the first time, the thermal wet decomposition of Prussian Blue was studied. To establish the influence of temperature and reaction time on the ability of Prussian Blue to release cyanide and to subsequently generate other compounds, suspensions of Prussian Blue were heated at temperatures from room temper

Amperometric glucose biosensors based on layer-by-layer assembly of chitosan and glucose oxidase on the Prussian blue-modified gold electrode.

A glucose biosensor based on layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembling of chitosan and glucose oxidase (GOD) on a Prussian blue film was developed. First, Prussian blue was deposited on a cleaned gold electrode then chitosan and GOD were assembled alternately to construct a multilayer film. The resulting amperometric glucose biosensor exhibited a fast response time (within 10 s) and a linear calibration range from 6 microM to 1.6 mM with a detection limit of 3.1 microM glucose (s/n = 3). With the low operating potential, the biosensor showed little interference to the possible interferents, includi

Comparative efficacy of thallium adsorption by activated charcoal, prussian blue, and sodium polystyrene sulfonate.

BACKGROUND: Although Prussian blue is considered the antidote of choice for thallium poisoning, the lack of a Food and Drug Administration-approved pharmaceutical formulation has led to the search for other adsorbents. Activated charcoal has been demonstrated to adsorb thallium in vitro, and the similarity between thallium and potassium has led some authors to consider the use of sodium polystyrene sulfonate as a potential adsorbent. This experiment was designed to compare the relative thallium binding efficacy of these agents in a standard isotherm model. METHODS: A standard aqueous solution

A simple procedure for the estimation of very small amounts of nitrogen in lipids.

1. About 0.1mug.atom of combined nitrogen, in lipids and a few other compounds, can be determined quantitatively by the gentle digestion of dry samples in 10ml. test tubes with perchloric acid for 30min., followed by the estimation of the resulting ammonia as the stable blue colour (lambda(max.) 635mmu) produced by the addition of phenol and nitroprusside, an alkaline phosphate buffer and alkaline hypochlorite. 2. Deionized distilled water is required, but the other reagents need no special purification if chosen and handled with care. 3. The results are linear with from 0.015 to 0.15mug.atom

Development of an enzyme-free glucose sensor using the gate effect of a molecularly imprinted polymer.

The instability of enzymatic glucose sensors has prevented the development of a practical artificial pancreas for diabetic patients. We therefore developed an enzyme-free glucose sensor using the gate effect of a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP). This sensor has the advantages of improved stability and a simplified manufacturing procedure. An adduct of glucose and 4-vinylphenylboronic acid (VPBA) was synthesized by esterification and was then purified. The copolymer of the glucose/VPBA adduct and methylene bisacrylamide was grafted onto an indium tin oxide electrode surface. Glucose was was

Severe refractory anemia with ringed sideroblasts and bone marrow aplasia in a child.

Sideroblastic anemia is an extremely rare disorder in children. This report describes a 9-year 4-month-old girl with severe refractory anemia with ringed sideroblasts (RARS) that progressed to severe bone marrow aplasia. Ultrastructural studies revealed the presence of abundant intramitochondrial deposits of iron in erythroblasts similar to that observed in adults with this disorder. Although acid ferrocyanide staining confirmed the ferric valence of the iron deposits, they lacked morphologic and cytochemical characteristics associated with ferritin and hemosiderin. Bone marrow culture showed

An ultrastructural analysis of osteochondritic growth plate cartilage in growing swine.

In growing swine, ossification failure due to osteochondrosis has an incidence of nearly 100% in the distal ulna of animals at six months of age, yet the etiology of the disease is understood poorly. In this study, the ultrastructure of the chondrocyte and its pericellular matrix is analyzed in normal growth plates and in growth plates with lesions characteristic of osteochondrosis using aldehyde primary fixatives and osmium-ferrocyanide as the secondary fixative. Chondrocytes in lesion areas fail to undergo normal hypertrophic cell maturation, and they have an accumulation of rough endoplasmi

An Ultrasensitive Multiplexing Approach via Integrating Boosted Nanozyme Activity with Multidimensional Information for Antibiotic Recognition.

Most studies focus on improving the activity of nanozymes to build a nanozyme-based "chemical tongue" for the sensitive discrimination of multiple analytes. However, the construction of sensing units with multidimensional signals is often overlooked, which greatly limits the ultrasensitive identification of antibiotics and even their subtypes. Herein, we have for the first time designed the high performance of a "chemical tongue" by integrating high peroxidase (POD)-like activity Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) with multidimensional information from multiple oxidation products of 3,3',5,5'-tetr

Prussian Blue Nanoparticles and Their Potential for the Treatment of Internal 137Cs Contamination in Mice.

Radiological emergencies, such as nuclear power plant accidents or the detonation of radiation-dispersive devices, can release radionuclides into the environment, with Cesium-137 (137Cs) of particular concern due to its long half-life (30.17 years), high water solubility, and widespread dispersibility. Once incorporated, 137Cs distributes in soft tissues and exhibits a long biological half-life. The approved commercial countermeasure for internal decorporation is Radiogardase®-Cs, the insoluble Prussian Blue (PB; ferric hexacyanoferrate(II)), which binds radiocesium and thallium in the gastroi

Paper-based electrochemical device for the determination of H₂S in murine lysates for liquid biopsy application.

BACKGROUND: Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S) is a biologically active endogenous gas, produced in mammalian tissues, which plays a critical role in several pathophysiological processes, including oncogenesis. This gas-transmitter can exert diametrically opposite effects on neoplastic cell proliferation, depending on the duration and concentration of H₂S exposure. Due to this dual role, antineoplastic drugs, aimed at modulating H₂S levels, are attracting considerable interest in both research and clinical settings. On this basis, H₂S could serve as a diagnostic biomarker, potentially indicating the prese

Degradation of norfloxacin by red mud-based prussian blue activating H2O2: A strategy for treating waste with waste.

The massive accumulation of red mud (RM) and the abuse of antibiotics pose a threat to environment safety and human health. In this study, we synthesized RM-based Prussian blue (RM-PB) by acid solution-coprecipitation method to activate H2O2 to degrade norfloxacin, which reached about 90% degradation efficiency at pH 5 within 60 min and maintained excellent catalytic performance over a wide pH range (3-11). Due to better dispersion and unique pore properties, RM-PB exposed more active sites, thus the RM-PB/H2O2 system produced more reactive oxygen species. As a result, the removal rate of norf

Enzyme-Regulated In Situ Formation of Copper Hexacyanoferrate Nanoparticles with Oxidase-Mimetic Behaviour for Colorimetric Detection of Ascorbate Oxidase.

In this study, a copper hexacyanoferrate nanoparticle with excellent oxidase-mimetic behaviour has been synthesized through a simple precipitation method. The synthesized copper hexacyanoferrate nanoparticle has intrinsic oxidase-like activity, which can catalyze the chromogenic reaction of 2,2'-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonate) through an O2•- reactive oxygen-species-participated process. On the other hand, K3[Fe(CN)6] can be reduced by ascorbic acid (AA) to produce K4[Fe(CN)6], thereby inhibiting the formation of the copper hexacyanoferrate nanoparticles. Furthermore, ascorbate o

Prussian blue nanoparticles: synthesis, surface modification, and biomedical applications.

Prussian blue nanoparticles (PBNPs) are a nanomaterial that presents unique properties and an excellent biocompatibility. They can be synthesized in mild conditions and can be derivatized with polymers and/or biomolecules. PBNPs are used in biomedicine as therapy and diagnostic agents. In biomedical imaging, PBNPs constitute contrast agents in photoacoustic and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). They are a good adsorbent to be used as antidotes for poisoning with cesium and/or thallium ions. Moreover, the ability to convert energy into heat makes them useful photothermal agents (PAs) in phototh

Thermal remediation of cyanide-contaminated soils:process optimization and mechanistic study.

Site soils with persistent cyanide compounds (primarily iron-cyanide complex) pose potential hazards to the environment and require remediation before redevelopment. This study evaluated the possibility of thermal treatment on remediation of cyanide-contaminated soils via batch heating experiments spanning a wide temperature range (200-500 °C). The change with operation variables of total cyanide and some reaction intermediates (e.g. CN-) was analyzed in order to elucidate the optimal variables that guarantee cyanide removal while generating no hazardous byproducts. Temperature, heating time a

Layer-by-layer self-assembly aluminum Keggin ions/Prussian blue nanoparticles ultrathin films towards multifunctional sensing applications.

In this study we described the nanocomposites films of specially synthesized inorganic Prussian blue (PB) nanoparticles and polyoxocation Al(13) Keggin ions that possess the excellent sensing activities. Film fabrication using layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly technique was followed by electrochemical characterization. The assembled multilayer Al(13)/PB films as sensor devices for both the catalytic reduction of H(2)O(2) and detecting the change of relative humidity were also investigated. The sensitivity of the biosensor was 0.886 mA cm(-2)mM(-1), and about two orders of magnitude change in

A label-free point-of-care electrochemical biosensor for early and accurate detection of monkeypox.

This research paper presents the development of an electrochemical sensor for detecting the A29 protein, a critical antigen associated with the Monkeypox (MPX) virus. The sensor incorporates a functionalizing monoclonal antibody at the working gold electrode's surface as the virus's recognition element. Differential pulse voltammetry was utilized to monitor the presence of the A29 protein. To facilitate the detection of the antigen-antibody coupling on the electrode surface, the sensor utilized a redox probe consisting of a 5 mM solution of ferri/ferrocyanide (1:1 M ratio). Experimental result

Evaluation of the size effect of hydrophobic ring substitution on 9-O position of berberine on DNA binding.

The interaction of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) with medicinally significant small molecules has long piqued the interest of researchers because its applications are directly related to the discovery of new classes of drugs. Keeping this in mind, here we report berberine derivatives and their interaction with calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA). In this report we discussed on the structural perspectives and thermodynamic characteristics of the interaction of four 9-O-substituted berberines (BRDR1 to BRDR4) with CT-DNA. The binding affinity of BRDR-DNA complexes increased with increasing the cycloalkane ri

Toward More Reliable Measurements of Electron-Transfer Kinetics at Nanoelectrodes: Next Approximation.

Steady-state voltammetry at nanoelectrodes and scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) have recently been used to measure kinetics of several rapid heterogeneous electron transfer (ET) reactions. One problem with those experiments was that the dependence of the shape of the steady-state voltammogram on kinetic parameters becomes weak when the reaction rate approaches the diffusion limit. The possibility to fit the same experimental voltammogram using different combinations of the standard rate constant, transfer coefficient, and standard potential results in significant uncertainties in ext

Ascorbate and dehydroascorbate modulate nitric oxide-induced vasodilations of rat coronary arteries.

Soluble guanylyl cyclase (GC) is a heme-containing protein that is a predominant target of nitric oxide (NO). This study examined whether the reductant, ascorbate (ASC), the oxidant, dehydroascorbate (DHAA), or other redox agents modulated the sensitivity of isolated rat coronary arteries to NO-induced vasodilations. Based on NO measurements with a NO-sensitive electrode, NO dilated the arteries with a pEC50 of 8.24 +/- 0.05. The potency of NO was significantly enhanced in the presence of ASC (pEC50 = 8.70 +/- 0.02) but was diminished in the presence of DHAA (pEC50 = 7.91 +/- 0.15). The potenc
