Amniotic fluid steroid levels and fetal adrenal weight in congenital adrenal hyperplasia.

The concentration of 17-OH-progesterone was determined in second trimester amniotic fluid collected from 58 pregnancies at risk for fetal 21-hydroxylase deficiency. The prediction was incorrect in 1 male nonsalt-loser who had an increased plasma 17-OH-progesterone concentration at 3 months of age. All 11 infants predicted to be affected were salt-losers. The adrenals from 2 affected fetuses available for study were significantly enlarged in comparison with adrenal size in 84 normal fetuses from 15 to 26 weeks' gestation. Amniotic fluid steroid analysis reliably predicts the fetus with 21-hydro

Maternal Therapy with Ad.VEGF-A165 Increases Fetal Weight at Term in a Guinea-Pig Model of Fetal Growth Restriction.

In a model of growth-restricted sheep pregnancy, it was previously demonstrated that transient uterine artery VEGF overexpression can improve fetal growth. This approach was tested in guinea-pig pregnancies, where placental physiology is more similar to humans. Fetal growth restriction (FGR) was attained through peri-conceptual nutrient restriction in virgin guinea pigs. Ad.VEGF-A165 or Ad.LacZ (1 × 1010vp) was applied at mid-gestation via laparotomy, delivered externally to the uterine circulation with thermosensitive gel. At short-term (3-8 days post surgery) or at term gestation, pups were

Is the fetal cerebroplacental ratio better that the estimated fetal weight in predicting adverse perinatal outcomes in a low risk cohort?

OBJECTIVE: In high-risk pregnancies combining the cerebro-placental ratio (CPR) with the estimated fetal weight (EFW) improves the identification of vulnerable fetuses. The purpose of this study was to assess the CPR and EFW's ability to predict adverse obstetric and perinatal outcomes in a low-risk pregnancy, when measured late in gestation. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of women who birthed at Mater Mothers Hospitals, Brisbane, Australia between 2010 and 2015. We included all nonanomalous singleton pregnancies that had an ultrasound scan performed between 36 and 38 weeks gestation

Pregnancy Weight Gain as a Predictor of Fetal Wellbeing in Liver Transplant Recipients.

BACKGROUND Gestational weight gain (GWG) is an important index influencing perinatal outcomes. Inappropriate weight gain during pregnancy is strongly associated with multiple pregnancy complications. In pregnant liver transplant recipients whose risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes is already high, this aspect may be even more significant. The present study analyzed the gestational weight gain in female liver transplant recipients and its effect on neonatal complications. MATERIAL AND METHODS A cohort study of retrospective data was performed in the 1st Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, M

Accuracy of ultrasound in estimating fetal weight and growth discordancy in triplet pregnancies.

AIMS: Sonographic estimation of fetal weight is a fundamental part of the routine obstetrical practice and may affect management decisions particularly in multiple gestations. The data available on the accuracy of sonographic estimation of fetal weight in triplets are very limited. In the present study we investigated the accuracy of sonographic fetal weight estimation and discordancy in triplet gestations. METHODS: We analyzed the sonographic data of 33 sets of triplets born at one medical center between January 2001 and March 2013. Estimated fetal weight was calculated from biometric measur

Survival and weight increase in the fetal rat after selective hypophysectomy in utero.

Rat fetuses were subjected to selective hypophysectomy in utero on day 16, 17 or 18 of gestation and inspected on day 22 (the day before birth). The survival rate of fetuses operated on day 17 and 18 was about 20 and 50%, respectively. Losses were mostly caused by the surgery preceding the removal of the pituitary, and no significant survival-promoting activity of the gland could be demonstrated. The surgical injuries, as such, also reduced the weight increase substantially. Still, the loss of the pituitary was followed by a further reduction in weight gain, which on day 22 was about 10% lower

Accuracy of ultrasound-derived estimated fetal weight in a cohort of periviable births.

OBJECTIVE: As neonatal resuscitation is offered at increasing extremes of prematurity, ultrasound-derived estimated fetal weight (EFW) is a crucial data point in patient counseling. We aimed to evaluate the accuracy of EFW compared to birthweight (BW) among periviable neonates, and identify factors associated with accuracy. METHODS: Medical records were abstracted for all neonates born between 22 weeks 0/7 days and 24 weeks 6/7 days at a single tertiary center between January 2013 and May 2024. Liveborn, non-anomalous neonates with an ultrasound-derived EFW within 7 days of delivery were incl

Placental Thickness Correlates with Severity-Weighted Fetal Dysfunction in the Third Trimester.

Background: Placental thickness has been associated with adverse perinatal outcomes, but the relationship to specific fetal abnormalities seems to not yet be well understood. This study investigates whether increased placental thickness correlates with the severity of fetal cardiac and extracardiac conditions using a structured classification and severity-weighted scoring system. Methods: We undertook a retrospective analysis of 1452 fetal echocardiograms conducted during the third trimester at a tertiary referral institution from the years 2022 to 2025. The diagnoses were categorized into fou

Prediction of intrapartum fetal compromise at the end of pregnancy; is Doppler, and not weight, that matters.

Despite the fact that labor depends on too many interacting factors and no parameter can fully predict its outcome, fetal cerebral Doppler has emerged as the most reliable tool for prediction, in contrast with fetal weight, which performs significantly worse in the last weeks of pregnancy. The importance of the cerebral Doppler follows the inverse pathway of fetal weight increasing its performance in the last weeks of pregnancy and reaching its highest ability prior to labor. A combination of cerebral flow, fetal weight, and selected clinical information may obtain moderate predictions of labo

Assessment of Fetal Kidney Growth and Birth Weight in an Indigenous Australian Cohort.

Introduction: Indigenous Australians experience higher rates of renal disease and hypertension than non-Indigenous Australians. Low birth weight is recognized as a contributing factor in chronic disease and has been shown to increase the risk of renal failure in adulthood. A smaller kidney volume with fewer nephrons places an individual at risk of hypertension and renal failure. Indigenous Australians have fewer nephrons than non-Indigenous Australians. In this study, intrauterine fetal and kidney growth were evaluated in 174 Indigenous Australian babies throughout gestation in order to record

The Effect of the Amniotic Fluid Index on the Accuracy of Ultrasonographic-Estimated Fetal Weight.

BACKGROUND: Fetal weight estimation is one of the most important aspects of antenatal care. The effects of amniotic fluid volume on the accuracy of estimated fetal weight (EFW) depend on the amount of fluid, in particular whether it is polyhydramnios or oligohydramnios. Previous studies have reported conflicting results of the effects of amniotic fluid volume on EFW accuracy. AIM: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of isolated oligohydramnios cases and polyhydramnios on the accuracy of EFW. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted at a tertiary center. The stu

Longitudinal changes in gestational weight gain and the association with intrauterine fetal growth.

OBJECTIVE: Total pregnancy weight gain has been associated with infant birthweight; however, most prior studies lacked repeat ultrasound measurements. Understanding of the longitudinal changes in maternal weight gain and intrauterine changes in fetal anthropometrics is limited. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective data from 1314 Scandinavian singleton pregnancies at high-risk for delivering small-for-gestational-age (SGA) were analyzed. Women had ≥1 (median 12) antenatal weight measurements. Ultrasounds were targeted at 17, 25, 33, and 37 weeks of gestation. Analyses involved a multi-step process. First

Clinical accuracy of estimated fetal weight in term pregnancies in a teaching hospital.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether clinical characteristics alter the accuracy of clinical estimation of fetal weight (EFW) in term pregnancies in a teaching hospital. METHODS: Secondary analysis of a retrospective cohort study of patients presenting for labor at term. Clinical EFW was performed using Leopold maneuvers. A Spearman's rank correlation coefficient (r) was used to evaluate the linear relationship between clinical EFW and actual birth weight (BW). Body mass index (BMI), gestational age, fetal station, and admission diagnosis were evaluated with respect to their impact on clinical EFW.
