Fibrin glue in ophthalmology.

Suturing is a time consuming task in ophthalmology and suture induced irritation and redness are frequent problems. Postoperative wound infection and corneal graft rejection are examples of possible suture related complications. To prevent these complications, ophthalmic surgeons are switching to sutureless surgery. A number of recent developments have established tissue adhesives like cyanoacrylate glue and fibrin glue as attractive alternatives to sutures. A possible and promising new application for tissue adhesives is to provide a platform for tissue engineering. Currently, tissue glue is

Fibrin glue mixed with platelet-rich fibrin as a scaffold seeded with dental bud cells for tooth regeneration.

Odontogenesis is a complex process with a series of epithelial-mesenchymal interactions and odontogenic molecular cascades. In tissue engineering of teeth from stem cells, platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), which is rich in growth factors and cytokines, may improve regeneration. Accordingly, PRF was added into fibrin glue to enrich the microenvironment with growth factors. Unerupted second molar tooth buds were harvested from miniature swine and cultured in vitro for 3 weeks to obtain dental bud cells (DBCs). Whole blood was collected for the preparation of PRF and fibrin glue before surgery. DBCs we

[The use of fibrin glue in neurosurgical operations].

Fibrin glue has been used in 22 neurosurgical patients and following five effects which are very much helpful in neurosurgical practice were recognized. Adhesive effect--Dural defect at cranial base was closed with lyophilized dura and fibrin glue. Hemostatic effect--Fibrin glue soaked oxycel was applied for hemostasis of the bleeding from venous sinus, dura, skull edge and cut surface of tumor. Blocking and sealing effects--In cases of craniopharyngioma, cyst wall around the inserted tube was sealed with oxycel and fibrin glue. CSF leakage from open sphenoidal sinus in aneurysmal operation wa

Fibrin Deposit on the Peritoneal Surface Serves as a Niche for Cancer Expansion in Carcinomatosis Patients.

Peritoneal metastasis (PM) is a very serious complication of gastrointestinal and gynecological malignancies which is poorly documented. Modified mesothelial cell layer and their microenvironments can favor fibrin deposition for cancer cell adhesion. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy of peritoneal surface and cancer cell clusters from cancer patients was done. Ascites and its impact on mesothelial cells were assessed by cytokine array. Neprilysin, matrix metalloprotease, epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT) related molecules (E-cadherin, Snail, Slug, Twist, Vimentin and Fibronec

Use of fibrin glue versus martius flap interposition in Trans-vaginal vesicovaginal fistula repair: A prospective randomized trial.

INTRODUCTION: In vesicovaginal fistula repair, studies have shown the utility of fibrin glue as interpositioning layer. Our goal in this study is to determine the effectiveness of fibrin glue as an interpositioning layer versus martius flap interposition and primary healing alone. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We prospectively analyzed 64 patients over a period of 24 months from February, 2023 to January, 2025 and divided them as group-A in which fistulas were repaired anatomically using fibrin glue interpositioning, group-B in which fistulas were treated using only primary repair and group-C in whi

Impact of different fibrin glue application methods on inguinal hernia mesh fixation capability.

The use of fibrin glue for inguinal hernia mesh fixation has been suggested to be effective in preventing hematomas and reducing postoperative pain compared to tacks and sutures.. The effect of fibrin glue can vary significantly based on the device used. This study assessed the efficacy of fibrin glue based on the type of devices used in an ex vivo system. The rabbit's abdominal wall was trimmed to a size of 3.0 × 6.0 cm and was secured at the edges with metal fixtures. To measure the maximum tensile strength at the point of adhesion failure, the hernia mesh was fixed to the rabbit's abdominal

Fibrin glue-assisted excision of a large recurrent microphthalmic cyst.

Microphthalmic cysts are rare. Although small cysts can be left in situ to promote orbital expansion, large cysts require drainage or surgical excision. Complete surgical excision is notoriously difficult, and incomplete excision may result in cyst reformation. We describe a novel method of using fibrin glue to aid successful complete removal of a large recurrent microphthalmic cyst in a 6-year-old child who previously had multiple drainage and surgical attempts.

Laser tissue welding in lung and tracheobronchial repair: an animal model.

BACKGROUND: Violation of the integrity of the airway (pulmonary parenchymal air leak or tracheobronchial injury) remains a challenging problem in chest medicine and thoracic surgery. Tissue sealants such as fibrin glue have been suggested to improve outcomes but they are still associated with significant failure rates. Laser tissue welding (LTW) is an alternative method that produces wound repairs that are significantly stronger than those of fibrin glue and may be used to repair air leaks. METHODS: We used an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees-approved New Zealand white rabbit mode

Fistula-in-ano: advances in treatment.

BACKGROUND: Several techniques have been described for the management of fistula-in-ano, but all carry their own risks of recurrence and incontinence. Technology has evolved over the past 2 decades that may enable surgeons to deal with this troublesome issue with greater success. This review summarizes the history of fistula-in-ano management, the current techniques available, and describes new technologies. METHODS: Medline searches were performed using the PubMed, Ovid, Embase, Cochrane, and Google Scholar databases to identify articles reporting on fistula-in-ano management using surgery a

Novel therapeutic approach in the management of band keratopathy using amniotic membrane transplantation with fibrin glue.

A 91-year-old man with advanced glaucoma, status post trabeculectomy, and pseudophakia had a symptomatic recurrent band and bullous keratopathy in his left eye. Three previous ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid chelations with immediate recurrence of the calcic band keratopathy with frequent breakdown produced recurrent painful corneal epithelial defects. The calcified lesions were removed surgically, resulting in a smooth ocular surface. An 8-mm, 100-micron trephination was performed and a 360 degrees corneal lamellar peripheral dissection pocket was created. After covering the denuded corneal s

Fibrin glue for all anal fistulas.

The aim of this study was to determine if a new sphincter muscle-sparing technique that uses fibrin glue was effective in closing all types of anal fistulas. All patients with anal fistulas who were seen by a single surgeon over a 2-year period were treated with fibrin glue. Six to 8 weeks after a seton was placed in the fistula tract, either autologous fibrin glue or commercially available fibrin sealant was used to close the fistula tract. Twenty patients were treated with a mean follow-up of 10 months. Etiology of the anal fistulas was as follows: cryptoglandular in 13, Crohn's disease in f

[Postoperative chylous ascites: its etiology and treatment].

Postoperative chylous ascites is a rare clinical condition that occurs as a consequence of disruption of the abdominal lymphatics after retroperitoneal dissection. Generally the management is conservative based on a low fat diet and total parenteral hyperalimentation. However, such therapy requires weeks to months before resolution of the ascites. On the other hand, surgical approach is associated with a high failure rate to ligate leaky lymphatics. The Authors, therefore suggest a surgical resolution of the ascite with the use of fibrin glue to occlude rapidly and permanently the lymphatics r

An Injectable Clinical-Grade Fibrin Hydrogel Restores Fertility in Intrauterine Adhesions via MSC-Mediated Immune and Regenerative Modulation, Unlocking an Equivalent Cell-Free EV-Based Therapy.

While mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and extracellular vesicles (EVs) hold therapeutic potential, their clinical translation is hindered by suboptimal delivery systems. This study presents a directly translatable strategy for treating intrauterine adhesions (IUA) using a clinical-grade, injectable fibrin hydrogel (Porcine Fibrin Sealant, PFS) to deliver MSCs/EVs. This platform not only ensures biocompatibility and surgical handling but also provides a protective niche. In rat models of mechanically- and ethanol-induced IUA, optimal-dose PFS-MSCs injected into the uterine cavity promote endometr

Biology of the peritoneum in normal homeostasis and after surgical trauma.

The peritoneum is a serous membrane, which has a protective function for the contents of the abdominal cavity. It maintains homeostasis by allowing exchange of molecules and production of peritoneal fluid, thus providing an environment in which intra-abdominal organs can function properly. When traumatized, whether by surgery or due to inflammatory processes, a series of responses come into action to regenerate the injured part of the peritoneum. The inflammatory reaction causes influx of inflammatory cells but also activates resident mesothelial cells, ultimately leading to a fibrinous exudat

Endoscopic debridement and fibrin glue injection of a chronic Morel-Lavallée lesion of the knee in a professional soccer player: A case report and literature review.

A Morel-Lavallée lesion is a post-traumatic closed degloving injury of soft tissue. The lesion is due to a shearing trauma with separation of subcutaneous tissue from underlying fascia. When conservative treatment fails, surgical treatment is imperative. Commonly, open drainage and debridement is performed. This case report describes a Morel-Lavallée lesion of the knee in a professional soccer player who was successfully treated with endoscopic debridement and fibrin glue injection after failure of conservative management. This method achieves the goal of an open surgical debridement without e
