Normal tissue damage in the legs of mice was enhanced by the presence of a fibrosarcoma (FSa I) in the leg at the time of treatment with single doses of 30 to 70 Gy. Damage was assessed by measuring leg contracture 23 to 365 days after irradiation of 8 mm diameter tumors. Animals with and without tumors were treated with 1.0 mg misonidazole/g body weight 30 min before irradiation to ensure that the tumors did not recur and interfere with the assessment of contracture. The data suggest that in some cases, late damage may be enhanced by destructive effects of the tumor on the tumor bed.

One hundred thirty patients with histologically verified primary fibrosarcoma of bone, unassociated with any pre-existent benign bone condition, were treated at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center between 1918 and 1973. This series of cases represents approximately 5% of primary malignant bone tumors treated in our institution. Eighty-nine of the lesions were medullary or central in location, and 41 were periosteal or peripheral. OBJECTIVES: To present a rare case of congenital infantile fibrosarcoma (IFS) mimicking a vascular anomaly and to emphasize the diagnostic value of color Doppler and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in differentiating IFS from benign vascular tumors such as congenital hemangioma.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We present the case of a 4-month-old male with a congenital lumbosacral mass initially suggestive of congenital hemangioma. Ultrasound and Doppler examination demonstrated a highly vascularized lesion; however, the imaging findings remained equivocal for a definitive diagnosis of hemangioma.

OBJECTIVES: Primary ovarian fibrosarcomas are extremely rare neoplasms, and only 50 cases have been reported in the English literature. Diagnosis can be difficult because of this condition's rarity, and other similar appearing mesenchymal lesions should be ruled out.

A 70-year-old man with liver cirrhosis presented to us with abdominal distention. Computed tomography revealed a giant retroperitoneal tumor. Examination of a biopsy specimen led to a diagnosis of primary inflammatory fibrosarcoma of the retroperitoneum. However, disease progression was rapid, and the patient died 6 weeks after the onset of the disease. Autopsy revealed that the tumor arose from the retroperitoneum and infiltrated the omentum and mesentery. Prognosis of inflammatory fibrosarcoma is poor if resection is incomplete. Establishment of treatment for unresectable cases is necessary.

Congenital infantile fibrosarcoma (CIFS) is a rare mesenchymal tumor that is primarily developed in the soft tissue of distal extremities and occasionally in unusual locations such as the lung and retroperitoneum. The anatomical location, histology, and immunohistochemistry of 10 ferret dermal and subcutaneous fibrosarcomas were examined. Seven of the 10 tumors were from locations used for vaccination. UNLABELLED: Fetal hydrops associated with neonatal tumours is an uncommon occurrence. The diagnosis can be established prenatally by ultrasound examination. The treatment of choice is surgery which may be curative. We report the case of a male born at 32 weeks gestation who presented with severe hydrops fetalis and a thoracic mass. The child could not be operated upon because of rapid clinical deterioration. The autopsy findings confirmed the diagnosis of congenital fibrosarcoma. This is, to our knowledge, the first case of hydrops fetalis associated with fibrosarcoma.

A 12-year-old, castrated male, domestic shorthair cat with a previous penetrating trauma to the left globe which progressed to a phthisical eye presented for acute blindness. Ophthalmic examination and electroretinography of the right eye were found to be normal. Following euthanasia, gross and microscopic examinations were completed. A left intraocular, posttraumatic fibrosarcoma with extension to the optic nerve and chiasm and induced right optic nerve fiber degeneration at the optic chiasm with necrosis leading to central amaurosis were diagnosed.

Supravoltage irradiation is commonly thought not to be carcinogenic. Several recent studies question this concept, as does our case report. A 50-year-old woman with stage 1 squamous carcinoma of the left side of the tongue was treated in 1973 with 73 Gy of supravoltage irradiation. We report here on two black African girls who developed an acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). The first patient was a premature girl born to healthy parents. She suffered from interstitial pneumonitis during the first week of life and died of it at the age of 6 months. Her mother, although asymptomatic, had polyclonal hypergammaglobulinaemia, a reversed T-helper/T-suppressor ratio and a decreased lymphocyte response to mitogens.
