Exploring governance for a One Health collaboration for leptospirosis prevention and control in Fiji: Stakeholder perceptions, evidence, and processes.

UNLABELLED: Fiji has a high burden of leptospirosis, with endemic infection and epidemic outbreaks with high mortality, often associated with flooding and cyclones. As a zoonosis, leptospirosis control requires interventions in sectors beyond the usual control of health-in Fiji, the dairy and sugar industries, and water and sanitation and rodent control in communities. This paper presents the findings of qualitative research to inform policy around governance for a One Health multisectoral approach to leptospirosis control. METHODS: Key informants from relevant government agencies and industr

Clinical and laboratory observations on patients with primary and secondary dengue type 1 infections with hemorrhagic manifestations in Fiji.

An extensive epidemic of dengue type 1 infection with a high incidence of hemorrhagic manifestations occurred on the island of Viti Levu, Fiji beginning early in 1975. Previous dengue outbreaks in this population were such that in 1975 two types of dengue patients were observed, one group of patients experienced primary dengue type 1 infection, whereas another experienced their dengue type 1 infection approximately 4 years after a dengue type 2 infection. Clinical and laboratory findings for the two forms of infection were assessed in patients hospitalized for their disease, usually with hemor

Antibiotic-resistant pathogens and heavy metal-tolerant bacteria in Batissa violacea: A study from the Ba River, Fiji.

The Ba River in Fiji is a critical livelihood source for bivalve harvesters, yet increasing anthropogenic activities threaten the safety of its aquatic food sources. This study comprehensively examines the microbial communities associated with freshwater bivalves (Batissa violacea) and river sediments, focusing on antibiotic resistance and heavy metal (HM) tolerance. Samples from soft tissues, gills, and sediments were subjected to Most Probable Number (MPN) tests, antibiotic susceptibility assays, HM tolerance analysis, and 16S rRNA gene sequencing to identify microbial taxa and their functio

Attitudes of Victim-Blame Toward Image-Based Sexual Abuse Victim-Survivors in Fiji: Understanding Gendered and Cultural Norms.

Victim-blaming and entrenched gender norms are a persistent barrier to justice and support pathways for victim-survivors of sexual and domestic violence in Fiji. While these issues have been considered in relation to physical forms of abuse, there remains limited understanding of how these attitudes may impact victim-survivors of technology-facilitated sexual violence, particularly image-based sexual abuse-the non-consensual creation, capture, distribution, or threatened distribution of nude or sexual imagery. This article examined these dynamics drawing on a reflexive thematic analysis of foc

An assessment of latrine front-end characteristics and associated surface E. coli indicated faecal contamination in rural Fiji.

In Fiji, 90% of the population has access to basic sanitation; however, there are still persistent health risks from endemic faecal-oral diseases such as typhoid fever. There is a need to assess the contribution of existing sanitation facilities in the faecal pathogen transmission pathway. This study was conducted as part of a larger planetary health study across 29 rural communities within five river catchments. This specific research aimed to characterise latrine front-ends, both infrastructure and usage behaviour, and to assess the faecal contamination levels on various frequently contacted

Drawing time-density curve with Fiji/ImageJ: An alternative approach for parametric coding of cerebral digital subtraction angiography.

BACKGROUND: Quantitative spatiotemporal analysis of digital subtraction angiography could support clinical decision making for the management of cerebral vascular disease. However, there is a lack of free and user-friendly applications. The objective of our study is to devise a free and simple solution for parametric coding of digital subtraction angiography. NEW METHOD: By driving the time-density curves in the region of interest, the digital subtraction angiography images were color-coded and quantitatively analyzed using fully open-source and free software (Fiji/ImageJ). The similarity fac

Community profiling of the intestinal microbial community of juvenile Hammerhead Sharks (Sphyrna lewini) from the Rewa Delta, Fiji.

Fourteen juvenile scalloped hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini; SHS) were captured between November and December 2014 in the Rewa Delta in Fiji, and assessed for intestinal microflora characterisation using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing by Illumina Miseq. The microbial population revealed a fluctuating dominance between the Enterobacteriaceae and Vibrionaceae families, namely Citrobacter and Photobacterium spp. Other related marine operational taxonomic units were closely related to Afipia felis, Chloroflexus aggregans, Psychrobacter oceani, Pontibacter actiniarum and Shigella sonnei. Two sharks

Hospital admissions for skin and soft tissue infections in a population with endemic scabies: A prospective study in Fiji, 2018-2019.

Scabies is an important predisposing factor for impetigo but its role in more serious skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) is not well understood. Information is limited on incidence of SSTIs in the presence of endemic scabies. We conducted a prospective study of hospital admissions for SSTIs in the Northern Division of Fiji (population: 131,914). Prospective surveillance for admissions with impetigo, abscess, cellulitis, wound infection, pyomyositis, necrotizing fasciitis, infected scabies, and crusted scabies was conducted at the Division's referral hospital between 2018 to 2019. Dairy farm demographics and management factors that played a role in the re-emergence of brucellosis on dairy cattle farms in Fiji.

Little is published on risk factors associated with bovine brucellosis in Pacific island communities. The 2009 re-emergence of bovine brucellosis in Fiji enabled us to do an interview-based questionnaire survey of 81 farms in the Wainivesi locality of the Tailevu province on the main island of Fiji to investigate what risk factors could have played a role in the re-emergence of the disease. The survey was conducted on 68 farms that had no positive cases of bovine brucellosis and on 13 farms in the same area where cattle had returned a positive result to the Brucella Rose Bengal test. Navigating the Unknown: A Sensemaking Inquiry into the Mental Health Experiences of First-Year University Students at a Regional University in Fiji.

This study examines the mental health experiences of first-year university students at a regional university in Fiji that serves twelve Pacific Island nations. The study addresses a gap in Pacific higher education research, where student mental health has received limited systematic attention. This study uses an interpretive qualitative approach guided by sensemaking theory. It examines how first-year students understand the emotional, social, academic, and financial challenges of transitioning to university in a diverse Pacific higher education setting. Data was collected through three semi-s

Impact of Covid-19 on the incidence and severity of odontogenic infections in Fiji islands: a multicenter hospital-based retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Severe odontogenic infections (OIs), often associated with untreated dental caries, can lead to life-threatening complications. In Fiji, dental caries is highly prevalent, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, limited access to dental care may contributed to the progression of untreated lesions, potentially resulting in an increased number of severe OI cases. However, there is a lack of evidence from Fiji on this issue. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the presentation of patients with OIs. METHODS: A retrospective, multicenter hospital-base

From Manual to Macro: A Reproducible Fiji Workflow for Semi-automated Collagen Fibril Diameter Quantification in Transmission Electron Microscopy.

Quantitative assessment of collagen fibril diameter is essential for understanding ultrastructural changes in aging, connective tissue disorders, and extracellular matrix remodeling. Although transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is widely used for this purpose, existing methods for fibril measurement are predominantly manual, operator-dependent, and prone to inconsistent reporting. To address this, we developed a semi-automated Fiji/ImageJ (IJ1) macro that standardizes fibril diameter measurements from two-dimensional TEMs. The macro uses a wand-based region-of-interest (ROI) detection strat

Two new species of Isospora (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) from skinks, Emoia spp. (Sauria: Scincidae), from Fiji and Papua New Guinea.

Between September and October 1991 and again during September 1992, skinks (Emoia spp.) were collected from various localities on Fiji and Papua New Guinea (PNG) and examined for coccidians. One of 4 (25%) De Vis' emo skinks (Emoia pallidiceps) from PNG harbored an undescribed species of Isospora in its feces. Oocysts of Isospora grinbikpelapalai n. sp. were ellipsoidal to subspheroidal, 18.1 × 14.9 (17-20 × 14-16) μm, with a bilayered wall and a length/width index (L/W) of 1.2. Both micropyle and oocyst residuum were absent, but a prominent polar granule was present. Sporocysts were ovoidal,
