Climate change-related migration and displacement: addressing the adaptation gap.

The growing intersection between climate change and human mobility argues that migration, displacement, and immobility are increasingly shaped by both sudden-onset and slow-onset climate hazards, alongside underlying social and governance vulnerabilities. Most climate-related mobility occurs within national borders and carries considerable implications for health, livelihoods, and urban systems. Global frameworks such as the Global Compact for Migration and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change have begun to acknowledge these dynamics; however, a major adaptation gap is identified at t

Breast cancer in men: risk factors with hormonal implications.

Cases included in a population-based case-control study of breast cancer in men were recruited from 10 geographic areas of the United States from 1983 to 1986. Controls, matched to cases on age and geographic area, were selected by random digit dialing for men under age 65 years and from Health Care Financing Administration files for older men. Results are based on responses from 227 cases and 300 controls to questions asked in a standardized personal interview. An increased risk of breast cancer was most strongly associated with undescended testes and was also related to orchiectomy, orchitis

Breast cancer management in middle-resource countries (MRCs): consensus statement from the Breast Health Global Initiative.

In middle resource countries (MRCs), cancer control programs are becoming a priority as the pattern of disease shifts from infectious diseases to non-communicable diseases such as breast cancer, the most common cancer among women in MRCs. The Middle Resource Scenarios Working Group of the BHGI 2010 Global Summit met to identify common issues and obstacles to breast cancer detection, diagnosis and treatment in MRCs. They concluded that breast cancer early detection programs continue to be important, should include clinical breast examination (CBE) with or without mammography, and should be coup

The Italian Twin Project: from the personal identification number to a national twin registry.

The unique opportunity given by the "fiscal code", an alphanumeric identification with demographic information on any single person residing in Italy, introduced in 1976 by the Ministry of Finance, allowed a database of all potential Italian twins to be created. This database contains up to now name, surname, date and place of birth and home address of about 1,300,000 "possible twins". Even though we estimated an excess of 40% of pseudo-twins, this still is the world's largest twin population ever collected. The database of possible twins is currently used in population-based studies on multip

[Requirements for the provision of healthcare to socially disadvantaged population groups: evaluation of 10 years of medical care provided to the homeless in Hanover].

In 2007, the German Federal Government introduced a general health insurance obligation, but there are still vulnerable groups such as poor and homeless people without access to medical care. Especially for social fringe groups, a visit to the doctor involves many obstacles. Ten years ago the project "Outreach medical care for homeless people and people threatened by homelessness in Hanover" was established in order to reduce those gaps in healthcare provision. A continuously conducted evaluation of the project shows that low-threshold consulting hours are accepted and the transition to medica

Anosognosia of financial ability in mild cognitive impairment.

OBJECTIVES: Although financial ability has been well-studied in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) using performance-based financial capacity assessment instruments, research is limited investigating everyday financial problems and declines in persons with AD and MCI and the insight of people with MCI to recognize that financial capacity declines are occurring. To address this gap in the research, we investigated everyday financial activities and skills in a sample of older adults representing the dementia spectrum. METHODS: Participants were 186 older adults in thre

Financial capacity of older African Americans with amnestic mild cognitive impairment.

This study investigated financial abilities of 154 patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) (116 white, 38 African American) using the Financial Capacity Instrument (FCI). In a series of linear regression models, we examined the effect of race on FCI performance and identified preliminary predictor variables that mediated observed racial differences on the FCI. Prior/premorbid abilities were identified. Predictor variables examined in the models included race and other demographic factors (age, education, sex), performance on global cognitive measures (MMSE, DRS-2 Total Score), history of

Gay marriage, same-sex parenting, and America's children.

Same-sex marriage, barely on the political radar a decade ago, is a reality in America. How will it affect the well-being of children? Some observers worry that legalizing same-sex marriage would send the message that same-sex parenting and opposite-sex parenting are interchangeable, when in fact they may lead to different outcomes for children. To evaluate that concern, William Meezan and Jonathan Rauch review the growing body of research on how same-sex parenting affects children. After considering the methodological problems inherent in studying small, hard-to-locate populations--problems t
