[Finger joint arthrodesis with the cup and cone technique : A simple and safe procedure].

BACKGROUND: Finger joint arthrosis frequently results from trauma, degenerative or inflammatory causes. When conservative treatment and joint-preserving procedures fail, arthrodesis remains a reliable surgical option to relieve pain and restore hand function. Among the various techniques, the cup and cone method has proven particularly effective due to its large cartilage-free surface area and ease of intraoperative axis correction. The aim of this study is to evaluate this based on the patient cohort of a supramaximum care provider. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 201 finge

Complex Dislocation of the Metacarpophalangeal Joint in the Index Finger of a Child: A Case Report.

CASE: The author reports a complex metacarpophalangeal joint dislocation in a 14-year-old adolescent boy with multiple failed closed reduction manipulations and unsuccessful open procedures. The patient underwent another surgical procedure through the same volar approach, and the joint was reduced along with the volar plate repair. The functional outcome at 1-year follow-up was excellent. CONCLUSIONS: Metacarpophalangeal dislocations of the index finger are rare in the pediatric population. The interposition of the volar plate is the significant barrier to reduction and the prime reason for u

[Extensor tendon injuries of fingers in the region of the metacarpophalangeal joint (zone V)].

Due to the exposed situation of the extension side of the metacarpophalangeal joint when the fingers are bent, injuries in this region are not uncommon. The extensor apparatus lies directly below the skin and the various parts can be easily injured. Due to the complex anatomical structure, the different clinical appearances and the various forms of treatment, injuries of the extensor tendons in the region of the metacarpophalangeal joint must be examined in a very differentiated manner. The not uncommonly occurring deviation phenomenon makes all injuries in zone V suspicious and special attent

Ultrasound findings of finger, wrist and knee joints in Mucopolysaccharidosis Type I.

INTRODUCTION: Musculoskeletal findings in MPS can progress after enzyme replacement. Our aim was to examine synovial recesses, tendons, retinacula and pulleys using ultrasonography for structural and inflammatory changes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The wrist, metacarpophalangeal (MCP), proximal and distal interphalangeal (PIP and DIP) joints, the finger flexor tendons and the knee including entheses of quadriceps and patella tendons were assessed clinically. Ultrasonography of the various synovial recesses of the wrist as well as the extensor retinaculum, carpal tunnel, MCP, PIP and DIP joints of

Risk factors for the progression of finger interphalangeal joint osteoarthritis: a systematic review.

Progressive hand interphalangeal joint (IPJ) osteoarthritis is associated with pain, reduced function and impaired quality of life. However, the evidence surrounding risk factors for IPJ osteoarthritis progression is unclear. Identifying risk factors for IPJ osteoarthritis progression may inform preventative strategies and early interventions to improve long-term outcomes for individuals at risk of IPJ osteoarthritis progression. The objectives of the study were to describe methods used to measure the progression of IPJ osteoarthritis and identify risk factors for IPJ osteoarthritis progressio

Interpositional Arthroplasty Using Mammary Capsule for Finger Joints: A Novel Technique.

Degenerative osteoarthritis frequently affects the hands, altering the movements; surgical therapy includes arthrodesis and arthroplasty. We report the case of a female patient who presented arthrosis in the hands, severe on the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joints, initially in her right index finger, and subsequently in the index and middle left fingers. At first, she received treatment in the PIP joint of the right index finger with a silicone implant; later on, she presented fracture of it and required replacement 8 years later. In the PIP joints of index and middle left fingers, treatmen

Management of fracture-dislocations of the little finger carpometacarpal joint: a systematic review.

Fracture-dislocations of the carpometacarpal joint (CMCJ) of the little ray involve dorsal subluxation of the metacarpal base and they may be associated with injury of neighbouring CMCJs. Different treatment options are described, with no clear consensus on their management. This study presents a systematic review of comparative studies describing the management of these injuries. A bespoke search strategy was applied across multiple databases. Results were screened against specified stepwise inclusion criteria and data were extracted independently by two authors with discrepancy resolution by

Pollicization of the index finger requiring secondary fusion of the new metacarpophalangeal joint.

In children with absent thumbs, some authors have stated that 'relative' contraindications of pollicization include severe fixed flexion contracture and instability of the proximal interphalangeal joint of the index finger. The current author does not consider severe proximal interphalangeal joint deformities of the index finger as a contraindication to pollicization; and hence these children are offered the procedure. A literature review did not reveal any study that specifically documents the outcome of pollicization in these cases. The current series included five children: four with severe

[Double dislocation of the interphalangeal joints of the little finger, a report of two cases].

Two cases of simultaneous traumatic dorsal dislocation of the interphalangeal joints of the little finger are described. In both cases the patients were managed by closed reduction and neighbour strapping followed by immediate mobilisation. At review, no complications were noted. The range of movements of all the affected joints was normal.

Early surgical treatment for collateral ligament rupture of metacarpophalangeal joints of the fingers.

PURPOSE: Thumb metacarpophalangeal (MCP) collateral ligament ruptures are well-known injuries but those occurring in the other fingers seem to be infrequent according to the literature. We undertook this study to evaluate the real incidence of this type of injury and the results of surgical treatment. METHOD: During a 2-year period care was taken to detect all the patients presenting to our emergency unit with a complete rupture of a collateral ligament of a finger and to perform surgery on them as soon as possible. Clinical reassessment was made regularly until maximal recovery and 2 years a

Synovial cyst of the pulp of the little finger--origin from the wrist joint.

Synovial cysts of the pulp of the little finger in three elderly patients were shown by arthrography to arise from leakage of synovial fluid from the wrist joint into the ulnar bursa and thence into the flexor synovial sheath in the digit. Distant as well as local sources of the contents of synovial cysts should be considered when the local anatomy permits communication between a degenerate joint and an adjacent tendon sheath.

Arthrodesis of the Proximal Interphalangeal Joint of the Finger-A Biomechanical Study of Primary Stability.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint of the finger often leads to global hand-function detriment. Different techniques for the arthrodesis of the proximal interphalangeal joint have been described that all lead to union in a reasonable percentage of patients and period of time. This biomechanical study aims to analyze and compare the primary stability of different techniques of arthrodesis to render postoperative immobilization unnecessary. METHODS: Arthrodeses of 40° of composite cylinders were tested with different techniques in four-point bending for stabi

Three-Fingered Soft Pneumatic Gripper Integrating Joint-Tuning Capability.

Compared with traditional rigid grippers, soft grippers are made of lightweight and soft materials and have the characteristics of flexible contact and strong adaptability, which are widely utilized to grasp fragile objects with complex contours and shapes. In this article, we design and fabricate a three-fingered stiffness-tunable soft gripper by integrating the joint-tuning capability. The soft fingers are composed of an internal bending actuator and an external fiber-jamming jacket, under an actuation of pneumatic pressure. Static and kinematic models are established to detect the bending a

Clinical significance of proximal interphalangeal joint pain in patients with trigger fingers.

We investigated incidence, clinical features and surgical outcomes of trigger finger accompanied by proximal interphalangeal joint pain. One-hundred and seventy-nine consecutive patients with trigger finger who had A1 pulley release were recruited. Forty-two patients (24%) complained of proximal interphalangeal joint pain at the time of surgery. Symptom duration was investigated, and tenderness at the proximal interphalangeal joint was palpated. Range of motion and pain score of the affected finger were measured pre- and post-operatively. Bone scan was performed to identify joint lesions. A co

Conservative interventions for treating hyperextension injuries of the proximal interphalangeal joints of the fingers.

BACKGROUND: Immobilisation and early motion (protected or unrestricted) are both used following hyperextension injuries to the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint of the finger. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of conservative interventions (non-surgical management) for treating hyperextension injuries of the proximal interphalangeal joints of the fingers. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Bone, Joint and Muscle Trauma Group Specialised Register (January 2012), the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (in The Cochrane Library 2012, Issue 1), MEDLINE (1946 to January Week 2

Prevalence of sesamoid bones in the interphalangeal joint of the thumb and fingers: a radiographic study.

The prevalence of sesamoid bones in the hands has been reported in some previous articles. Most of them, however, have reported sesamoid bones of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the hand and of the interphalangeal (IP) joint of the thumb. The present study investigates the prevalence of sesamoid bones of the IP joint of the thumb and fingers. A retrospective review of radiologic views of the IP joints in the thumb or fingers was performed, including a total of 650 patients (1,096 thumbs or fingers). Sesamoid bones were found in the IP joint of the thumb at 67% (212 of 318), while the index, m
