Finite element analysis of distraction osteogenesis with a new extramedullary internal distractor.

Distraction osteogenesis (DO) is a bone regenerative maneuver, which is conventionally done with external fixators and, more recently, with telescopic intramedullary nails. Despite the proven effectiveness, external approaches are intrusive to the patient's life while intramedullary nailing damages the growth plates, making them unsuitable for pediatric patients. An internal DO plate fixator (IDOPF) was developed for pediatric patients to address these limitations. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that the IDOPF can withstand a partial weight bearing scenario and create a

Fatigue Crack Growth Analysis under Constant Amplitude Loading Using Finite Element Method.

Damage tolerant design relies on accurately predicting the growth rate and path of fatigue cracks under constant and variable amplitude loading. ANSYS Mechanical R19.2 was used to perform a numerical analysis of fatigue crack growth assuming a linear elastic and isotropic material subjected to constant amplitude loading. A novel feature termed Separating Morphing and Adaptive Remeshing Technology (SMART) was used in conjunction with the Unstructured Mesh Method (UMM) to accomplish this goal. For the modified compact tension specimen with a varied pre-crack location, the crack propagation path,

Load Distribution in Dorsally-Angulated Distal Radius Deformity Using Finite Element Analysis.

PURPOSE: The load axis of the carpals is located on the volar side of the normal distal radius. A volar lunate facet fracture (VLFF) is exposed to volar-shearing stress, which can cause volar displacement of the carpus. A previous biomechanical study reported that the load at the scaphoid fossa was located more dorsally and the pressure at the lunate fossa decreased in a dorsally-angulated model. However, the distal radius load distribution for various volar tilts remains unclear. We speculate that if the volar tilt decreases, the load distribution moves dorsally and decreases the stress on th

Evaluating the biomechanical characteristics of cuffed-tracheostomy tubes using finite element analysis.

The objective of this study was to perform finite element analysis (FEA) of cuff inflation within an anatomically accurate model of an adult trachea in four different cuffed-tracheostomy tube designs. The leakage quantified by the distance between the cuff and trachea was largest for the Tracoe cuff and smallest for the Portex cuff. The smooth muscle stresses were greatest for the Portex and least for the Distal cuff, respectively. The proposed FEA model offers a promising approach to virtually evaluate the sealing efficacy of cuffed-tracheostomy tubes and the tracheal wall stresses induced by

[Research progress on finite element analysis of internal fixation for clavicular fracture].

Clavicular fracture is a common upper limb fracture. Because of its special anatomical structure, it directly affects the function of the shoulder joint. The different injury mechanisms of clavicular fracture affect the mechanical effect of internal fixation, so the selection of internal fixation method has been puzzling orthopedists. As a modern computer based mechanical analysis, finite element analysis application in the internal fixation of clavicular fracture can not only clarify the pathogenesis of fractures, biomechanical properties of internal fixators and complications of fractures, b

Biomechanical finite element analysis of superior endplate collapse after thoracolumbar fracture surgery.

BACKGROUND: In the follow-up after internal fixation of thoracolumbar fractures, the imaging of some patients shows "crater-like" collapse of the superior endplate of the injured vertebra, with variable collapse area and depth, even involving the anterior edge of the vertebral body. Though many papers had described the phenomenon, but nearly no one did biomechanical research about this. So we did this research in a creative way by using finite element model. METHODS: A healthy male volunteer was selected. The 64-slice thin-section spiral computed tomography images at the level of T11-L3 were

Behavior under Load of A Human Shoulder: Finite Element Simulation and Analysis.

Most musculoskeletal injuries occur during the work routines in different areas, due to repetitive and sustained movements, they are often located in the shoulder. For workers in the building sector, the repetitive movements and displacements occur under load and unnatural postures of the shoulder joint. For this reason, this study aims to model in 3D the biological components which form the shoulder joint for the later finite element analysis. Three cases with different loads have been considered for this study. Due to a linear and isotropic joint approach it has been possible to evaluate the

Inducing therapeutic hypothermia via selective brain cooling: a finite element modeling analysis.

Therapeutic hypothermia is a treatment method to reduce brain injuries after stroke, especially for cerebral ischemia. This study investigates in the temperature distribution of the head within selective brain cooling (SBC). Anatomically accurate geometries based on CT images of head and neck regions are used to develop the 3D geometry and physical model for the finite element modeling. Two cooling methods, the direct head surface cooling strategy and the combination cooling strategy of both head and neck, are evaluated to analyze the inducing hypothermia. The results show that for direct head

Finite element analysis and design of an interspinous device using topology optimization.

Recently, interspinous stabilization with Coflex-F implant has become an alternative to treat lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). However, little attention focused on modifying the structure of the device to obtain the better clinic application. The purpose of this study was to design a new interspinous implant using topology optimization methods and evaluate its biomechanical performance. The finite element models of healthy lumbar spine and surgical lumbar spine with Coflex-F and Coflex-NEW (the new designed implant) were constructed. Finite element analysis was applied to each of the three models

A Three-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis of Displaced Intra-Articular Calcaneal Fractures.

A better understanding of displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures, their effect on joint mechanics, and the relationship between altered mechanics and osteoarthritis could aid in the development or refinement of treatment methods. Finite element modeling is accepted as the reference standard for evaluating joint contact stresses. The objective of the present study was to analyze the in vivo joint mechanical data from finite element modeling for normal and injured subtalar joints. A 3-dimensional model of the ankle-hindfoot was developed and validated. Both height loss and width increases
