Early Adolescents' Knowledge and Behavior with Firearms: How Experience, Parents, and Safety Training Contribute to Behavior.

Unintentional pediatric firearm-related injuries constitute a public health challenge. This cross-sectional research study examines how children's experience with firearms, parent-level supervision and training, and youth exposure to firearms is associated with youths' knowledge about and behavior with firearms. One hundred sixty-three children aged 10-12, all with firearm exposure, and their parents participated. Self-report data from youth and parents on youth firearm experience and knowledge; family firearm use and storage; and how children were supervised and trained to use firearms served

Temporal trends and geographic variations in mortality rates from tobacco and firearms in the United States.

We explored temporal trends and geographic variations in United States of America (US) mortality rates from smoking and firearms from 1999 to 2019. To do so, we used the publicly available Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Wide Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (WONDER) with Multiple Cause of Death files from 1999 to 2019. Using age-specific rates and ArcGIS Pro Advanced software for Optimized Hot Spot Analyses from Esri, we generated maps of statistically significant spatial clusters with 90-99% confidence intervals with the Getis-Ord Gi* statistic for mortality fr

Lead toxicosis and trace element levels in wild birds and mammals at a firearms training facility.

In May 1999, lead poisoning was diagnosed in a yellow-rumped warbler (Dendroica coronata) and a gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) found at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC), Glynn County, GA, based on detection of 6.2 and 90.0 ppm wet weight (WW) lead in the liver of the warbler and squirrel, respectively. From October 21--26, 1999, 72 wild animals (37 mammals and 35 birds), comprised of 22 different species, were collected from a 24-ha area surrounding the FLETC outdoor firearms shooting range complex to evaluate exposure to lead and other trace elements. Ten animals were

Pelvifemoral external fixation for the treatment of open fractures of the proximal femur caused by firearms.

Seventeen patients with open fractures of the upper third of the femur were treated using a pelvifemoral external fixation device. All of them had grade III open fractures resulting from high-velocity missile and explosive injuries with massive foreign body contamination. Sciatic nerve injury was present in five (29.4%); abdominal viscera and thoracic wall injuries were present in two patients (11.8%). There were no major arterial injuries. Full weight bearing was allowed after clinical and radiological bone healing (average 11.5 months). Chronic osteitis with fistula and sequestra developed i

The consequences of community exposure to firearm homicide for adolescent substance use.

In areas with high levels of violence, not just the individuals involved but entire communities experience harm. Acts of violence in the community that a young person did not witness or experience directly can still have consequences for their health behaviors. Using survey data from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study merged with the Gun Violence Archive (N = 3042), we investigate associations between community exposure to firearm homicide and adolescent substance use. Results indicate that exposure to a local firearm homicide in the past 180 days is associated with 1.56 higher o

Association of Housing Instability With Firearm Homicides in Major US Cities.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple social determinants of health have been linked to gun violence; however, the specific role of housing instability (HI) in contributing to firearm homicide rates remains underexplored. We hypothesized that greater HI would be associated with higher firearm homicide rates. METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed 2021 firearm homicide data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention across the 50 largest US metropolitan statistical areas. Measures of HI were collected from the National Low-Income Housing Coalition, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Developm

Indicators of potential disability among pediatric firearm injury survivors.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric firearm injury represents an increasing national crisis. While many injuries are fatal, a greater proportion of children survive, often facing significant long-term disabilities. This study aims to characterize the outcomes of pediatric firearm injury and identify predictors of persisting symptoms. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients aged 0-17 years treated for firearm injuries at three Level I trauma centers in a major U.S. city from 2018 to 2020. Data was collected from trauma registries, medical charts, and public records, including demograp

Diagnostic Challenges in Uncommon Firearm Injury Cases: A Multidisciplinary Approach.

Background: Firearm wounds tend to have a precise pattern. Despite this, real-world case presentations can present uncertain elements, sometimes deviating from what is considered standard, and present uncommon features that are difficult for forensic pathologists and ballistic experts to explain. Methods: A retrospective analysis of autopsy reports from the Institute of Legal Medicine, University of Catania, covering 2019-2023, included 348 judicial inspections and 378 autopsies performed as part of the institute's overall activities. Among these, seventeen cases of firearm deaths were identif

Examining predictors of suicide by firearm in young, middle, and late adulthood.

INTRODUCTION: Suicide remains a leading cause of death in the U.S., and firearms are one of the most lethal methods of suicide. This study examines personal and contextual factors that predict suicide with a firearm compared to other methods across stages of adulthood. METHODS: Data on adult suicide decedents from 2009 to 2019 were obtained from Colorado's National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) data (N = 11,512). The dataset includes incident and person characteristics collected by law enforcement and coroners. Zip code level data were integrated from the American Community Survey.

Evaluation of hidden hearing loss in normal-hearing firearm users.

Some noise exposures resulting in temporary threshold shift (TTS) result in cochlear synaptopathy. The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate a human population that might be at risk for noise-induced cochlear synaptopathy (i.e., "hidden hearing loss"). Participants were firearm users who were (1) at-risk for prior audiometric noise-induced threshold shifts, given their history of firearm use, (2) likely to have experienced complete threshold recovery if any prior TTS had occurred, based on this study's normal-hearing inclusion criteria, and (3) not at-risk for significant age-rel

Handcrafted firearm suicide: About the unusual use of a mole gun.

The body of a man was found in a workshop at the back of his home, a metal pipe embedded in his chest. In the immediate vicinity of the body, among various tools, was a machine containing a holster hit of lead shot evoking a mole-trap-type "taupe gun" (mole gun). The findings at the scene and the presence of a metal tube, sinkers, and a flock in the chest are in favour of the use of a homemade firearm. The autopsy and CT scan revealed atypical ballistic thoracic trauma responsible for a dilaceration of both the heart and thoracic aorta that caused the death. The autopsy also found a contused w

Postmortem Computed Tomography in Firearm Homicides: A Retrospective Case Series.

Postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) is integrated into the evaluation of decedents in several American medical examiner offices and medicolegal death investigative centers in many other countries. We retrospectively investigated the value of PMCT in a series of firearm homicide cases from a statewide centralized medical examiner's office that occurred during 2016. Autopsies were performed or supervised by board-certified forensic pathologists who reviewed the PMCT scans prior to autopsy. PMCT scans were re-evaluated by a forensic radiologist blinded to the autopsy findings and scored by body
