Beyond lipids: the role of omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil in the prevention of coronary heart disease.

Omega-3 fatty acid therapy shows great promise in the secondary prevention of coronary artery disease. A meta-analysis of recent omega-3 trials shows reductions of coronary heart disease mortality of 36% (95% CI, 20%-50%; P<0.001) and total mortality of 17% (95% CI, 0%-32%; P=0.046). Some of the potential mechanisms for cardiovascular protection include a reduction in cardiac arrhythmias and plaque stabilization. Since the publication of the landmark GISSI-Prevenzione trial, there have been three major intermediate cardiovascular endpoint studies in patients with implantable cardioverter defib

Effects of new fish oil derivative on fatty acid phospholipid-membrane pattern in a group of Crohn's disease patients.

Fish oil has been recently proposed as a possible effective treatment in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD); however, a lot of annoying side effects (ie, belching, halitosis, diarrhea, etc) affect patient compliance. We carried out a study of patient tolerance in a group of Crohn's disease (CD) patients with a new fish oil derivative consisting of 500-mg capsules of eicosapentaenoic-docosahexaenoic (EPA 40%-DHA 20%), a free fatty acid mixture (Purepa), and we also evaluated its incorporation into phospholipids, both in plasma and in red cell membranes. Five groups of 10 CD patients in remission

Familial high-density-lipoprotein deficiency causing corneal opacities (fish eye disease) in a family of Dutch descent.

Fish eye disease (FED) is an extremely rare familial disorder characterized by severe HDL deficiency and extensive corneal opacities. This disorder appears to be a variant of familial lecithin: cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) deficiency in which the enzyme remains partly active yet the ability of the enzyme to esterify cholesterol in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) has been lost. The rarity of this disorder has limited advances in our understanding of the pathophysiology of the HDL deficiency. However, we here describe the clinical and biochemical presentation of a family with FED who are of

Natural Co-Infections of Aeromonas veronii and Yellow Catfish Calicivirus (YcCV) in Ascites Disease Outbreaks in Cultured Yellow Catfish: An Emerging Fish Disease in China.

Yellow catfish is one of the most important aquaculture species in China, with an annual output of 565,000 tons. Between May and July 2022, the farmed yellow catfish experienced an unusually high mortality rate in an aquaculture farm next to Futou Lake in Hubei, China. Diseased fish exhibited symptoms including ascites, skin ulcers, and bleeding in the head, oral cavity, and lower jaw base. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequence analyses confirmed the co-infection of Yellow Catfish Calicivirus (YcCV) and Aeromonas veronii in the diseased fish. Transmission electron microscopy exposed abu

Improvement in Intestinal-Failure-Associated Liver Disease by Using Parenteral Fish Oil as Monotherapy: Case-Based Review of the Literature.

Intestinal-failure-associated liver disease (IFALD) is a common complication of prolonged parenteral nutrition (PN). Risk factors for IFALD include clinical features, as well as medical interventions, and its management was initially based on the decrease or interruption of parenteral nutrition while increasing enteral nutrition. However, the tolerance of full enteral nutrition in children with intestinal failure may require prolonged intestinal rehabilitation over a period of years. As a consequence, infants unable to wean from PN are prone to develop end-stage liver disease. We describe the

Beneficial effects of fish-oil supplements on lipids, lipoproteins, and lipoprotein lipase in patients with glycogen storage disease type I.

Glycogen storage disease type I (GSD-I) is frequently complicated by severe hyperlipoproteinemia and the increased potential risk of premature atherosclerosis. The effects of fish-oil supplementation [MaxEPA, 10 g.(1.73 m2)-1 for 3 mo] were investigated prospectively in seven hyperlipoproteinemic patients with GSD-I. Hypertriglyceridemia and hypercholesterolemia improved after 3 mo of fish-oil treatment, decreasing 49% (P < 0.005) and 23%, respectively. This was accompanied by a reduction in both low-density-lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (25%, P < 0.03) and apolipoprotein B (40%) and by increa

Effects of Dietary Adjustment and Fish Oil on Lipid Metabolism, Inflammation, and Serum LPS in Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.

We compared the therapeutic effects of dietary adjustment and fish oil in rats with experimental non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) induced by high-fat diet. The NAFLD rats were either maintained on high-fat diet, or transferred from high-fat diet to normal diet, or received a diet with lard replaced with fish oil. Control rats received normal diet throughout the experiment. The liver coefficient, blood lipids, activities of transaminases, and the severity of hepatic steatosis in NAFLD rats were improved by both dietary adjustment and fish oil (p < 0.05). Dietary adjustment led to a sig

An end-to-end dual backbone framework for UAV fish disease detection using optimized GateHCO feature fusion mechanism.

Early detection of fish disease is of great significance to inhibit the transmissible disease. Nowadays, computer vision and deep learning methods serve as the most innovative method to identify fish disease. However, most vision technologies to detect fish disease are limited to 2D objects which focus on the feature extraction from images. The dynamic information in the videos are not fully utilized. In this study, we developed a novel hybrid deep learning method and established a dual-backbone architecture for fish disease detection. The model can both extract static appearance features and

Isolation of a new Streptomyces virginiae W18 against fish pathogens and its effect on disease resistance mechanism of Carassius auratus.

The Streptomyces virginiae strain W18 was screened from soil, which exhibited broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against fish pathogens. Safety assays showed that strain W18 had no toxicity to fish. Additionally, strain W18 promoted the growth performance of Carassius auratus after feeding in feed mixed with bacteria for one month. Moreover, the activities of AKP, ACP, and SOD in the serum of C. auratus were significantly increased, while the activity of LZM did not greatly change. The utility of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis in diagnosing graft versus host disease following orthotopic liver transplant.

Graft versus host disease (GVHD) following liver transplant occurs in 0.1-2% of patients and portends a poor prognosis. Affected organs include skin, the gastrointestinal tract and bone marrow. We present the case of a 61 year old female who developed skin rash and pancytopenia following sex-mismatched second liver transplant for autoimmune hepatitis. Initial skin biopsies revealed vacuolar interface change, keratinocyte necrosis and a mild mononuclear superficial perivascular infiltrate. The bone marrow was markedly hypocellular with scattered CD8 positive T lymphocytes. FISH analysis reveale

Long-Term Fish Oil Lipid Emulsion Use in Children With Intestinal Failure-Associated Liver Disease [Formula: see text].

BACKGROUND: Fish oil lipid emulsion (FOLE) and multidisciplinary care for infants with intestinal failure (IF) have been associated with reduced morbidity and mortality due to IF-associated liver disease (IFALD). With increased survival, a greater proportion of infants with IF are now able to remain on parenteral nutrition (PN) in the long term. The purpose of this study was to examine outcomes in children with IFALD who have required long-term PN and FOLE therapy due to chronic IF. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A review of prospectively collected data was performed for children with IFALD who requi

FISH-ing for answers: Can genomic arrays add to our understanding of disease biology in low-risk chronic lymphocytic leukaemia?

Patients with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia can have an indolent or aggressive clinical course. Current guidelines recommend performing immunoglobin heavy chain testing, four-colour probe fluorescence in situ hybridization testing and mutational analysis for TP53 mutations as part of routine prognostic testing to determine if high-risk genomic features are present. Rigolin et al. demonstrate that genomic microarray testing can identify high-risk genomic features in patients deemed low risk by current testing standards and is independently associated with shorter time to first treatment in thei

First report of Crassiphiala sp. (Trematoda: Diplostomidae) as an etiological agent of black spot disease in commercial ornamental fish from Brazil.

Ornamental fish are becoming increasingly popular, but the lack of knowledge regarding their various diseases is a major challenge. Skin diseases commonly found in freshwater fish include black spot disease (BSD), which is characterized by melanin deposits around the metacercariae of some trematode species. Since BSD remains poorly understood, this study describes an outbreak of BSD in Etroplus maculatus raised in outdoor ponds at a Brazilian fish farm. Metacercariae samples were collected, examined, and subjected to molecular phylogenetic analysis. The parasites were conspecific to an unnamed
