Thirty six patients apparently envenomed by the scorpion fish Scorpaena plumieri, consulting to the ambulatory emergency of a fishing and turistic town Adícora, state Falcón, Venezuela, from December 2006 to April 2007, allowed us to carry out a descriptive analysis of the clinical, epidemiology and treatment of this envenoming. The paper gives the results of observations of 1558 patients before and after tourist travels to tropical countries and 368 individuals visiting the north areas of the Russian Federation. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: SCUBA diving is a widely popular activity in Turkey, surrounded by seas on three sides. While most marine creatures in these waters are harmless, a few poses significant risks, necessitating awareness and precautions for divers' safety. Unlike other sea snakes, Aipysurus eydouxii feeds exclusively on fish eggs. This unusual feeding habit prompted us to search for unique transcripts in their venom glands. In the present study we expressed a novel cysteine-rich secretory protein containing 94 amino acid residues that was identified in its cDNA library. Two cases of stingray injury which caused extensive tissue necrosis are reported. In one patient, the wound was allegedly inflicted by Dasyatis kuhlii, the blue-spotted stingray; in the other, by D. sephen, the cowtail ray. After excision of necrotic tissue, the wounds healed rapidly and without complications. Wound exploration and debridement of dead tissue are indicated in at least some stingray injuries, particularly when first-aid measures, such as early immersion in hot water or irrigation of the wound have not been carried out.

The hypothesis that glutamate is the afferent transmitter in the acoustico-lateralis receptors was examined in Plotosus electroreceptors. JSTX , a spider toxin known to specifically block glutamate receptors, irreversibly abolished afferent impulse discharges induced by iontophoretically applied glutamate, whereas those induced synaptically by focal stimulation of receptor cells were little affected. Such differential blocking effects by JSTX , complementary to other biochemical data, further provide pharmacological evidence against the glutamate hypothesis.

Epidemiological features as reflected by 101 patients with unequivocal sea-snake bite received in north-west Malaya are reviewed. Enhydrina schistosa caused over half the bites, including seven of the eight fatal bites. It is the most dangerous sea-snake to man. Over 90 per cent of the victims were male and 80 of the 101 patients were fishermen bitten at their job. Most victims were bitten on the lower limb through treading on the snake, and this resulted in more cases of serious poisoning than upper limb bites (caused through handling nets, sorting fish and so on). This study presents the first report of purification of natterin-like protein (Nlp) in a non-venomous fish. The peptide identities of purified cod Nlp were confirmed through LC-MSMS and matched to a cod expressed sequence tag (EST). All physicians must be educated in treating injuries incurred when a diver comes into contact with any dangerous marine life. Stinging invertebrates are the most commonly encountered dangerous marine animals. Venomous vertebrate marine animals are less common than stinging invertebrates and easier to recognize. However, they may be much more deadly. Sharks pose the greatest danger to divers. However, bites from other marine animals can be painful, become infected and require extensive medical treatment.

A patient with systemic lupus erythematosus had a protracted skin infection with Mycobacterium marinum after a puffer fish sting. Disseminated cutaneous and synovial disease was associated with clinically active systemic lupus erythematosus two years after the initial infection. The infection was poorly responsive to multiple antituberculous regimens. Hematogenous spread of infection was the likely route of dissemination.
