Elizabethkingia anophelis has recently gained global attention and is emerging as a cause of life-threatening nosocomial infections. The present study aimed to investigate the association between antimicrobial resistance and the ability to form biofilm among E. anophelis isolated from hospitalized patients in China. Over 10 years, a total of 197 non-duplicate E. anophelis strains were collected. Antibiotic susceptibility was determined by the standard agar dilution method as a reference assay according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute. The biofilm formation ability was assess

For the local health service, Elizabethkingia meningoseptica remains a relatively new and little-known pathogen, whereas in many countries of Europe, Asia and other continents it is considered as a potential causative agent of nosocomial infections, especially in premature infants and immunocompromised patients. An analysis of the literature data, as well as our results indicate that E. meningoseptica should be considered as a potential pathogen, which is characterized by a unique profile of susceptibility to antimicrobial agents (AMP) and disinfectants. This article presents the results of a

We report a case of a 77-year old male who developed a fulminant erysipelas and sepsis, caused by Myroides odoratimimus. Selecting the optimal antibiotic therapy for the treatment of infections with M. odoratimimus is challenging due to limited clinical experience with this micro-organism and its reported multidrug-resistance. Review of previous studies concerning in vitro antibacterial susceptibility and clinical experience with M. odoratimimus resulted in six case reports describing bacteremia, soft tissue and bone infections, pneumonia and urinary tract infections. In vitro susceptibility t

Abstract A challenge to selectively breeding fish populations for improved disease resistance in aquaculture is an incomplete understanding of how artificial selection affects innate immunity at the host-pathogen level. The objective of this study was to determine whether Rainbow Trout Oncorhynchus mykiss bred for differential susceptibility to bacterial cold-water disease exhibited altered tissue damage and cellular inflammatory response following experimental challenge with Flavobacterium psychrophilum. Fish from disease-resistant (ARS-Fp-R) and disease-susceptible (ARS-Fp-S) lines were expe

INTRODUCTION: Despite being a bacterial pathogen with devastating consequences, Tenacibaculum maritimum's pathogenesis is not fully understood. The aim of the present study was to elucidate if different inoculation routes (intraperitoneal - i.p - injection and bath challenge - known to induce mortality) can induce tenacibaculosis (i.e., using the same T. maritimum inoculum), as well as evaluate the short-term immune response of European sea bass (D. labrax). Additionally, the host response against i.p. injection of extracellular products (ECPs) was also studied.
METHODS: Fish were i.p. challe

OBJECTIVE: Columnaris disease is a leading cause of disease-related losses in the catfish industry of the southeastern United States. The term "columnaris-causing bacteria" (CCB) has been coined in reference to the four described species that cause columnaris disease: Flavobacterium columnare, F. covae, F. davisii, and F. oreochromis. Historically, F. columnare, F. covae, and F. davisii have been isolated from columnaris disease cases in the catfish industry; however, there is a lack of knowledge of which CCB species are most prevalent in farm-raised catfish. The current research objectives we

A recently developed attenuated vaccine for Flavobacterium columnare has been demonstrated to provide superior protection for channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, against genetically diverse columnaris isolates. We were interested in examining the mechanisms of this protection by comparing transcriptional responses to F. columnare challenge in vaccinated and unvaccinated juvenile catfish. Accordingly, 58 day old fingerling catfish (28 days post-vaccination or unvaccinated control) were challenged with a highly virulent F. columnare isolate (BGSF-27) and gill tissues collected pre-challenge (0

A 47-year-old man presented to our emergency department complaining of acute ocular pain and redness of his left eye. Ophthalmological antecedents included use of semi-rigid contact lens and primary open-angle glaucoma. Slit-lamp examination revealed a small central corneal ulcer associated with stromal inflammatory infiltrate. Scraping from the corneal ulcer was positive for Elizabethkingia meningoseptica. He was empirically treated with topical 0.5% levofloxacin and 0.3% gentamicin, and five weeks later the infection had resolved. In this case report we describe the uncommon association betw

Giant scale insects (Drosicha: Coccoldea: Monophlebidae) were investigated for their symbiotic organs and bacterial endosymbionts. Two types of bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequences, flavobacterial and enterobacterial, were consistently detected in D. corpulenta and D. pinicola. The former sequences formed a compact clade in the Bacteroidetes, allied to the symbionts of cushion and armored scales. The latter sequences formed a robust clade in the gamma-Proteobacteria, allied to enteric bacteria like Enterobacter aerogenes and Escherichia coli. Another type of 16S sequence derived from Wolbachia wa

Rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), sea trout, Salmo trutta L., and Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., were experimentally infected with Flavobacterium psychrophilum in order to evaluate any species differences in susceptibility to the bacterium. Furthermore, differences in pathological changes and distribution of the bacteria in internal organs were studied. The bacteria were injected intraperitoneally in two doses, high dose (Hd) 1 x 10(7) colony forming units (CFU) fish(-1) and low dose (Ld) 1 x 10(6) CFU fish(-1). The mortalities in the Ld groups varied between 0 and 7.5% and in th

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of establishing a population of the green microalgae Chlorella sp. on different key aspects of a biofloc culture of Penaeus vannamei in comparison with those obtained with a commercial probiotic. The aspects evaluated were shrimp zootechnical performance, nutritional composition of biofloc and microbial populations of shrimp intestinal microbiota and biofloc. Four treatments were tested: two of them included Chlorella sp. alone (M) or in combination to a bacterial probiotic (MP), while the other two included only the probiotic (P) or none of them (C). T

Riemerella anatipestifer infection is a critical disease that is a major threat to the poultry industry worldwide. The adhesion and invasion of host cells are key steps in the primary stages of bacterial infection. However, the outer membrane proteins that mediate these events in R. anatipestifer are poorly characterized. In this study, the PorV and PosF proteins, as well as the previously described OMP71 protein, were identified as important mediators of the adhesion and invasion of duck embryo fibroblast (DEF) cells by R. anatipestifer. Affinity chromatography-based surface proteomics was us

Riemerella anatipestifer (RA) is an important avian pathogen with considerable impact on poultry production worldwide. However, the diagnosis of RA infections may be difficult, mainly due to problems with unequivocal differentiation of RA from other Flavobacteriaceae and a lack of standardized methods and reagents. The aim of the present study was therefore to complement the routine diagnostic strategies for RA by design and evaluation of alternative diagnostic tools. We designed and validated a new RA-specific polymerase chain reaction assay, which proved to be a valuable tool for the identif

Misidentification of Brucella species from clinical specimens using commercial bacterial identification systems is a recurring problem. An isolate from a bacterimic patient was identified as Bergeyella zoohelcum by MicroScan Walk-Away (Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics Inc., West Sacramento, CA, USA) and as Brucella melitensis by Vitek 2 system (bioMérieux Inc., Durham, NC, USA). Because of this identification ambiguity by the two automated bacterial identification systems we performed 16S rRNA sequencing and serotyping of the isolate and confirmed it as a Brucella spp. Combining the sequence dat

Probiotics are increasingly recognized as sustainable alternatives to antibiotics in aquaculture. This study evaluated the viability and disease-mitigating potential of the candidate probiotic Lelliotia amnigena strain C6-6 in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. Viability was assessed under varying storage temperatures (-15, 4, and 17°C), time intervals (up to 24 wk), and feed preparation methods. Results showed that colder storage, particularly at -15°C, preserved higher concentrations of C6-6, while viability rapidly declined at 17°C. The viability of C6-6 over time was enhanced in feeds prep

Riemerella anatipestifer (R. anatipestifer) poses a serious threat to poultry, leading to substantial economic losses to the poultry industry. The escalating prevalence of antibiotic resistance in R. anatipestifer underscores the urgent need for novel therapeutic agents. In this study, we demonstrated that Sophoraflavanone G (SFG), a lavandulylated flavanone derived from Sophora flavescens, exhibits rapid bactericidal activity against R. anatipestifer in vitro and shows a low propensity for inducing drug resistance. Mechanistic studies indicate that SFG binds to phosphatidylglycerol, compromis
