Meptazinol and pentazocine: plasma catecholamines and other effects in healthy volunteers.

1. This double-blind, random-order study was designed to compare the clinical effects and the plasma catecholamine responses after i.v. administration of meptazinol at doses 0.7 and 1.4 mg kg-1, pentazocine at doses 0.3 and 0.6 mg kg-1 and saline placebo to six healthy volunteers. 2. Mean arterial pressure was not affected by either drug. Heart rate showed slight drug-related changes. Respiratory rate fell slightly with both drugs, but independently of dose. 3. The critical flicker fusion threshold-test and Maddox wing readings could both clearly differentiate active drugs from placebo. Meptaz

[Psychological changes in multiple sclerosis].

In dealing with our multiple sclerosis (MS) patients concomitant and consecutive symptoms of a psychical nature also deserve appropriate consideration in addition to the variety of somatic symptoms. In the following synopsis, numerous and in part divergent findings - observations, hospital statistics as well as psychodiagnostic test results - concerning the psychopathology of MS are presented. A multiplicity of mental changes, depending upon the variability of the disease process and its course, can be noticed. Over the past century euphoria was long regarded as the psychopathological trait of

Multiple sclerosis: abnormalities in luminance, chromatic, and temporal function at multiple retinal sites.

Visual function was assessed in a group of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and in a group of matched normal controls. In these patients the disease was relatively mild. For each subject, measures of a range of psychophysical visual functions were carried out at multiple sites in each eye. Previous reports have only included some of these functions. Here, luminance threshold, two-flash resolution, perceptual latency, luminance critical flicker frequency (CFF), and chromatic CFF were all measured. Variabilities of these functions and correlation between chromatic and luminance CFFs were al

Some aspects of the effects of clobazam on human psychomotor performance.

1 Three studies are described, the first being a comparison of the effects of acute night-time doses of clobazam 20 mg, amylobarbitone sodium 100 mg, nitrazepam 5 mg and placebo, on choice reaction time, critical flicker fusion (CFF) and stabilometer performance. Clobazam improved early morning performance on a choice reaction test, in contrast to the other two active drugs. 2 Repeated doses of clobazam 10 mg three times daily, chlordiazepoxide 10 mg three times daily and diazepam 5 mg three times daily were given for 5 days. Again clobazam did not produce any impairment of psychomotor perform

An insect-scale artificial visual-olfactory bionic compound eye.

Compound eyes feature unique optical structures and high-efficiency image processing. The opto-olfactory nervous system of Drosophila has the characteristics of lightweight and low power consumption. Significant efforts have been dedicated to the design and manufacturing of artificial compound eye system. However, it is still challenging to construct a bionic visual-olfactory compound eye microsystem with sensitive photoelectric response and accurate olfactory perception in insect-scale, mimicking the biological multimodal fusion decision-making mechanism. Here, we report a miniature appositio

Maintenance time of sedative effects after an intravenous infusion of diazepam: a guide for endoscopy using diazepam.

AIM: To examine whether the sedative effects assessed by psychomotor tests would depend on the cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2C19 genotypes after an infusion regimen of diazepam commonly used for gastrointestinal endoscopy in Japan. METHODS: Fifteen healthy Japanese volunteers consisting of three different CYP2C19 genotype groups underwent a critical flicker fusion test, an eye movement analysis and a postural sway test as a test for physical sedative effects, and a visual analog scale (VAS) symptom assessment method as a test for mental sedative effects during the 336 h period after the intravenous

Saccadic eye movements analysis as a measure of drug effect on central nervous system function.

Peak velocity (PSV) and duration (SD) of horizontal saccadic eye movements are demonstrably under the control of specific brain stem structures. Experimental and clinical evidence suggest the existence of an immediate premotor system for saccade generation located in the paramedian pontine reticular formation (PPRF). Effects on saccadic eye movements have been studied in normal volunteers with barbiturates, benzodiazepines, amphetamine and ethanol. On two occasions computer analysis of PSV, SD, saccade reaction time (SRT) and saccade accuracy (SA) was carried out in comparison with more tradit

Interactions of flicker and motion.

We present a series of novel observations about interactions between flicker and motion that lead to three distinct perceptual effects. We use the term flicker to describe alternating changes in a stimulus' luminance or color (i.e. a circle that flickers from black to white and visa-versa). When objects flicker, three distinct phenomena can be observed: (1) Flicker Induced Motion (FLIM) in which a single, stationary object, appears to move when it flickers at certain rates; (2) Flicker Induced Motion Suppression (FLIMS) in which a moving object appears to be stationary when it flickers at cert

Midazolam and flumazenil in the anaesthetic management of trigeminal nerve thermocoagulation.

A technique is described for the anaesthetic management of trigeminal nerve thermocoagulation by administration of repeated doses of midazolam and flumazenil. "Wake-up" times after administration of flumazenil in 20 patients were shorter than those reported during spontaneous recovery from methohexitone or propofol anaesthesia. The midazolam dose required for a second phase of sedation after antagonism of the first with flumazenil was significantly less than that for the first phase of sedation. There was no evidence of postoperative resedation. Reversal of sedation was associated with an incr

Reduction of alcohol-induced performance impairment by prior ingestion of food.

The study examined the effectiveness of eating a meal prior to drinking alcohol as a means of reducing both peak blood alcohol level (BAL) and alcohol-induced performance impairment. In a separate-groups design, 133 male volunteers either fasted or received a standard meal of fixed calorific value and composition. Alcohol was then administered as placebo or at doses to achieve a BAL of 0, 20, 40 or 80 mg/100 ml. Subjects performed a dual task of primary tracking and secondary reaction time, short-term memory, five-choice reaction time and critical flicker fusion. Alcohol significantly impaired

Immediate and overnight effects of zopiclone 7.5 mg and nitrazepam 5 mg with ethanol, on psychomotor performance and memory in healthy volunteers.

The effects of ethanol (0.2-0.4 g/kg) taken in conjunction with a single nocturnal dose of zopiclone 7.5 mg or nitrazepam 5 mg, on the early morning performance were investigated by means of psychomotor tests in 9 female volunteers. While there was no noticeable difference in the Choice Reaction Time (CRT) for any of the drug-ethanol combinations and ethanol alone, the zopiclone combination appeared to be initially more sedative in the Critical Flicker Fusion test (CFF). Both drug combinations impaired short-term memory and induced retrograde amnesia to the same extent, although only the nitra

Effects of ketanserin and haloperidol on prepulse inhibition of the acoustic startle (eyeblink) response and the N1/P2 auditory evoked response in man.

Contraction of the orbicularis oculi muscle in response to a sudden loud sound (acoustic startle response) and the N1/P2 component of the auditory evoked potential are both attenuated when a brief low-intensity stimulus is presented 30-500 ms before the 'startle-eliciting' stimulus (prepulse inhibition). Here, we report the effects of the serotonin (5-HT)2 receptor antagonist ketanserin and the D2 dopamine receptor blocking antipsychotic drug haloperidol on these responses. Fifteen males (aged 18-35 years) participated in four sessions at 7-day intervals, in which they received ketanserin 20 m

[Oscillatory potentials in the diagnosis of glaucoma optic neuropathy].

This study proposes new, original methods for diagnosis of glaucoma optic neuropathy--oscillatory potentials (OP) in an electroretinogram (ERG) to a long-term stimulus and in the 30 Hz flicker ERG (with identification of OP at frequencies of 80 to 120 Hz). Twenty-three patients (46 years) aged 40 to 65 years with primary open-angle glaucoma were examined. OP in the 30 Hz flicker ERG (01 and 02) and that in the ERG ON-response to a long-term stimulus have a similar origin and are linked with the light ON-channels of the retinal cone system. O1, O2, and 03 in the 30 Hz flicker ERG reflect the fu

The magnocellular deficit hypothesis in dyslexia: a review of reported evidence.

Many reports suggest that the majority of dyslexic children have a measurable disorder of the fast processing pathway of the visual system. This pathway is believed to extend from the retina to the occipital and parietal areas of the brain, and is referred to as the magnocellular (M) or transient pathway. Evidence in support of the magnocellular deficit theory comes from several sources, but is not totally consistent. Histological studies have revealed shrinkage and disorganisation of M cells in the lateral geniculate nucleus of dyslexic subjects. Psychophysical investigations of visual persis

Sensitivity to temporal luminance modulation in congenital nystagmus.

Uniform field temporal contrast sensitivity functions were compared for 10 subjects with congenital nystagmus (seven idiopathic, three with albinism) and 10 normal observers. Sensitivity to luminance modulation did not differ significantly from normal at any temporal frequency tested except 0.5 Hz, at which the subjects with nystagmus had slightly higher sensitivity. In conjunction with other recent findings, their essentially normal temporal contrast sensitivity suggests that persons with nystagmus process retinal information continuously, rather than selectively during only only one phase of

Electrophysiological and psychophysical flicker sensitivity in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension.

Temporal sensitivity was assessed in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and ocular hypertension (OHT). Three measures of flicker sensitivity were obtained: psychophysical modulation thresholds, visual-evoked potentials (VEPs), and focal electroretinograms (FERGs). We found elevated psychophysical thresholds at higher temporal frequencies (30-50 Hz) in patients with POAG, relative to thresholds for age-matched controls. The OHT patients had elevated psychophysical thresholds only at 50 Hz. On the other hand, VEP amplitudes in POAG patients were reduced at all temporal frequencies,

Chromatic, spatial, and temporal losses of sensitivity in multiple sclerosis.

Chromatic, spatial, and temporal losses of sensitivity were measured in 15 eyes of 10 patients with recovered optic neuritis. Chromatic sensitivities (for both red-green and blue-yellow) were measured using color-mixture thresholds; the chromatic sensitivity loss was classified as "selective" if it was significantly greater than the achromatic loss. Spatial and temporal sensitivities were measured with contrast sensitivity functions and flicker modulation sensitivity, respectively; these losses were classified as selective if the losses at high (spatial or temporal) frequencies were significan
