Omics analyses decoding mechanisms underlying the self-flocculating phenotype of yeast cells and stress tolerance for robust production.

A unique self-flocculating yeast strain SPSC01 was developed through protoplast fusion for fuel ethanol production with high product titers. In this study, we conducted comparative multi-omics analyses on SPSC01 to elucidate mechanisms underlying its self-flocculating phenotype and associated stress tolerance, the most desirable merit for robust production in industry. Leveraging two cutting-edge third-generation sequencing technologies, we achieved a gapless high-quality and chromosome-level assembly for the genomes of SPSC01 and its parental strains. Through comprehensive genome analyses, we

N, S Dual-Doped Carbon Derived from Dye Sludge by Using Polymeric Flocculant as Soft Template.

Dye sludge is a major by-product and it will bring critical environmental problems in the textile industry. In this study, dicyandiamide formaldehyde resin (DFR) is used as an effective flocculating agent for the removal of anionic dyes from textile dye wastewater. Employing dye-contaminated sewage sludges as precursors, N, S dual-doped carbon materials are successfully synthesized by using DFR as a soft template. The specific surface area, morphology, and pore structure of the resulting annealed products can be easily controlled by changing the DFR content of the dye sludge. The oxygen reduct

Integrating coagulation-flocculation and UV-C or H2O2/UV-C as alternatives for pre- or complete treatment of biodiesel effluents.

The feasibility of biodiesel effluent treatment combining coagulation-flocculation with a photolytic process was evaluated, being the photolytic process involving the irradiation of the effluent by UV-C, or by UV-C irradiation with simultaneous addition of H2O2 (H2O2/UV-C). The coagulation-flocculation was performed at the natural pH of the effluent (pH 2.9) using different Fe3+ salts (chloride, nitrate and sulfate) at different concentrations (0.25, 0.50 and 1.0 mmol L-1) of the counterions. The best results were achieved using 0.50 mmol L-1 Fe(NO3)3. Following, the degradation of the organic

Flocculation synergistic with nano zero-valent iron augmented attapulgite @ chitosan as Fenton-like catalyst for the treatment of landfill leachate.

In this study, nano-zero-valent iron (NZVI) was added to attapulgite/chitosan and used as a catalyst in the heterogeneous Fenton process to degrade stabilized landfill leachate. Landfill leachate has serious environmental impacts due to the complexity and diversity of its pollutants. A magnetic catalyst (NZVI@PATP/CS) was prepared by a liquid-phase reduction method. The NZVI@PATP/CS were characterized by XRD, FTIR and SEM. The pH of leachate and the dosage of catalyst and H2O2 were changed to determine the best-operating conditions for the effective removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and

Mimosa-inspired dual-responsive flocculant with controllable hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity reconstruction for the purification of triclosan containing emulsified wastewater.

The coexistence of triclosan (TCS) in emulsified oil wastewater exacerbates potential environmental and health risks, whereas few studies have reported the simultaneous removal of oil and TCS. Wastewater pH and temperature fluctuations narrowed the operational windows of conventional flocculants. Inspired by the dynamic conformational reconfiguration of mimosa pudica, a novel thermo- and pH-responsive flocculant (CGNS) was synthesized by introducing sodium methacrylate (SMA) and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) in this study. Jar tests demonstrated that the lower critical solution temperat

Model established by response surface methodology for Cu(II) removal from water with mercaptoacetyl aminomethy polyacrylamide as flocculant.

The flocculation process has been validated as a highly effective technique for the removal of heavy metal ions. A novel flocculant, mercaptoacetyl aminomethy polyacrylamide (MAAPAM), was synthesized from acrylamide, sodium formate, ammonium persulfate, formaldehyde, dimethylamine, and thioglycolic acid as the raw materials. Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to optimize the flocculation conditions for Cu(II) removal using MAAPAM. The optimal conditions for achieving the maximum Cu(II) removal efficiency of 99.21 % were a Cu(II) concentration of 7.5 mg/L, a pH of 6.1, and a MAAPAM

Periphyton and Flocculent Materials Are Important Ecological Compartments Supporting Abundant and Diverse Mercury Methylator Assemblages in the Florida Everglades.

Mercury (Hg) methylation in the Florida Everglades is of great environmental concern because of its adverse effects on human and wildlife health through biomagnification in aquatic food webs. Periphyton and flocculant materials (floc) overlaying peat soil are important ecological compartments producing methylmercury (MeHg) in this ecosystem. These compartments retain higher concentrations of MeHg than did soil at study sites across nutrient and/or sulfate gradient(s). To better understand what controls Hg methylation in these compartments, the present study explored the structures and abundanc

STUDIES IN THE SEROLOGY OF SYPHILIS : III. EXPLANATION OF THE FORTIFYING EFFECT OF CHOLESTERIN UPON THE ANTIGEN AS USED IN THE WASSERMANN AND FLOCCULATION TESTS.

When cholesterinized antigen is dropped into an excess of water, the rapid flocculation of cholesterin crystals is prevented by the fact that, as tiny aggregates form, they adsorb a protective surface of hydrophilic lecithin (i.e., antigen) which endows the particles with its own stable surface properties and thus prevents further aggregation. The colloidally dispersed antigen-cholesterin particles have approximately the same isoelectric point (pH 1.9), critical potential (1 to 5 millivolts) and coagulation value (0.75 M NaCl) as pure antigen particles of the same concentration, while the corr

Biochar, zeolite, and ferric chloride effectively separate phosphorus and nitrogen (plus potassium) in swine manure: A coagulation-flocculation-sedimentation approach.

We studied the effectiveness of different coagulants (0.15 M FeCl3, 0.40 M HCl, and 2.5% H3PO4) in separating key plant macronutrients (N as NH4+, P, and K) from swine manure into solid and liquid fractions for their sustainable use in agriculture. This study assesses how these coagulants impact nutrient recovery and separated fraction's characteristics, aiming to improve the solid-liquid separation process using biochar and zeolite. The FeCl3 treatment, biochar, and zeolite showed optimum nutrient recovery among the tested coagulants for solid (93% of total P) and liquid (90% and 50% of total

Deciphering the flocculation mechanism of cellulose - modified polymers for antibiotic and co-pollutant removal: Structural determinants from structure-activity relationships.

The widespread use of antibiotics has led to their persistent accumulation in aquatic environments. Although flocculation is cost-effective, traditional flocculants exhibit limited removal efficiency for antibiotics. To address this problem, a novel cellulose-based flocculant (CE-DMC) was synthesized from paper pulp rejects. The methacryloxyethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (DMC) monomer was successfully grafted onto the cellulose backbone with a grafting rate of 64 %, endowing CE-DMC with high positive charge density (+71.1 mV at pH 6) and a branched architecture. Flocculation experiments demo

Copolymers functionalized with quaternary ammonium compounds under template chain exhibit simultaneously efficient bactericidal and flocculation properties: Characterization, performance and mechanism.

In this work, novel multifunctional cationic template copolymers with flocculation and sterilization capabilities were synthesized using a low-pressure ultraviolet (LP-UV) template polymerization method for the removal of kaolin and Escherichia coli (E. coli) from water. The influence of template agents on the structural performance of the copolymers was evaluated through characterization, which showed that template copolymer TPADM possesses a higher cationic charge density and a more complex rough surface, contributing to better flocculation performance than that of the non-template copolymer

A novel chitosan and polyferric sulfate composite coagulant for biogas slurry pretreatment by simultaneous flocculation and floatation: Performance and underlying mechanisms.

Biogas slurry from anaerobic digestion is rich in nutrients but has not been fully utilized due to a high content of suspended solids (SS) causing clogging during agricultural irrigation. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of a novel chitosan and polyferric sulfate (CTS-PFS) composite coagulant for simultaneous flocculation and floatation to enhance SS removal while preserving nutrients in biogas slurry. Orthogonal method was used for experimental design to determine the optimal synthesis and operational conditions of CTS-PFS. Results show that CTS-PFS outperformed individual CTS and

Characterisation of landfill leachate by EEM-PARAFAC-SOM during physical-chemical treatment by coagulation-flocculation, activated carbon adsorption and ion exchange.

The combination of fluorescence excitation-emission matrices (EEM), parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) and self-organizing maps (SOM) is shown to be a powerful tool in the follow up of dissolved organic matter (DOM) removal from landfill leachate by physical-chemical treatment consisting of coagulation, granular activated carbon (GAC) and ion exchange. Using PARAFAC, three DOM components were identified: C1 representing humic/fulvic-like compounds; C2 representing tryptophan-like compounds; and C3 representing humic-like compounds. Impacts of coagulation-flocculation treatment on the size distribution and bioavailability of trace metals (Cu, Pb, Ni, Zn) in municipal wastewater.

This study investigated the impact of coagulation-flocculation treatment on metal form and bioavailability in municipal wastewater. Real humus effluent samples were separated into particulate, colloidal and truly dissolved fractions before and after treatment with either ferric chloride (FeCl3) or the biopolymer Floculan. Results revealed that both reagents effectively (≥48%) eliminated Cu, Pb and Zn from the particulate fraction and removed Cu and Zn from the colloidal fraction in conjunction with colloidal organic carbon (COC). Although organics in the truly dissolved fraction were resistant

Influence of Jatropha curcas seeds as a natural flocculant on reducing Tin (IV) tetrachloride in the treatment of concentrated stabilised landfill leachate.

Stabilised leachate usually contains lower concentration of organic compounds than younger leachate; it has low biodegradability and generally unsuitable for biological treatment. The effectiveness of tetravalent metal salts in a coagulation-flocculation (C-F) process is still inclusive. Application of natural coagulants as an alternative to the chemical could reduce chemical usage, is less costly, and environmentally friendly. Hence, the objective of the current research is to examine the possibility of reducing the amount of Tin (IV) chloride (SnCl4) as a primary coagulant by adding Jatropha

Competitive adsorption of toxic metals on bentonite and use of chitosan as flocculent coagulant to speed up the settling of generated clay suspensions.

Evaluation of modified Algerian clay as mineral adsorbent was done for its adsorbing capacity on copper (Cu) and Zinc (Zn) cations. The results obtained show a rapid kinetic adsorption for both metals (less than 2 h) following the pseudo-second order model with high elimination rates of 67.2 and 61.8% for Cu and Zn respectively. The adsorption isotherms analyzed with Langmuir model revealed a correlation with the experimental values. While the use of obtained chitosan at room temperature, as flocculent coagulant, accelerates the decantation of the colloidal particles in suspension generated af

Lipid Extraction from Wet Polymer-Flocculated Chlorella sorokiniana Using Liquefied Dimethyl Ether without Centrifugation and Drying Pretreatment.

The energy intensive nature of harvesting microalgae by centrifugation and drying results in a low energy profit ratio for biofuel production from wet microalgae. To address this, microalgal cultures can be flocculated by polymers to reduce energy consumption and avoid centrifugation. Additionally, lipids can be directly extracted from wet microalgae harvested by centrifugation using liquefied dimethyl ether (DME) to reduce energy consumption. In this study, we investigated the lipid extraction from the green alga, Chlorella sorokiniana (C. sorokiniana), flocculated with amphoteric and cationi
