Over the past decade, Bangladesh has experienced substantial demographic change alongside increasing climate-related disruption. This study examines the links between extreme climatic events and fertility among married Bangladeshi women of childbearing age who already have children, focusing on how cyclones and floods relate to fertility behaviour in cyclone- and flood-prone villages. A mixed-methods design was used, drawing on 544 household surveys, 74 in-depth interviews with women, 10 focus group discussions with men, and 8 key informant interviews. Comparing two ecologically distinct sites

The number of dams is predicted to increase worldwide under the current global change scenario. A major environmental problem associated with dams is the release of large quantities of fine sediment downstream. Therefore, future studies in river conservation will largely be focused on the management of sediments trapped by reservoirs. The aim of this study was to investigate the downstream ecological impacts of sediment flushing from a dam and the effectiveness of artificial flash floods as a recovery strategy. Artificial flash floods have often been employed to remove large amounts of sedimen

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to explore how social capital or the impact of life and previous disaster experience facilitated resilience in older adults who experienced the 2011 and 2013 floods in Brisbane, Australia.
METHODS: Data were drawn from in-depth interviews of 10 older adults from Brisbane who were evacuated in both the 2011 and 2013 floods. A combined qualitative approach drawing from the methods of constructivist grounded theory and narrative inquiry was applied and the data were analyzed by using (inductive) line-by-line and axial coding.
RESULTS: The narratives of t

Pakistan suffered large-scale flooding in summer 2010 that caused damage amounting to approximately USD 43 billion, claimed the lives of at least 1,700 people, and negatively affected some 20 million others. Observers have debated the degree to which social capital plays a role in recovery after a catastrophe of this magnitude. Using new survey data on 450 residents impacted by the disaster, this study found that, controlling for various confounding factors, the social capital levels of victims serve as robust correlates of life recovery. Other important variables connected with recovery inclu

Understanding the potential links between floods and bacillary dysentery in China is important to develop appropriate intervention programs after floods. This study aimed to explore the distributed lag effects of floods on bacillary dysentery and to identify the vulnerable groups in Huaihua, China. Weekly number of bacillary dysentery cases from 2005-2011 were obtained during flood season. Flood data and meteorological data over the same period were obtained from the China Meteorological Data Sharing Service System. To examine the distributed lag effects, a generalized linear mixed model combi

OBJECTIVE: The 2010-2011 Queensland floods resulted in the most deaths from a single flood event in Australia since 1916. This article analyses the information on these deaths for comparison with those from previous floods in modern Australia in an attempt to identify factors that have contributed to those deaths. Haddon's Matrix, originally designed for prevention of road trauma, offers a framework for understanding the interplay between contributing factors and helps facilitate a clearer understanding of the varied strategies required to ensure people's safety for particular flood types.

A statewide sample of 1735 Iowa residents, approximately half of whom were victims of the 1993 Midwest Floods, participated in interviews 1 year prior to, and 30 to 90 days after, the disaster. Employing a rigorous methodology including both control-group comparisons and predisaster assessments, we performed a systematic evaluation of the disaster's impact. Overall, the disaster led to true but small rises in depressive symptoms and diagnoses 60-90 days postflood. The disaster-psychopathology effect was not moderated by predisaster depressive symptoms or diagnostically defined depression; rath

Floods are frequent climate-related disasters in Bangladesh, threatening physical safety, livelihoods, and mental health. Women are particularly vulnerable due to gendered roles, economic dependence, and caregiving duties. However, research on women's mental health outcomes following recent flash floods is limited. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 504 women aged 18 years and above in Fulgazi and Sonagazi upazilas of Feni District, Bangladesh, following the 2024 flash flood. Participants were recruited purposively from flood-affected communities, and data were collect

Human Dirofilaria infection is increasingly reported in Europe, driven by rising temperatures and the expansion of ecological niches suitable for its mosquito vectors. We report the case of a 20-year-old woman with ocular involvement after volunteering during the clean-up following the October 2024 DANA (Isolated High-Level Depression) floods in Valencia, Spain. The nematode was initially observed in the upper eyelid, later migrating to the subconjunctival space and ultimately forming an infrapalpebral subcutaneous nodule. We highlight the diagnostic challenge posed by the parasite's continuou

INTRODUCTION: This Experience Report explores the mobilisation of mental health professionals and students who responded to the catastrophic floods in Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil, in 2024. Triggered by prolonged rainfall and exacerbated by urbanisation and the influence of El Niño, this event caused unprecedented devastation, with over 615,000 individuals displaced and severe socioeconomic impacts. This paper aims to describe the experiences of mental health professionals and students involved in psychosocial care provided to victims between May and July 2024 in rescue sites and shelters at

This study examines the lived experiences of violence against women belonging to low socioeconomic status (SES) in the context of floods in Assam. It analyzes how women are exposed to varying levels of susceptibility exclusively due to their gender roles and norms. The article presents a qualitative analysis of the data collected through semistructured interviews of 96 participants with the victims of different forms of violence. The analysis shows and discusses the participants' experiences of being a woman, particularly those with a low SES, who faces more vulnerabilities and a significant i

In May 2024, the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul experienced an historic flood that affected millions of people. Hundreds of thousands of people were displaced by the record-breaking flood waters, exposing them to water-borne pathogens, including leptospirosis. With concern for an outbreak, local efforts focused on identifying and treating any potential cases of leptospirosis. Using data from a local database for people presenting with signs and symptoms compatible with leptospirosis, we conducted a retrospective-prospective cohort study to estimate the incidence of confirmed cases. Of 53

Background In 2018 and 2019, there were floods in the coastal regions of Kerala. Many individuals and families were victims on both these occasions; these floods had devastating impact on individual psychological wellbeing, their financial stability, and on overall family wellbeing. Furthermore, many people in vulnerable geographical areas still live in uncertainty and fear. In this context, our study examined whether continuous victimization of natural calamities, like floods in Kerala, leads to the development of learned helplessness and decreased psychological wellbeing among those affecte

Record-breaking and devastating rainfall events have occurred in the past decade. Rain and floods are considered the main risk factors for leptospirosis and several outbreaks have been reported following extreme weather events. In such situations, one possible intervention to prevent leptospirosis cases in high-risk groups is the use of chemoprophylaxis. However, not enough evidence of its effect is available. The objectives of this study were to review the literature on the current practices of chemoprophylaxis for leptospirosis and to explore, using a mathematical model, how various chemopro

An intense cut-off low weather system, more commonly known regionally as a 'black south-easter', caused severe flooding in Port Alfred and the surrounding coastal areas from 17 to 23 October 2012. Unconfirmed reports of up to 700 mm of rainfall for the period were recorded. Damage caused by the flooding was estimated at R500 million. Eight deaths were recorded. The poorly maintained and ageing infrastructure and storm water systems could not withstand the floodwaters, and as a result, damage was worse than it should have been. Many houses, particularly in the surrounding townships and informal
