Enhancement of Fluoride Retention in Human Enamel Using Low-Energy Blue Diode Laser (445 nm): An Ex Vivo Study.

AIM: This ex vivo study aimed to evaluate the effect of low-energy 445 nm diode laser irradiation on permanent fluoride retention in human enamel. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty caries-free extracted permanent human teeth were used to prepare 480 enamel discs (2 × 2 mm). Baseline fluoride content in untreated enamel specimens (control group E) was measured using particle-induced gamma-ray emission (PIGE). All specimens then received a topical application of acidulated phosphate fluoride for 5 min, followed by rinsing with double-distilled water for 1 min. Fluoride quantification was subsequent

International fluoride symposium: effects of fluoride on human health and its mechanisms of action - a meeting report.

Fluoride prevents dental caries in a dose-response manner, leading some countries to adjust fluoride levels in water or table salt, as well as to promote the widespread use of topical fluoride. Recent studies have found associations between prenatal fluoride exposure levels of < 1.5 mg/L in water and urine and adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. Although high fluoride levels have been recognized as neurotoxic in the past, a large body of contemporary evidence derived from retrospective analyses of birth cohort studies suggests fluoride may be neurotoxic to children at lower levels, highlighti

[Dental caries in the elderly. 1. Prevalence and risk factors].

This article reports declining edentulousness and caries risk among elderly in good general health. Recurrent caries in the cementum is the prevalent type of lesion. Caries risk is highest in mandibular molars and lowest in mandibular front teeth. Elevated caries risk in the elderly may be associated with a delay in the oral sugar clearance. The reason may be a decline in salivary glandular function, for which risk factors are: 1. being a female; 2: suffering from hypertension, rheumatoid arthritis, or uncontrolled diabetes; and 3. using neuroleptics, ataraxica, beta-blocking agents and L-dopa

Demineralization and remineralization of dental enamel.

Experimentation in vitro using organic acid buffers as demineralizing media shows that caries-like lesions can be obtained which are very similar in morphology and developmental stages to early lesions formed naturally under oral conditions. The use of these chemical systems and of mechanistic models advanced to explain the unique histological features of incipient caries have yielded a good understanding of the processes involved in caries formation. The study of natural and induced factors influencing the demineralization process has been greatly facilitated by the use of bacteriological sys

Effect of fluoride concentrations on overdenture abutments.

This study evaluated the preventive effect of four concentrations of fluoride. Twenty-five extracted caries-free anterior teeth from patients aged 50-70 were prepared as overdenture abutments. The teeth were sectioned mesiodistally into two halves. The teeth were covered with a protective varnish, leaving a window on the root surface and one on the cut dentin of the occlusal. The root halves were randomly divided into 5 groups of 10 specimens and each group received a different 5-minute topical treatment prior to being placed in the demineralizing solution. The treatments were: Group 1: distil

The antimicrobial effect of fluorides (acidulated phosphate, sodium and stannous) on Actinomyces viscosus.

The effect of three commercially prepared fluoride compounds (acidulated phosphate fluoride 1.23% F-, stannous fluoride 0.4%, and sodium fluoride 0.05%) diluted to various concentrations with brain heart infusion broth, on the growth of five strains of Actinomyces viscosus following 1 and 24 hours' exposure to the fluorides was studied. Results demonstrated that SnF2 was the most effective growth inhibitor of the organisms at 500 ppm F- after 1 hour and at 100 ppm F- after 24 hours' exposure. APF and NaF were not effective within a 1 hour exposure period, but did suppress growth of the organis

Fluorine-18 labeling of small molecules: the use of 18F-labeled aryl fluorides derived from no-carrier-added [18F]fluoride as labeling precursors.

The favourable long-half life, the ease of production and the low energy of the emitted positron make 18F an ideal radionuclide for PET imaging. Radiochemistry of 18F basically relies on two distinctive types of reactions: nucleophilic and electrophilic reactions. All syntheses of 18F-labeled radiotracers are based on either [18F]fluoride ion or [18F]fluorine gas as simple primary labeling precursors which are obtained directly from the cyclotron. They can be applied either directly to the radiosynthesis or they can be transformed into more complex labeling precursors enabling the multi-step b

[Effect of an electric field on the penetration of fluorides into dental enamel, studied in vitro and in vivo].

The aim of the present study is to determine the influence of iontophoresis on the deposition of fluorine in dental enamel. A micromethod of fluorine-deposition and of dental enamel-sampling was perfected in vitro; it was then applied in vivo. Fluorine was layed down by topical and iontophoretical way, under the form of sodium fluoride in neutral solution. In in-vitro and in 2 in-vivo asseys 18F was used as an indicator, while in other ones fluorine was titrated by mean of a specific lanthan-fluoride electrode. Results from both methods agree. It is stated that the fluorine deposition on ename

Antibiotic prophylaxis in dental patients with ventriculo-peritoneal shunts: a pilot study.

Fourteen hydrocephalic children with ventriculo-peritoneal shunts received routine dental prophylaxis and topical fluoride application. No antibiotics were administered to these children for any reason during the three months before treatment or during the twelve months after treatment. None of these children presented with any signs of shunt infection during the twelve-month posttreatment period. In spite of the small sample size, this prospective pilot study suggests that patients with ventriculo-peritoneal shunts are not susceptible to shunt infection following a bacteremia induced by a den

Current strategies for dentist-applied treatment in the management of hypersensitive dentine.

Few of the many dentist-applied treatments for dentine hypersensitivity meet the requirements of an ideal desensitizing agent'. This paper, although not exhaustive, covers methods that may be classified from simplest to most complex. Topical methods are simple, but they are often uncomfortable and the effects usually quite short-lasting, and many fall short of the 'ideal'. Fluorides and oxalates appear to be the best topical methods. Iontophoresis of fluoride represents an intermediate stage of complexity and it meets most of the criteria of an ideal desensitizing agent. Newer restorative mate

Fluoride and Cardiovascular Diseases: Epidemiologic Investigations and Mechanistic Insights.

Fluorine is a trace element that is beneficial to human health. However, long-term and excessive fluoride exposure can damage bone and teeth, as well as the cardiovascular, nervous, and reproductive systems, etc. Since 2001, a growing body of evidences suggests that excessive fluoride exposure is associated with cardiovascular diseases. Although some original studies have focused on this topic, general and narrative reviews are rare. This article summarizes the effects of fluoride on blood pressure/hypertension, vascular sclerosis (mainly atherosclerosis), and myocardial/ cardiac damages based
