AIMS: To search for pharmaceutical additives in illicit alcoholic beverages referred to the laboratory of Legal Medicine Organization in Iran in 2017.
METHODS: Hundred beverages were sampled. Ethanol content was determined by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID) and then a liquid-liquid extraction combined with reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography equipped with a photodiode array detector (PAD) was employed for the qualitative analysis. Medication histories were obtained from 3,192 ambulatory elderly persons participating in a health screening program. A total of 2,009 (63%) women and 1,183 (37%) men were included in the drug use study. The authors discuss the problems of accurately diagnosing narcolepsy when patients manifest the auxiliary symptoms of this disorder, i.e., cataplexy, hypnagogic hallucinations, and sleep paralysis, which conclude that misdiagnosis of narcolepsy can be avoided if clinicians are aware that this illness can simulate a psychiatric disorder and if they give careful attention to the histroy of the patient's illness.

Mazindol, a new anorexiant, was administered at a daily dose of 0.5-4 mg to 10 narcoleptic subjects aged 21-63 years. All the patients suffered from sleep attacks and one or more of the REM-related symptoms. Eight patients received only mazindol, and two patients received mazindol simultaneously with clomipramine or flurazepam. A survey was made of drug prescriptions written for all medical/surgical patients in a general hospital on a single weekday in 1978. Of these 348 patients, 195 were over the age of 60. In this elderly group, 62 (32 percent) were receiving psychoactive drugs. Flurazepam was the drug most commonly prescribed (in 63 percent of the patients).
