The expression of awe: evolutionary origins and cultural elaborations of a basic emotion.

Awe is the emotion people experience when encountering stimuli that are vast and beyond their current knowledge structures. In this article, we take a basic emotion approach to the study of the expression of awe, reviewing studies of awe-related movements of facial muscles, patterns of vocalization and bodily and postural movements. We first present evidence suggesting that awe indeed is a distinct emotional state. Guided by advances in the study of multi-modal emotional expression, we then review studies of how people express awe in a pattern of mouth and gaze activity, specific vocal bursts

Pharmacotherapeutic potential of pomegranate in age-related neurological disorders.

Age-related neurological disorders [AND] include neurodegenerative diseases [NDDs] such as Alzheimer's disease [AD] and Parkinson's disease [PD], which are the most prevalent types of dementia in the elderly. It also includes other illnesses such as migraine and epilepsy. ANDs are multifactorial, but aging is their major risk factor. The most frequent and vital pathological features of AND are oxidative stress, inflammation, and accumulation of misfolded proteins. As AND brain damage is a significant public health burden and its incidence is increasing, much has been done to overcome it. Pomeg

Evaluation of traditional medicinal plant, Cissus setosa Roxb. (Vitaceae) for antiulcer property.

Cissus setosa is an indigenous medicinal herb commonly used for the treatment of gastro ulcers. In the current investigation the aerial methanolic extract of C. setosa was investigated for their antiulcer activity using pylorus ligation and ethanol in experimental rats. The extract was administered at the doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg b.w. orally for 3 days. However, higher dose of the extract subsequently reduced gastric ulcer induced aberrations by pylorus ligation (70.05%) and ethanol (78.16%) as judged by their altered biochemical parameters such as free acidity, total acidity, total carbohyd

General Halleck's itchy elbows.

General Henry Wager Halleck served as general-in-chief and chief of staff of the Federal army from 1862-1865. Unpopular with troops as well as with many members of the Lincoln administration, he was a particular source of irritation to Secretary of Navy Gideon Welles. In his posthumously-published diary of the war years, Welles viciously criticized Halleck for his failings as army commander. Welles also derided Halleck's personality and personal appearance. Welles found the general's habitual elbow-scratching annoying enough to mention it in five separate diary entries. This depiction of Halle

Older patients' experiences and perceptions of having their wounds treated with medical-grade honey.

Ancient remedies in wound care have been used for millennia and are now being rediscovered; in particular, the use of honey. The purpose of this study was to capture and explore the meanings that participants assign to their lived experiences when using medical-grade honey to treat wounds. Six participants were recruited from a Lindsey Leg Club support group. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and the verbatim transcriptions were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Two themes were identified: experiences of using medical-grade honey and perceptions of honey as a nat

Cow's urine poisoning in Nigeria: cardiorespiratory effects of cow's urine in dogs.

"Cow's urine" concoction (CUPR) is a traditional remedy for convulsive seizures in Nigeria. Its administration has been associated with severe poisoning, sometimes with a fatal outcome in Nigerian children. Recently, we showed that several of the components of the concoction are toxic. We have demonstrated in the present study certain cardio-respiratory effects of cow's urine concoction in dogs. On the cardiovascular system, an initial bradycardia followed by tachycardia and a biphasic effect on blood pressue characterized by a fall followed by a rise were demonstrated. Progressive hypotension

Exploring the Promise of Flavonoids to Combat Neuropathic Pain: From Molecular Mechanisms to Therapeutic Implications.

Neuropathic pain (NP) is the result of irregular processing in the central or peripheral nervous system, which is generally caused by neuronal injury. The management of NP represents a great challenge owing to its heterogeneous profile and the significant undesirable side effects of the frequently prescribed psychoactive agents, including benzodiazepines (BDZ). Currently, several established drugs including antidepressants, anticonvulsants, topical lidocaine, and opioids are used to treat NP, but they exert a wide range of adverse effects. To reduce the burden of adverse effects, we need to in

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and changing attitudes toward dysmenorrhea.

Dysmenorrhea, which may be primary or secondary, is the occurrence of painful uterine cramps during menstruation. Until a decade ago, medical and social attitudes toward dysmenorrhea were shrouded with folklore, psychoanalytical profiles, or psychosomatic bases. In secondary dysmenorrhea, there is a visible pelvic lesion to account for the pain, whereas only a biochemical abnormality is responsible for primary dysmenorrhea. Recent advances in the biochemistry of prostaglandins and their role in the pathophysiology of primary dysmenorrhea and intrauterine device (IUD)-induced dysmenorrhea have
