Sex and the endocrine system exert a significant influence on the physiology and pathophysiology of the lacrimal gland. The purpose of this article is to briefly review the nature and magnitude of these interactions between sex, hormones and lacrimal tissue, and to address how they may relate to the pathogenesis of aqueous-deficient dry eye. The sera of 28 patients with acute myeloid leukemia AML--subtypes M1 to M6 were screened for human prolactin (h-PRL). Serum TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), LH (luteinizing hormone), FSH (follicle stimulating hormone), beta-estradiol, free T4 (tetra-iodotyronine) and testosterone were also determined. We report on ovarian dysfunction in a 3-year-old girl with blepharophimosis, ptosis, and epicanthus inversus syndrome (BPES). A gonadotropin releasing hormone test showed hyperresponses of luteinizing hormone (<0.2-->7.2 mIU/ml) and follicle-stimulating hormone (7.1-->44.8 mIU/ml), and a human menopause gonadotropin test yielded no estradiol response (13-->11 pg/ml). The results suggest that primary ovarian failure in type I BPES can take place in early childhood.

A 3-month-old infant presented with hypogonadism, a small penis and bilateral cryptorchidism. He showed an insufficient response of luteotropic hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) to luteotropic hormone releasing hormone (LHRH) and of testosterone to human chorionic gonadotropin. The maternal uncle had hypogonadism and anosmia and also showed an impaired LH and FSH response to LHRH. MRI examination showed hypoplasia of the rhinencephalon in both cases. These findings in the son and brother of the clinically unaffected mother suggest X-linked recessive inheritance.

Twelve patients with clinical features of pseudocyesis were divided into two groups according to the presence or absence of galactorrhea.
