European eating disorders review : the journal of the Eating Disorders Association2014eng
Although the concept of 'food addiction' (FA) has raised growing interest because of evidence for similarities between substance dependence and excessive food intake, there is a lack of studies that explore this construct among the wide spectrum of eating disorders (EDs). Besides providing validation scores of a Spanish version of the Yale FA Scale (YFAS-S), this study examined the prevalence of 'FA' among ED subtypes compared with healthy-eating controls (HCs) and the association between 'FA' scores, eating symptomatology and general psychopathology. A sample of 125 adult women with ED, diagn

Food addiction (FA) has been proposed as a behavioral factor contributing to obesity in adolescents, particularly among those experiencing psychological difficulties. Mindful eating may represent a protective characteristic, but its statistical relationship with psychological difficulties and FA in adolescents with obesity remains unclear. Forty-eight adolescents with obesity (ages 11–18; 54.2% female) were recruited from a pediatric outpatient clinic in Türkiye. FA symptoms were assessed using the Yale Food Addiction Scale for Children (YFAS-C), mindful eating with the Mindful Eating Question

OBJECTIVE: Food addiction (FA) is implicated in obesity, yet the potential moderating role of mindful eating and the underlying neural mechanisms in youth remain unclear.
METHODS: This study integrated a multicenter cross-sectional survey, a longitudinal study with 6- and 12-month follow-ups, and an independent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sample. FA, eating motives, mindful eating, BMI z-score, fat content, and visceral fat level were assessed. Analyses utilized structural equation modeling, latent growth modeling, and voxel-based morphometry.
RESULTS: Among 2071 screened, 1601 youth (5

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Food addiction has been linked to psychopathology and reduced psychological well-being. Here, we investigated whether these associations are mainly driven by food addiction itself or mediated via an increase in BMI.
METHODS: Data stem from a nationwide survey from Denmark (n = 1474 participants). The survey questionnaire included the Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0 (YFAS 2.0) measuring food addiction, questions on height and weight (to compute BMI), and a range of self-reported measures of psychopathology and psychological well-being. The association between food addiction

Addiction is a complex neurobiological disorder characterized by compulsive drug-seeking and use despite harmful consequences. While abstinence-based approaches have long been the cornerstone of addiction treatment, recent years have seen legitimate challenges from harm reduction clinicians, and within the food addiction realm, the eating disorder treatment practitioners. This perspective emphasizes the role of abstinence in food addiction recovery using the Koob model and its concept of hyperkatifeia despite these reservations. However, further research is essential before abstinence can be r

Adolescence is considered an important period of neurodevelopment. It is a time for the emergence of psychosocial vulnerabilities, including symptoms of depression, eating disorders, and increased engagement in unhealthy eating behaviours. Food addiction (FA) in adolescents is an area of study where there has been substantial growth. However, to date, limited studies have considered what demographic characteristics of adolescents may predispose them to endorse greater symptoms of FA. Studies have found a variety of factors that often cluster with and may influence an adolescent's eating behavi

Compulsive forms of eating displayed by some obese individuals share similarities with compulsive drug-taking behaviour, a hallmark feature of substance use disorder. This raises the possibility that drug addiction treatments may show utility in the treatment of compulsive overeating. N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) is a cysteine pro-drug which has experienced some success in clinical trials, reducing cocaine, marijuana and cigarette use, as well as compulsive behaviours such as gambling and trichotillomania. We assessed the impact of NAC on addiction-like behaviour towards highly palatable food in a r

This review is part of a special issue dedicated to Opioid addiction, and examines the influential role of opioid peptides, opioid receptors and opiate drugs in mediating food intake and body weight control in rodents. This review postulates that opioid mediation of food intake was an example of "positive addictive" properties that provide motivational drives to maintain opioid-seeking behavior and that are not subject to the "negative addictive" properties associated with tolerance, dependence and withdrawal. Data demonstrate that opiate and opioid peptide agonists stimulate food intake throu

BACKGROUND: Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS) was established to identify individuals exhibiting signs of addiction towards certain types of food. This study aimed to develop a Turkish version of the Yale Food Addiction Scale and test its psychometric properties.
METHODS: The backward translation techniques were used to develop Turkish versions of the YFAS, and its reproducibility was assessed. Turkish version of the YFAS was administered to a total of 1033 participants (439 men and 594 women), aged 19-65 years. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were used to examine

OBJECTIVE: Food Addiction (FA) and other well-known risk behavior as substance misuse tend to co-occur and may share similar risk and protective factors. The aim of this study was to assess the association between the diagnosis/severity of FA and psychosocial domains typically related to risk behavior syndrome in a large, nationally representative community sample of Generation Z underage Italian students.
METHOD: The sample consisted of 8,755 students (3,623 from middle schools, 5,132 from high schools). A short version of the Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0 was administered to evaluate FA. Ri

PURPOSE: Childhood trauma is associated with increased risk of obesity during adulthood, which may be associated with the development of food addiction. This study examined whether food addiction mediated the relationship between childhood trauma and obesity in young adults.
METHODS: A sample of 512 young adults, aged 18 to 30 years, living with overweight and obesity (Body Mass Index ≥ 25 kg/m2), from the United Kingdom participated in the study. Participants completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), the Yale Food Addiction Scale, and provided their current height and weight to com

The rapid increase in the prevalence of obesity is a priority for investigators from across numerous disciplines, including biology, nutritional science, and public health and policy. In this paper, we systematically examine the premise that common dietary obesity is an addictive disorder, based on the criteria for addiction described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) of Mental Disorders of the American Psychiatric Association, version IV, and consider the consequences of such a reclassification of obesity for public policy. Specifically, we discuss evidence from both human and an

BACKGROUND: Food addiction (FA) has been linked to pathological eating, obesity, and a variety of detrimental mental health outcomes, yet the role of trait anger remains largely unexplored. This study examined whether trait anger and anger expression and regulation dimensions are associated with FA independently of the Big Five personality traits.
METHODS: We used data collected between 2011 and 2014 from 1,138 adults aged 20-79 years participating in the LIFE-Adult Study, a population-based German cohort study. Sequential Poisson regression analyses were conducted to examine associations of

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: There is limited information on the prevalence and characteristics of Food Addiction (FA) in representative samples of the general population, and particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of FA and its associations with mental and physical health comorbidities, and with quality of life in Brazil.
METHODS: A population-based household survey of 2297 individuals aged 18 to 60 years with 3-staged sampling was conducted in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 2019 to 2020. FA was assessed with the modified Yale Food Addi

BACKGROUND: Men are more likely than women to have subthreshold overeating disorders. Lifestyle plays a role as a determinant, while chronotype is an emerging factor. Chronotype explains the natural preferences of wakefulness and activity throughout the day: evening chronotypes (E-Types), those most productive in the evening, have been linked with unhealthy dietary patterns and a higher propensity to substance addiction than morning types (M-Types).
METHODS: We carried out a cross-sectional study on 750 overweight or obese adults (70% females, 48 ± 10 years, BMI 31.7 ± 5.8 kg/m2). The Binge-E

Background: Food addiction (FA) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are each associated with obesity and adverse psychological outcomes. The goal of this study was to generate symptom profiles based on varying levels of FA and PTSD symptoms. We hypothesised four profiles: PTSD + FA; PTSD; FA; healthy.Method: In a general Polish population (N = 2245), scores on PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5), Lifetime Events Checklist (LEC), and Yale FA Scale (YFAS) were used as indicators in the latent profile analysis. Gender and Negative Urgency (SUPPS-P) were used as predictors of profile membership.

Introduction: Childhood emotional maltreatment, which includes emotional abuse and neglect, has been identified as a significant risk factor for the development of disordered eating behaviors related to overeating and reduced dietary control. At the same time, the literature suggests that childhood emotional maltreatment appears to be linked to deficits in reflective functioning which, in turn, may increase vulnerability to dysregulated, impulsive, and addictive behaviors. However, to date, the role of a key factor, such as food addiction (FA), within this model has not yet been investigated.

Background: Food addiction (FA) is an emerging construct that mirrors the behavioral and neurobiological characteristics of substance use disorders. Despite growing interest, its association with specific psychiatric disorders among bariatric patients remains understudied. Objective: Our aim was to examine the prevalence and strength of associations between FA and seven major psychiatric disorders in individuals who underwent bariatric surgery. Methods: In a sample of 100 post-bariatric patients referred for psychiatric evaluation, FA was assessed using the modified Yale Food Addiction Scale 2

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Obesity has become a major public health burden worldwide due to the significant social and economic impacts of its associated comorbidities. Despite substantial advancements in obesity research, its prevalence continues to rise, and weight loss remains a persistent challenge despite numerous weight management programs. Food addiction has emerged as a novel factor contributing to obesity, garnering considerable attention. Some individuals consume specific foods in quantities exceeding their physiological needs, indicating a lack of control over their eating behavior. This
