Experiences participating in federal nutrition assistance programs during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic: an investigation in Vermont.

BACKGROUND: Federal nutrition assistance programs serve as safety nets for many American households, and participation has been linked to increased food security and, in some instances, improved diet quality and mental health outcomes. The COVID-19 pandemic brought new and increased economic, social, and psychological challenges, necessitating inquiry into how nutrition assistance programs are functioning and associated with public health outcomes. METHODS: Using data from a representative statewide survey administered in Vermont (n = 600) between July and September 2020, we examined particip

Rental assistance, housing insecurity, & well-being: Spillover effects of emergency rental assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic threatened to exacerbate housing insecurity among renters in the United States, with spillover effects on mental health and non-housing material hardships such as food insecurity. As one response to the potential crisis, the federal government implemented the $47 billion Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERA) to stabilize rental housing through aid to vulnerable renter households. This study evaluates impacts of ERA on two non-housing outcomes, food insufficiency and psychological distress, using data from the Household Pulse Survey fielded by the U.S. Census Bureau. W

BACKGROUND: Unlike other disorders, much of the economic burden of mental disorders is not due to direct costs of care, but due to indirect costs such as loss of employment and the receipt of public assistance. AIMS: The goal of this paper is to estimate how having a mental disorder impacts employment outcomes, receipt of public assistance and food assistance. METHODS: We estimate the impact of having a mental disorder on employment and the receipt of public assistance using instrumental variable (IV) methods and a longitudinal dataset: National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Co

Impacts of Nutrition Policy on Food Insecurity and Individual Health in the United States: A Narrative Review.

Food insecurity remains a persistent and inequitable public health issue in the United States, disproportionately affecting low-income households, communities of color, and rural populations. Despite an abundant national food supply, systemic barriers to accessing nutritious food continue to undermine health equity. As food insecurity rates climb in the postpandemic period and the 2025 Farm Bill was recently reauthorized, this policy moment presents a critical opportunity to reassess the United States' food system. This narrative review synthesizes recent literature at the intersection of food

Universal food security program and nutritional intake: Evidence from the hunger prone KBK districts in Odisha.

This article provides evidence on the role of consumer food subsidies in improving nutritional intake and diet quality by evaluating the expansion of the government food assistance program coverage in the hunger prone state of Odisha in India. In 8 districts of Odisha, popularly known as the Kalahandi-Balangir-Koraput (KBK) region which is notable for extreme poverty and starvation deaths, the government did away with the targeted food assistance program in 2008 and made the scheme universal. Using a Difference-in-Difference methodology over two repeated cross sectional household surveys, this

Effects of infant health on family food insecurity: evidence from two U.S. birth cohort studies.

Extremely little is known about the effects of health on food insecurity despite strong associations between the two and a theoretical basis for this avenue of inquiry. This study uses data from two national birth cohort studies in the U.S., the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Birth Cohort (N = ∼9400) from 2001 to 2003 and the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (N = 2458) from 1998 to 2003, to estimate the effects of poor infant health on child and household food insecurity and explore the potential buffering effects of public programs that provide food, healthcare, and cash assista

Pragmatic trial evaluating a randomly allocated Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program outreach and enrolment assistance programme in Michigan: study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Low-income adults with disabilities experience disproportionately high rates of food insecurity and preventable healthcare utilisation. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) can reduce food insecurity and improve health, but there are accessibility gaps in the SNAP enrolment process. Existing outreach and enrolment assistance programmes have been shown to boost SNAP enrolment, but their health effects are understudied. This study estimates the effects of a SNAP outreach and enrolment assistance programme on health outcomes among low-income adults with disabilities.

Food Insecurity Among Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Individuals in the Southeast United States: A Qualitative Study.

Purpose: Transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) people experience high rates of poverty, joblessness, and homelessness, which drive risk for food insecurity. TGNC people also face discrimination due to transphobia and cissexism, which may contribute to these drivers. Minimal empirical evidence describes experiences with food insecurity among TGNC people. This project investigated food insecurity among TGNC people and how these experiences relate to their physical and mental health. Methods: Semistructured telephone interviews were conducted with 20 TGNC people residing in the Southeast Un
