Digestive and liver disease : official journal of the Italian Society of Gastroenterology and the Italian Association for the Study of the Liver2006eng
BACKGROUND: An abnormal intestinal permeability could contribute to establish an altered sensitivity to food-allergen.
AIM: To evaluate the intestinal permeability in subjects with adverse reactions to food on allergen-free diet.
SUBJECTS: Twenty-one patients with food allergy and 20 with food hypersensitivity on allergen-free diet were enrolled and divided in four groups according to the seriousness of their referred clinical symptoms when they were on a free diet.
METHODS: Intestinal permeability was evaluated by Lactulose/Mannitol ratio urinary detection determined by anion-exchange chro

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between food hypersensitivity and atopic dermatitis (AD) in young children.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In a case-control design, 28 patients < 3 years old, with AD and 28 age-matched healthy children were included in the study. A detailed medical history of allergies and timing of weaning was obtained. Children underwent skin tests (prick and patch) to evaluate food hypersensitivity. The status of DA and food allergies in the study participants was investigated 4 years later.
RESULTS: There were more children with positive skin

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common presenting complaint by children and their caretakers to their primary care providers. On testing, children with AD frequently exhibit positive food-specific IgE levels in the absence of immediate allergic reactions. Misinterpretation of these false positive tests can lead to unnecessary food avoidance, which can have tremendous psychosocial, economic and nutritional consequences and, in some cases, facilitate the development of an immediate hypersensitivity to the food. We present a child with persistent AD who underwent broad testing that led to unnecessary

In spite of popular beliefs, the relationship between eczema and food allergy still puzzles researchers and clinicians, which in part is due to the variety of mechanisms involved in various types of allergy. One has to realize the differences between hypersensitivity reactions to food proteins (allergens capable of initiating immediate hypersensitivity or immune complex reactions) and low-molecular weight compounds (haptens that may initiate cytotoxic reactions or delayed-type allergy). Hardly doubted is the role of IgE specific to food proteins in anaphylactic reactions and allergic urticaria

Food additives are natural or synthetic substances added to foods at any stage of production to enhance flavor, texture, appearance, preservation, safety, or other qualities. Common categories include preservatives and antimicrobials, colorings and dyes, flavorings, antioxidants, stabilizers, and emulsifiers. Natural substances rather than synthetics are more likely to cause hypersensitivity. Although rare, food additive hypersensitivity should be suspected in patients with immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated reactions to multiple, unrelated foods, especially if the foods are prepared outside of t

Adverse reactions to food occur in about 1-2% of the population, but are reported more frequently by patients. Most reactions to food are not caused by allergy. IgE-mediated food reactions are well known and of major clinical significance owing to their potentially dangerous, even life-threatening character. Adverse reactions to food can also be caused by immunological mechanisms other than IgE-mediated reactions such as, enzyme deficiencies, active pharmacological substances in food and psychological mechanisms. Double-blind provocation is the only way to diagnose a positive reaction to a foo

The first descriptions of crossed allergenicity were concerned with the associations between Pollen/Food allergy: birch pollen/apple, grass pollen/wheat-tomato etc. Since then other crossed reactions have been described, involving pneumoallergens, tropallergens, drugs, hymenoptera venoms. Crossed reactions are the combination of an antigen with a recognition molecule other than that which stimulated its synthesis, because of epitope(s) that are common or sufficiently close between two antigens. The techniques of immunoprints and RAST inhibition give confirmation of crossed reactions that are s

This narrative review seeks to distinguish the clinical patterns of pre-existing allergic conditions from other confounding non-allergic clinical entities, and to identify the potential related risks and facilitate their perioperative management. Follow-up investigation should be performed after a perioperative immediate hypersensitivity to establish a diagnosis and provide advice for subsequent anaesthetics, the main risk factor for perioperative immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated anaphylaxis being a previous uninvestigated perioperative immediate hypersensitivity reaction. The concept of cross-

BACKGROUND: Adverse reactions to food play an important role in the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis (AD). In infancy and childhood, food allergies are observed in up to 30%, whereas nonallergic hypersensitivity reactions (pseudoallergic reactions) towards food additives have been reported to occur between 2 and 7%. By contrast, sensitizations towards food allergens are rarely of clinical relevance in adults and little data is available on nonallergic hypersensitivity reactions. To date the role of pseudoallergic reactions as an aggravating factor in AD of adult patients remains controversial

Food allergy may present with a variety of respiratory tract symptoms that generally involve immunoglobulin E antibody-mediated responses. Exposure is typically through ingestion, but in some cases, inhalation of airborne food particles may trigger these reactions. Upper and lower respiratory tract reactions are often a significant component of multisystem, anaphylactic reactions. However, chronic or isolated asthma or rhinitis induced by food is unusual. It is important to recognize that food allergy in early childhood is a marker indicating an increased risk to develop respiratory allergy. T

Ingested food represents the greatest foreign antigenic load that confronts the human immune system. In most individuals tolerance develops to food antigens that are continually gaining access to the body. When tolerance fails to develop, the immune system may react with a hypersensitivity reaction. Allergies to food affect up to 8% of children less than 3 years of age and 1% to 2% of the general population. Symptoms include the gastrointestinal, cutaneous, and respiratory symptoms, as well as systemic anaphylaxis with shock. Clinical investigations in the past have characterized the food hype

Excipients are substances in pharmaceuticals other than the active ingredients. Some excipients are foods or substances derived from foods, raising the possibility that these substances would pose a hazard to patients with food allergy. This review describes which food-derived substances are used as pharmaceutical excipients in which medications and reviews published data regarding the safety of the administration of these medications to recipients with food allergy. Such reactions are rare, usually because the amount of food protein is not present in a large enough quantity to elicit a reacti

ABSTRACT: Food allergic reactions frequently occur in ethnic restaurants. However, effective training materials specific to food allergies have not been readily available to employees. The objectives of the study were to investigate employee self-efficacy, perceived susceptibility, and commitment on the basis of individual and operational factors and what variables, among self-efficacy, perceived susceptibility, and commitment, are associated with the employee's intention to reduce risky behavior when handling food allergies in ethnic restaurants. A total of 256 employees who had or are curren

: Carmine is a widely used "natural" food additive that has been reported to provoke both an immediate hypersensitivity and a delayed systemic response with cutaneous expression. Systemic contact dermatitis describes the hypersensitivity reaction following systemic re-exposure of the inciting allergen in previously sensitized individuals. In individuals with recalcitrant dermatitis and a positive carmine intolerance history and/or patch test, it is important to consider a trial topical and dietary elimination of carmine-associated products and foods.

Allergic and pseudoallergic reactions caused by foods respectively food-additives present cutaneous (urticaria, erythrodermia), gastrointestinal (nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea) and respiratory symptoms (allergic bronchial asthma). The anaphylactic shock is the most severe manifestation. Exact diagnosis is based on anamnesis, skin-tests, laboratory investigations, dietetic test procedures and oral provocation. In allergic and pseudoallergic reactions the adequate therapy is the avoidance of the causative agent (diet).

Food intolerances are prevalent and often confused with food allergies. This article reviews the complex landscape of adverse reactions to food, distinguishing between immune-mediated responses (food allergies) and nonimmune reactions (food intolerances). It also explores specific food intolerances such as lactose intolerance, nonceliac gluten sensitivity, fructose intolerance, and salicylate sensitivity.

Adverse reactions to foods may sometimes cause symptoms from the respiratory tract, including bronchial obstruction and rhinitis. The true prevalence is not known. In adults, it has been estimated to be about 1% of asthmatic patients or less. This would correspond to a prevalence of about 2-4 in 10,000 of the general population. The prevalence in children is higher, as IgE mediated food allergy is more common in this age group than in adults. The most common foods causing immunologically mediated reactions include milk, egg, fish, crustaceans, nuts, wheat, soy, peanut, peas and other legumes.
