The Journal of adolescent health : official publication of the Society for Adolescent Medicine2026eng
PURPOSE: Adolescent mental health challenges in the United States have reached critical levels. This is a sensitive developmental period during which exposure to household-level hardships, such as food insecurity and housing instability, and adverse neighborhood environments may heighten vulnerability to mental, emotional, developmental, and behavioral health (MEDBH). This study examined the pathways through which household-level and neighborhood factors influence adolescent MEDBH.
METHODS: Using cross-sectional data from the 2022 National Survey of Children's Health, logistic regression mode

PURPOSE: Childhood cancer survivors (CCS) have 7-times higher risk of cardiovascular mortality than the general population, highlighting the importance of addressing modifiable cardiovascular risk factors. In this study, we aimed to quantify the prevalence of food and nutrition insecurity-known cardiovascular risk factors-among a single-center cohort of early CCS, and explore these factors as drivers of adverse CCS dietary and cardiovascular outcomes.
METHODS: Children aged < 18 years and < 1 year off-therapy were enrolled at a quaternary pediatric cancer center. Parents/guardians of particip

Cancer epidemiology, biomarkers & prevention : a publication of the American Association for Cancer Research, cosponsored by the American Society of Preventive Oncology2026eng
BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDOH) influence cancer prevention and outcomes. Among SDOH, economic stability-including food insecurity, income, employment, and housing stability-has a major impact on health. However, data linking food security status with cancer screening completion remain limited. We examined whether lower food security status was associated with lower completion of colorectal, breast, cervical, and prostate cancer screening.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of the 2018-2023 National Health Interview Survey. Analyses were limited to cancer-specific

CONTEXT: Disasters can triple the risk of food insecurity for vulnerable households, with effects lasting years beyond the initial shock. In North Carolina, where hurricanes are frequent, local organizations face growing pressure to support communities with limited resources and fragmented information systems.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify data and information gaps faced by organizations addressing disaster food insecurity and the tools they use to record, access, and share data and information.
DESIGN: A qualitative, exploratory study combining semi-structured interviews and works

OBJECTIVES: Food insecurity (FI), limited or uncertain access to adequate food, impacts every state, county, and community in the United States. The goals of this quality improvement (QI) initiative were to first achieve greater than 90% compliance with FI screening for patients seen at pediatric GI clinics within 1 year and second increase the proportion of families identified as FI connected with resources to 50% at follow-up visits.
METHODS: Using plan-do-study-act cycles, interventions were implemented to (1) educate, (2) create a screening process, (3) optimize communication with EMR uti

The health effects of social conditions such as income, education, and employment have been demonstrated to be persistent and wide-reaching. In this study, we examine the effect of social determinants of health, those conditions in which people live, among individuals with serious mental illnesses (SMI) who are actively engaged with mental health services. Using a sample of 203 clients at a community mental health clinic, this study (1) explores the prevalence of three social determinants of health: food insecurity, homelessness, and neighborhood disorder, and (2) assesses their associations w

INTRODUCTION: The emergency department (ED) is a safety net, caring for families who lack adequate access to food and other basic needs. The COVID-19 pandemic caused a dramatic rise in food insecurity (FI) nationally; however, little is known about the prevalence of FI among families seen in pediatric EDs (PED). In this study we aimed to determine the prevalence of FI, as well as awareness and utilization of supplemental food services, among families seen in an urban PED during the COVID-19 pandemic using an electronic screening survey.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional survey of families s

Food insecurity (FI) impacts people with HIV (PWH) and those who use substances (i.e. drugs and alcohol). We evaluated the longitudinal association between FI and HIV transmission risks (unprotected sexual contacts and shared needles/syringes). Among 351 PWH who use substances in Russia, 51.6% reported FI and 37.0% past month injection drug use. The mean number of unprotected sexual contacts in the past 90 days was 13.4 (SD 30.1); 9.7% reported sharing needles/syringes in the past month. We did not find a significant association between mild/moderate FI (adjusted IRR = 0.87, 95% CI 0.47, 1.61)

BACKGROUND: Childhood food insecurity increased considerably during the COVID-19 pandemic and is associated with compromised health. Health care systems are increasingly prioritizing food insecurity interventions to improve health, but it is unclear how health systems collaborate with other sectors that are addressing food insecurity. In this study, we aimed to evaluate existing collaborations and explore opportunities for further cross-sector engagement.
METHODS: From December 2020 to March 2021, we conducted semi-structured interviews (N = 34) with informants involved in increasing child fo

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to childhood adversity, including abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction, is associated with negative long-term health and economic outcomes. Little is known about how adversity exposure in parents' early lives may be related to later food insecurity for parents and their children. This study investigated the association between female caregivers' adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and household and child food insecurity, taking into account depressive symptoms.
METHODS: This study used cross-sectional data from 1,255 female caregivers of children aged <4 years sur

BACKGROUND: Examination of maternal experiences of intimate partner violence (IPV) and depression as risk factors for food insecurity can provide a more nuanced understanding of the role that the family environment and women's health plays in the lives of families with young children that experience food insecurity. We investigated the longitudinal association between mothers' experiences of IPV and household food insecurity, and whether maternal depression mediated the relationship.
METHODS: IPV, depression, and food insecurity were assessed among 1,690 socioeconomically disadvantaged mother

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity is an ongoing threat in rural sub-Saharan Africa and is complicated by cultural practices, the rise of chronic conditions such as HIV and land use availability. In order to develop a successful food security intervention program, it is important to be informed of the realities and needs of the target population. The purpose of this study was to pilot a qualitative method to understand food insecurity based on the lived experience of women of the Maasai population in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area of Tanzania.
METHODS: Short semi-structured qualitative interviews

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Food insecurity arising from insufficient access to food necessary for an active and healthy lifestyle is a prevalent yet underrecognized predictor of health that can increase the risk of chronic disorders. The impact of food insecurity on mortality rates from digestive tract diseases within the United States was analyzed.
METHODS: County-level age-standardized mortality rates for digestive tract diseases, encompassing both gastrointestinal tract and liver diseases, were obtained for 2015-2020 and linked to corresponding county-level measures of food insecurity, access to

INTRODUCTION: Food insecurity is increasing in the United Kingdom and is a growing public health concern. In Westminster, a highly diverse London borough, rates continue to rise in the most deprived areas, such as the Church Street ward, despite increasing food support and local policies.
METHODS: This study used a community-informed systems thinking approach to understand the local dynamics. 26 stakeholders from 6 local services participated in group model-building (GMB) workshops and interviews to provide insight into how services and policies interact with the structural drivers of food in
