Spiders, ubiquitous and abundant predators in terrestrial ecosystems, often are the subjects of an unjust negative perception. However, these remarkable creatures stand as unsung heroes within our ecosystems, contributing a multitude of ecosystem services critical to human well-being. Here, we describe the diverse spectrum of ecosystem services offered by spiders and their potential to inspire or directly provide nature-based solutions. Provisioning services include the versatile uses of silk-like and other materials, inspiration for biomimetic technology, medicines derived from venom, hemolym

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: Whilst food allergy seems to have increased significantly in many developed countries in the past few decades, quality data on the burden of food allergy in many developing countries is scanty. Until recently, South Africa had a dearth of robustly designed food allergy studies. This article summarizes some of the recent research and observations regarding food allergy from the South African setting.
RECENT FINDINGS: South Africa has recently seen two important food allergy prevalence studies in selected and unselected populations. Both show allergy rates in keeping with

Regarding preparing and serving foods, food handlers have an influential role in the spreading of foodborne infections. Due to the great potential to cause foodborne infections, intestinal parasites (IPs) are considered a significant public health problem in today's societies. In Iran, despite several regional reports, national data on IPs prevalence in food handlers are lacking. The aim of the present study, therefore, is to estimate the pooled prevalence of IPs infections and associated pooled odds ratio of educational level among food handlers in Iran. Millions of children across the United States rely on school meals as a primary source of daily nutrition. Access to healthy meals improves diet quality, reduces hunger, and supports better attendance and academic performance. Recent federal actions, however, have threatened the reach and quality of these programs. Funding reductions have limited schools' ability to purchase fresh, locally sourced foods and have made universal free meals harder to provide. These changes disproportionately affect students from low-income and historically marginalized communities, increasing food insecurity, sti

INTRODUCTION: The emergency department (ED) is a safety net, caring for families who lack adequate access to food and other basic needs. The COVID-19 pandemic caused a dramatic rise in food insecurity (FI) nationally; however, little is known about the prevalence of FI among families seen in pediatric EDs (PED). In this study we aimed to determine the prevalence of FI, as well as awareness and utilization of supplemental food services, among families seen in an urban PED during the COVID-19 pandemic using an electronic screening survey.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional survey of families s

Introduction Food allergy is an immunological reaction that occurs in response to particular proteins in food. As food allergy can affect multiple body organs, symptoms usually include pruritus, urticaria, rash, cough, dyspnea, and wheezing. Atopic diseases are common in patients with food allergies, and multiple significant associations have been made between them. As such, the presence of food allergy in atopic patients can be used as an indicator of disease severity. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of atopic diseases in food allergy patients. Methodology This was a retr

Charitable meal services are an essential source of nourishment for many people experiencing homelessness (PEH), yet little research has examined how everyday organizational practices shape experiences of power, dignity, and participation within these settings. Guided by the work of Paulo Freire, this critical ethnography explored how power is enacted and experienced within charitable meal services for PEH in two mid-sized Canadian cities. Data were collected through participant observation and semi-structured interviews conducted between September 2023 and April 2024. Participants described c

Incarcerated people are more likely to become ill from foodborne disease outbreaks compared with the general public. Correctional settings face unique challenges when preventing, controlling, and mitigating foodborne outbreaks. To describe knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of correctional staff regarding food safety, food safety training, and barriers to food safety in their facilities, we conducted an anonymous survey of correctional staff through professional organizations and correctional employers throughout the United States. Participants' food safety KAP was compared by individua

BACKGROUND: Under- and over nutrition as well as nutrition risk factors such as communicable and non-communicable diseases are a common and major cause of morbidity and mortality in correctional facilities. Consequently, medical nutrition therapy (MNT), a spectrum of nutrition services aimed at optimizing individual well-being, is being recognized as integral to the health of people who experience incarceration. However, there is a paucity of research that explores the delivery of MNT in correctional facilities.
METHODS: A scoping review combined with secondary analysis of qualitative data (f

Objective: Despite alarming rates of students' food insecurity in the US (41%), estimates may not be fully capturing experiences in university settings. Understanding students' food insecurity is a knowledge gap flagged amidst outstanding progress on food security measurement in household settings. This study investigated the domains shaping the experiences around food with implications for food insecurity among students. Participants and Methods: Of 178 students aged 18 years or older who reported worrying about food running out, eating insufficient amounts of food, and lacking balanced meals

Globally, school meals have formed a social safety net for improving children's nutrition, health, and educational attainment. In Aotearoa New Zealand, government funded lunches for children attending schools in low-income neighbourhoods were introduced in 2020, amidst rising poverty levels and consequent household food insecurity. The aspirations encapsulated within the scheme's indigenous Māori name, 'Ka Ora, Ka Ako' ('to be well, healthy and safe; to be ready to learn') have lost focus since reforms to the lunches in 2024 prioritised cost savings, resulting in widely publicised quality issu

The COVID-19 pandemic forced adult day services (ADS) to close and abruptly end in-person services to clients. To understand the effect of the pandemic on ADS, a 20-item survey was used to examine services provided, staffing, finances, and plans to reopen. Data came from 22 sites participating in the Adult Day Service Plus a national randomized controlled trial. Of the 22 ADS sites responding to the survey, most (86.4%, n = 19) closed due to COVID-19 with nearly half closing due to a state mandate (52.6%, n = 10). Most sites reported the need to furlough or terminate staff (63.6%, n = 14). Ser
