Recovery from injury for athletes is a multifaceted process that requires physiologic healing of the injury and psychological readiness. Although the individual injury will dictate the terms of healing and different injuries require different recoveries, healing or near-healing of the orthopaedic injury is the first step along the path of return to play. Return to play encompasses a range of milestones that often begin with a limited return to the practice field and end with return to full competition in an unlimited manner. Optimizing the psychology of recovery can allow for a more linear rec

BACKGROUND: In response to the all-time high of female sports participation, there has been increasing scientific discourse and media interest in women's sporting injuries in recent years. In gender comparable sports the rate of foot and ankle injury for women is higher than for men. There are intrinsic and extrinsic factors which may explain this difference.
METHODS: A systematic literature search was performed according to the PRISMA guidelines of PubMed, Ovid EMBASE and OVID MEDLINE. Relevant key terms were used to narrow the scope of the search prior to screening. Case reports, review art

PURPOSE: Common peroneal nerve palsy is quite disabling and every effort should be made to prevent its injury during the treatment.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the prospectively collected data of 7 cases of tibial plateau fractures in association with proximal fibula fracture from January 2019 to September 2019 who presented to emergency room of our hospital.
RESULTS: In addition to fibular neck fracture, the first case had type 6 tibial plateau displaced fracture and the second case had displaced acetabular fracture with instability of knee with tibial tuberosity avulsion. common p

Soccer is one of the most popular sports in the world. It has undergone many changes in recent years, mainly because of increased physical demands, and this has led to an increased injury risk. Direct contact accounts for half of all injuries in both indoor and outdoor soccer and ankle sprains are the most common foot and ankle injury. There is a spectrum of foot and ankle injuries and their treatment should be individualized in these high-demand patients. An injury prevention program is also important and should the players, the trainer, responsible physician, and physical therapists.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D deficiency has been identified as one of the most common causes of fragility fractures and poor fracture healing. Although rates of vitamin D deficiency have been delineated in various orthopaedic populations, little is known about the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in patients with foot and ankle disorders. The goal of this study was to identify the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in patients with a low energy fracture of the foot or ankle.
METHODS: Over a 6-month period, a serum 25-OH vitamin D level was obtained from consecutive patients with a low energy ankle

Studies regarding ankle and foot overuse injuries are quite diverse in research methodology, data reporting, and outcomes. The aims of this systematic review were to analyze the methodology of published studies regarding ankle and foot overuse injuries in different sports disciplines and to summarize epidemiological data of ankle and foot overuse injuries. Four electronic databases, PubMed (MEDLINE), EMBASE, CINAHL, and SPORTDiscus(®) were systematically searched up to June 2011. A total of 89 articles on 23 sports disciplines were included in this review. Soccer, running, and gymnastics were

OBJECTIVES: Children can suffer serious foot injuries while riding or driving an all-terrain vehicle (ATV). The purpose of this study was to describe this injury pattern.
METHODS: A search of the trauma registry of the Arkansas Children's Hospital for the years 1998 through 2006 was conducted to find cases of children admitted for treatment of foot injuries related to ATV use. The cases were deidentified and summarized. The study was reviewed and deemed to be exempt by the local institutional review board.
RESULTS: Ten cases of foot injury were identified. The median age was 3 years. Eight h

Nerve injuries of the foot and ankle can result in pain, numbness, or loss of motor function. A thorough history and physical examination are required to diagnose the injury correctly and guide treatment. Treatment may involve conservative measures, primary nerve repair or nerve grafting, or resection and relocation of painful neuroma. Potential complications include the development of chronic pain syndromes.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term outcome of multiple injured patients with foot injuries. While severity and frequency of multiple injuries could be decreased in the last years, it was not possible to decrease the severity of injuries of the foot and ankle region. These injuries are often not detected and their severity is underestimated in primarily diagnostics what might lead to complaints in the longterm course.
METHODS: The multiple trauma database of the Department of Traumatology of the University of Vienna includes 386 patients from September 1992 to Ap

Foot and ankle pain is common in ballet dancers. Although clinical examination often points to the underlying cause, imaging is often necessary to confirm the diagnosis and thus ensure appropriate future management. Factors predisposing to the increased incidence of injuries in this population include the classical position in which ballet dancers stand, which is on the tips of the toes in the en pointe position or on the balls of the feet in the demi-pointe position. Furthermore, the repetitious nature of ballet and the long hours spent rehearsing cause over-use injuries. The causes of foot a

The ankle is one of the most frequently injured joints in the course of sports activities. MR imaging has become the modality of choice in the evaluation of most of these lesions, especially in competitive athletes. The purpose of this article is: (1) To illustrate the MR imaging features of a great number of sports-related injuries of the ankle, correlating it with lesional mechanisms and clinical findings, and (2) To review the role of MR imaging in clinical management and surgical planning of these injuries, especially in competitive athletes. In order to a better understanding of these les

Moving car-tire injury of the foot is a condition that appears to be a new clinical entity in Istanbul, in which the non-weight-bearing surface of the foot is prone to be injured. Between 1992 and 1995, eight moving car-tire injuries of the foot were managed. Patient age averaged 10.25 years (range: 7 to 21 years). All patients presented with soft-tissue loss combined with extensor tendon and bone lesions. In 6 patients, immediate flap coverage after initial debridement and, in 2 patients, delayed coverage after multiple debridements, were performed. All the flaps survived. Although in all pat

Lower limb injuries caused by under-foot impacts often appear in sport landing, automobile collision, and antivehicular landmine blasts. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a foot-ankle-leg model of the human active lower limb (HALL) model, and used it to investigate lower leg injury responses in different under-foot loading environments to provide a theoretical basis for the design of physical dummies adapted to multiple loading conditions. The model was first validated in allowable rotation loading conditions, like dorsiflexion, inversion/eversion, and external rotation. Then, its sens

Complex foot injuries occur infrequently, but are life-changing events. They often present with other injuries as the result of a high-energy trauma. After initial stabilization, early assessment should be regarding salvagability. All treatment strategies are intensive. The initial treatment includes prevention of progression ischemia/necrosis, prevention of infection, and considering salvage or amputation. Definitive treatment for salvage includes anatomic reconstruction with stable internal fixation and early soft tissue coverage followed by aggressive rehabilitation. Prognosis after complex

Kohler's disease is rare cause of foot pain and limping in the pediatric population. The exact etiology of Kohler's disease is unknown. It usually presents as sudden and unexplained foot pain and limping. We report a case of a 5-year-old male who presented to the Pediatric Emergency Department with foot pain and inability to bear weight for two days after overactivity and acute foot injury. The patient was eventually diagnosed with Kohler's disease (avascular necrosis of the navicular bone). Although Kohler's disease is not very common, it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of

A surgeon faces important issues when returning a patient to the workplace, including workers' compensation issues and the need for physician guidance. These patients deserve appropriate diagnosis and treatment protocols, and the other members of the workers compensation treatment team can help maximize the effects of careful guidance by a physician. The speediest possible return to the workplace is usually best for all concerned, the injured worker, the employer and the physician. The treatment team within the workers' compensation system assists in the facilitation and coordination of the me
